Description A long overdue update of the second Zoid I ever designed, the Blue Sovereign is a huge transport Zoid capable of underwater, surface, air and (gasp!) interplanetary travel. Although a transporter, the Sovereign is well defended. The most notable are the verging-on-excessive three-barrelled cannons situated on the top deck and the broadsides along the 'seam' of the Zoid.

Aerial Zoids are launched off the dual runways at the front, and larger birds can take-off and land from the hangar/pad thing in front of the dorsal fin. The dorsal tower is a two-deck command centre and bridge. Land/sea zoids can be deployed from the mouth and another ramp extends out the back. The huge main engine cluster provides thrust and when required can punt the whale Zoid into space. The Zoid is capable of vertical take off and landing - the pectoral fins swivel down, as do the six separate engine pods to the sides of the main engine cluster.

The Blue Sovereign also has a whole host of support Zoids, more on those to come! I'll also be doing some close ups and maybe even some battle scenes when I'm totally sure I'm happy with the design. Modelled and rendered in the NX CAD package. This project was originally just meant as an update of an earlier Zoid (the Blue Emperor) but it quickly became its own thing.

All it needs is a giant main cannon on the nose like the whale king

Oh my GOD this thing is just... just... EPIC! I love that it can travel in space, and I love the design to bits! You can just TELL it's massive from this picture (probably due to the other features being small on it) but man, those mains! Just LOOK at those engines! Daaayuuum. I want to go for a ride in this thing with a military command xD It would be such an awesome experience. This picture just inspires all sorts of adventures!

Ohhhhhh man, I loved the Blue Emperor you made but this is even more amazing. NICE!

I could just imagine flying around in one and stopping next to a "Great Whale King"

"Heya fellas, how's that old clunker treating ya?"

Thanks! I do like the Whale Kings, but they are a bit chunky!

Agreed.

Methinks they outta try trimming down ol Big Willy if they ever do a redesign. Personally I've always been interested on a slimmer variant based on the Narwhal, haven't given it much thought yet though.

Yeah, I was thinking about that too - maybe retrofitting some kind of massive spear/cannon thingy to the front of the Blue Sovereign.

otherwise, PWNSOME rendering stompy!

Stompy1 In reply to Muroa660 [2010-01-14 14:26:10 +0000 UTC]

Not entirely sure yet, but roughly:

Length: 800m

Armaments:
4 x triple heavy cannons
18 x dual medium beam cannons (which also work underwater)
2 x dual light beam cannons (which also work underwater)
8 x dual anti-aircraft flak cannons
8 x dual turreted torpedo launchers (built onto the flak cannons)
4 x squadron of 12 'barnacles' (more on them to come)

it's like 'lease' but more awesome..

I guess I shouldn't have put it after the word 'zoids' making it look like I meant blox or something...

Ooh, are those ambient occlusion passes I'm seeing on this render? Seeing a lot of nice detail.

Excellent work as always.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Stompy1 In reply to derangedhyena [2009-12-01 16:26:05 +0000 UTC]

You know, I'm not entirely sure. It does have that look but I never explicitly turned anything like that on. I'm rendering in a CAD package with IBL, maybe it does that by default?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

derangedhyena In reply to Stompy1 [2009-12-03 10:01:22 +0000 UTC]

I've no idea! I just know I started using ambient occlusion passes in Maya to great effect -- and this looks very similar to that. I know I've toyed with IBL but if I remember correctly it's really fickle in Maya... if the scale's off, getting things like it, Final Gathering, and Caustics to play nice are nightmares.

I don't imagine that's an issue in your CAD software. Everything's probably built to a real scale, yes?

Regardless, I hope to see more from you. Do you hang around anywhere more regularly? Did ZRV bottom out?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Stompy1 In reply to derangedhyena [2009-12-03 15:24:27 +0000 UTC]

Normally I model everything to kit scale, just in case I get the chance to get it made! I really wanted to get the curves right with this one, so it ended up the same scale as one of my better doodles. This kilometre long whale is actually 9.5mm long!

There's not really any forum I visit much anymore. ZRV has bottomed out big time. I can't believe I even thought it wouldn't! I'm enjoying playing around with new (to me) rendering techniques though, I expect I'll be posting more up!
