Description
Here's the harness-tutorial for my Realistic Wing design~1/21/2016:NOTE on Gloves: Instead of making gloves, feel free to buy a pair/find & re-purpose them for your wings, I've found ones with a velcro strap at the wrist to be particularly useful, though the slightly-stretchy gardening gloves work too.
3/22/10: Have you seen my video showing wing-movement yet? Here's another.
10/17/13: Still having issues with the harness? Here's a close up VIDEO!
4/20/14: Trouble with the D-ring wire-wrapping? Here's a photo-progression that may help you start~
6/28/17: I can't believe I forgot to post this... Alternate Harness Design as used by one of my tutorial followers, don't think they have a dA account to link sadly...

Thank you so much for responding! (Sorry for the late comment, I don't use dA very much!) I've tried out the elastic today and it works like a charm! :33 Thanks so much!

I would love if I could get a commission on these when or if you would do one, I'm just wondering how they would attach to a full fursuit.. hmm

Sunnybrook1 In reply to hyenadon [2013-09-13 17:03:08 +0000 UTC]
Ah they'd be pretty easy to attach, just make sleeves long enough to overlap the gap between the arms & the wings (like the neck fur hides the body/head separation), put the harness on first, full suit second, then clip the wings on inside the sleeves (helper optional here but SO USEFUL). The wings arm cover could even BE the sleeves, like with my Raven Prince Mytho costume (points to gallery), you'll just then need something the ribbon/stringing can anchor itself to near your waist on both sides~
Make sense?

Hey, so I was thinking of trying to make a simpler, cheaper harness, and came up with a little design. I was just wondering if you could have a look and see if you think it might work? Youd be much better at spotting problems than I would Hopefully it makes sense

Thanks

Saw the pic - mine looks a lot like this (and the part that goes behind my neck can easily be put in front on my chest) and my biggest problem is that the arm rings don't want to stay up high, instead slipping further & further towards the elbows. But try it! Maybe it will stay up with light enough feathers/wings, and honestly the way I make these the harness is definitely replaceable, so experiment - let me know how it goes~

question...again. :$ i am seriously planning on making these for Halloween, but i don't want to spend a lot of money. I've already reduced and "replaced" everything i think is possible, but I'm still "dweling on the harness. i know i won't make it like this, and i will probably use some type of clothing to replace it, as you suggested. thnx...now i would like to know, what kind of clothing do you suggest? jean jacket, sweater, long sleeve cotton shirt, longsleeve polyester...just want your opinion. thanks.

Something comfortable but not too stretchy, so jean jacket? Or old backpack straps...

hey.
actually I made this wings for a costume what I wear on the next fashion show at my school.
On this part I have a question about step 6. The copper wire you did wrap around the d-ring; where did it place on the bolt? The last position befor the butterfly nut? Oh, and have you a pictuare from the back adjustment with placed feather on the strechy part of the wing? I have 9 feathers for this part, I didn't know it is enough for it.
(sorry for my creepy english :/)
have a nice day!

Sunnybrook1 In reply to halogenlampe [2013-04-08 04:26:55 +0000 UTC]
Part 4: step #2 has a GREAT photo of where the D-ring w/copper goes on the bolt, but the text-answer is outside the pivot point before the wing-nut (sometimes a washer goes between the D-ring & the wing-nut).
And as to the placement of the secondary feathers, just place one at either end of the elastic (flush against the D-ring & buckle) and space the rest as evenly as possible between them, as shown here [link]
Hope this helps - would LOVE to see pictures of what you came up with!

thx a lot
at this time I have just 4 feathers on the elastic part. It looks good, but I think it isn't enough. :/
Allready I have placed the tiny feathers on the wing outsides. Yesderday evaning I cut out the innerside and will glu it today. I hope I can finished it until next week x_x
sure! I will ubload a image as soon as I finished the costum (and the weather is good enough to take a shoot outside.

Yeeeeeah, THIS question and "how many yards of fabric does it take?", I'd like to know this too! Sorry it is taking so long to answer, but it IS on my list, since it will determine commission pricing if I get that up and running after the tutorial is finished...

If it helps I've spent about $40 on materials alone and that's not including the feather or arm cover fabric

You have really quite cleverly duplicated a substitute for the bones, muscles, and skin that control actual feathers. I can see how much thought went into this. Thank you for sharing.

Now I know this might just be plain stupid but I'm one to find the lazy way out. For the harness, if you take a sportsbra, then cut the front part off, your left with the straps that go over your shoulders and around the sides of your ribs. Cut some of the cloth off the straps that go around the ribs so there's none that go around your sides, just goes across your back, sew on a U of a bra hook to each end facing sideways/horizontally P. Sew the J/hook parts of bras to the end of each shoulder-straps. Loop the shoulder-straps over and around your shoulders so they reach the sides of the backstrap/the one that once reached around the ribs, (Haha ok looks a lot less confusing in my head!) and hook them together. And I know this would mean the elastic that goes from your hand to what should be your shoulder now would reach the center of your back so i'd have to make the elastic a little longer(which is why i'm posting this before trying because not sure how much this would effect the wings). And since buckles would be a little tough to fit on the back of this harness if using bra hooks instead would be another solution? Well there's my lazy excuse of a harness, just tell me whether or not that would even work, thanksss
woo paragraph O.o

Sunnybrook1 In reply to Killerpjs [2013-01-24 08:26:06 +0000 UTC]
Wooo, paragraph indeed! Picture or sketch (or even better, try it & take a photo) may illustrate your idea better, and by all means try it! Mine is not the only (nor the best) way to keep the wings at just the right spot on the arms, still looking at improving the design.

Yup, I've used batting gloves & normal heat-protective gloves just fine, though try to get a pair w/velcro wrist strap so they're easier to put on yet STAY on.

Look near the ribbon/spool section of JoAnns, maybe Michaels - or Ben Franklins... Depends on your local stores, otherwise available online.

Ah yes, this part... Not the optimal solution, but works for the most part. If you have any questions, ask~ And don't hesitate to do it your own way, whatever works...well, works!

I'm going to take advantage of my friends metal shop for when I make my wings :3
If you had the ability to have a full range of metal work (aka to have anything made out of metal) what would you suggest for this project?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Sunnybrook1 In reply to Kurkio [2011-10-10 20:22:48 +0000 UTC]
Honestly your guess is as good as mine, though I would try a few different kinds of metal (testing the weight/strength/flexibility ratio) before investing a lot of time & resources into it.

This is great design work. I am impressed by how well it seems to hold up without glitches and yet achieve something that has a realistic quality to it. I am a fan and humbled that you not only had the idea did it but then have spent such care in presenting the information and diagrams for others to do it too. Thanks again for sharing this.

Sunnybrook1 In reply to Airlesse [2011-04-25 04:59:18 +0000 UTC]
Ah, these will work for non-moving types too. AND you can use lighter (weaker) materials, since they won't need to stand up to the stress of movement!
