Description Used the Kodak M1033 on 640 x 480 HQ mode to record this sketching fun piece. It's raw and uncut so you see how I go about doing my pencil work.

At times I'll have music playing in the background or the TV going but today was a quite day

Also, used a Pental Techniclick 0.7 HB mechanical pencil on Card Stock paper.

No audio just good old fashion sketchin

StevenSanchez In reply to 0xxes [2008-12-17 10:43:10 +0000 UTC]

Card stock paper, and for this vid it was a Techniclick Pentel 0.7 Mechanical pencil. Normally I use a .5 but it doesn't really matter, I use whatever's around me near my desk

Amazing drawing as always. I had a question though. I was wondering if you where keeping your hand off the paper the whole time? If you were, I like to know what you would recommend that could help me do that. I been drawing for years, and I have the bad habit of keeping my hand to the paper.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StevenSanchez In reply to Kento517 [2008-12-17 11:04:35 +0000 UTC]

No way! I hold my paper, you need to keep the paper stable as you draw if not it'll slip and slide all over the place.

...where.. do you put the camera..? heh, it seems like it's right up in the action but I would imagine it would be getting in the way.. just curious

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StevenSanchez In reply to strykr-ntt [2008-12-17 10:47:06 +0000 UTC]

I have one of those cheap little tripods I got a few years back. A company called DIGITAL produces them. I slap my Kodak on there and keep it just to the left side of me and I work around it.

I think I got it at Walmart in the camera section.

It's not that uncomfortable for me. After shooting so many vids you get use to it

I admire your focus, think I'd get distracted keep it up with the awesomeness videoooos super duper fun to watch

RandyGreen In reply to ??? [2008-12-17 02:36:01 +0000 UTC]

This is really cool! So important for people to see how you sculpt out the features first and not just start at an "eye" and go form there. Also, that you can have some under-drawing line show and it's OK. Clean 'em up later.

StevenSanchez In reply to RandyGreen [2008-12-17 10:49:10 +0000 UTC]

That's right my friend! I would love to shoot some vid of you line-sculpting at Mega-Con if you'll let me Artists love seeing this process and I would love to absorb your Techniques... I-Um, Mean, Watch you draw

riotfaerie In reply to ??? [2008-12-17 02:33:09 +0000 UTC]

Cool! I have a question though;

Do you use different types of lead for sketching? Such as H for rough and HB for bolder lines? Or did you just use pressure?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StevenSanchez In reply to riotfaerie [2008-12-17 10:51:00 +0000 UTC]

I'm an HB guy myself, Not too dark not too light, since I use pressure to control my pencil the HB allows me that comfort zone to play with lights and dark lines on the page. Good question

Not many artists know about pressure on the pencil which is a topic I'll be writing about in my book later on.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

riotfaerie In reply to StevenSanchez [2008-12-18 00:50:10 +0000 UTC]

You seem to have complete control in this. I guess, some people use different pencils to sketch things out but I guess that depends on people's comfort and techniques. And if you're wondering, I use pressure too but not as clean as yours.

So I guess I'm off practicing again. Thank you, Mr. Sanchez.

Thanks for posting this up, it's really interesting to watch. I feel a lot better knowing that artists such as yourself use mechanical pencils. I've been taught for years now that I'm "wrong" for using a mechanical pencil, I should be using pencils of different hardnesses and such for any type of work. Needless to say, i quit art school a year or two ago.

StevenSanchez In reply to KrisLyssara [2008-12-17 10:53:56 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I hear that a lot and I hate it when these so called "teachers of art" bring crap like that up. It's so un-true and if you can walk, you sure as hell can DRAW, pretty much with anything. It's all about your comfort zone. That's it!

KrisLyssara In reply to StevenSanchez [2008-12-17 19:50:49 +0000 UTC]

I will grant them this much: When doing heavy shading, a #2 lead isn't the best choice... it gets too shiny. That is all I will grant them... well, that, and the idea that everyone has their own style. It's that lesson that kept me drawing.

(it posted to the wrong thing the first time)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StevenSanchez In reply to KrisLyssara [2008-12-17 20:30:51 +0000 UTC]

The lead gets shiny due to the amount of pressure, lighten up and it'll be fine
