SHORT STORY by AthenaCykes

“Wait up, Nibs!” Margaret called as she ran after the spunky toki across the ice, Slightly and Squishy in her wake. Voulk and Sakae were both trailing behind her a little, but Sakae had a smile on her face, glad to see all the little tokis and Margaret having some fun. She’d tried, just a little, to strike up some conversation with Voulk, but he hadn’t seemed very interested in talking about anyone but himself, so she let him be, giving him some space in her anxieties. Slightly and Squishy had no such manners- they ran and leapt right next to each other, practically tripping over each other’s paws with how tightly packed they were as they tried to catch up with the escaping Nibs. Nibs, on the other hand, had not a care in the world as he raced across the frozen tundra, his paws pounding against the lair of ice above the water. Margaret had said they were just going out for a little adventure, see how this new ice fishing spot she’d found actually would be for fishing, but once Nibs had heard “ice fishing” he was hooked. He loved fishing, it was fun to splash around in the water and the fish were fun to chase, so he thought it would be a good time. So he raced across the ice with no regard for how sturdy it was or anything like that, trying to find a hole he could slip into to catch some fish and impress everyone, even the stuck up Voulk, with his fishing skills. This was all that was running through his mind as he bolted away from Slightly and Squishy, both of whom were rather enjoying this game of tag on the tundra, Margaret, who was quickly getting left behind by tokota and even toki legs, and Volk and Sakae, who’s heart’s just weren’t in it like the toki’s were. However, when they too passed Margaret, Margaret blew her whistle, signalling for everyone to come back. Sakae, of course, immediately perked up at the sound of it and began trotting back towards Margaret, who she was oh so fond of, and Voulk came too, albeit with a dramatic, cocky head turn, as if to say “I’m coming because I want to, you know, not because you told me to” Which was very much like him. Slightly had a pout clear on his face as he turned away from the handsome, orange toki, and began to trot back towards the left behind handler, and Squishy followed Slightly. She’s so terribly good natured, that it took a lot more than this to bother her, and she still had the smile from the thrill of chase all over her face. As she returned back to Margaret, she didn’t even look behind her to see that in all of his excitement, Nibs had either forgotten what the whistle meant, or not heard it entirely, and was quickly becoming smaller and smaller in the distance. Margaret was watching Slightly head back when she saw that Nibs... didn’t appear to be turning around. In fact, he looked like he was getting farther away? That little idiot... Margaret could only shake her head. One of the reasons she’d stopped them was because her years of experience taking tokotas, especially Dires, out ice fishing, had taught her that it could be damn dangerous to get out too far on a frozen lake, especially when it was as warm out as it was. She didn’t know how well Nibs could swim, but there were probably leopard seals out here, and he’s just the right size to make a good snack for one. Looking out over the ice, she was about ready to just let him come back for himself when she heard something bad, in the distance. Loud, dramatic, cracks. She could see the ice shimmering in the distance as she watched the little toki, and then all of a sudden, she wasn’t watching him anymore. The ice was shattering all over, and he’d clearly fallen in. He’d ventured too far into the middle of the lake- oh god, what were they going to do? Margaret was worried that Voulk would be too heavy to venture out onto the thin ice, and not only would Sakae probably be too, but she didn’t seem like the type that could easily traverse over the cracking, sliding ice, not from Margaret’s experience of her, at least. However, before she could even try to figure out how she was going to get over there, Slightly and Squishy were off like shots. As Slightly ran across the ice, jumping from Platform to platform of the broken, crystal like shards, Squishy Swam in the water with the skill of a seal, pushing each and every make shift raft back towards where it had originally gone, so that Slightly would have things to step upon. As she pulled herself back up onto the ice from the water to run up to the next platform she needed to move as Slightly ran with the determination and skill of a cheetah, stepping on precarious balanced pieces of ice, leaping over gaps that normally would have made him tremble. But right now, he had a mission. He and Squishy were going to save their toki brethren, and make sure Nibs got back alright. When they finally made it to where the toki had fallen, they could see his orange fur floating listlessly in the water- he must have hit his head on a piece of ice as he fell in, he wasn’t the type of toki to go down without a fight. As Sakae and Voulk watched with baited breath, Slightly used his paws to push down the float of ice he was standing on, and Squishy swam underwater with skill and ease to push him back upwards. Once she, exhausted, Managed to push the rather heavy toki onto the surface, Slightly pushed off from the ice floe behind him, using the momentum to get him up onto it. As the three tokis sat there, one fainted and two panting heavily, Margaret slowly began to make her way over the ice floes, before she’d just been watching, amazed at just how impressive these two tokis were in the face of all this danger and trouble. As she slowly made her way across the floats of Ice, Sakae and Voulk continued to watch, guilty that their rather larger size and weight than the tokis and the handler prevented them from being able to help much, as Margaret carefully and slowly made her way across the ice. When she got there, she was terrified to see that not only had that bump to the head knocked Nibs out, but he was also bleeding. Immediately removing her protective coat, she ripped off a sleeve (good bye, a month’s pay) and tied it around the toki’s head in a makeshift bandage. He was far too heavy to carry back herself, so she signalled for Sakae to take the long way around, swimming over to them. There was no way Margaret and just these two, brave tokis could bring him back. When Sakae arrived, Margaret gently put the poor, hurting little toki onto her back. They’d have to get him to a vet immediatly, and righ now it was time to begin that long walk back.
