Here's my test wing w/cover feather patterns (currently poster-board, to be replaced with fabric
) and a spare piece of faux fur to hide where my arm would be. Not sure if I like the results - the fur is off-white, so maybe that's what's bugging me. Any thoughts on a different material that will cover my arm but still give the fuzzy/smooth wing-top impression? I do not relish the thought of cutting out dozens of tiny fabric feathers & sewing them to a sleeve.
Maybe shorter-hair fur w/painted on details?

Amazing job so far. As for the cover issue, I'm not an expert, but what about getting a longer pile fur and shaping it with scissors to look like a few layers of feathers? I saw another deviant on here do the same to make 'scales' on the fur of a stuffed animal, and the result might be worth the work.

I have seen a few examples of this from other costumes and don't like how it clashes with my layered feathers, short of shaving it down really short and styling it with something somewhat permanent I don't know how to keep it bird-feather-smooth & not all fluffed & furry-like (good in most situations, bad in this one)...

My God! These are fantastic! if you ever go to taking on commissions, sign me up! I would like to fund you to make me a set of wings; painted or unpainted for a gryphon project I will have going in the next 6 months to a year.
I can supply a longer pile fur or real goose/turkey feathers for the sleeve.

Try longer fur, that way you can smooth it out and blend it in over the corvets. :3

What you could do is use super long fur. And I dont mean that horrible gorilla-hair you find at jo-annes. Mendle's [link] shaggy Mongolian might work, or some of [link] cream wisp could do the trick. You could glue in some actual feathers, gradually, including more and more glued-in feathers the closer you get to the flight feathers.

Its expensive, but you could also try double sided minky, then airbrush feather details. However it will lose the stiffness. It might serve you well to just put the fabric sewn in to sleeves around these cut outs, or around foam in the same pattern. You'd probably lose all the believability of this project if you lose the rigid properties of the feathers.
Sleeve wise, I would get long pile faux fur, then trim the fur down to the length you need so you can shape it. You can sometimes also find actual bird pelts with feathers still in tact from crafting websites online. Real feathers are easy enough to paint.

Try useing the monteray mills White Fox fur for the sleeve. They used a similar fur for the "coverts" section of the angel wings in dogma and it worked out well visually.

Perhaps some textured/crushed stretch velvet? It has that nice textured-yet-glossy look. You can sew it on a sturdy backing and it looks really nice.

It looks like your could cap the open hand part and paint the actual wings like bird feathers! It seems like that would be an overhaul just to avoid changing the cover, but if the feathers were more multi-coloured it would make the fur flow in better. ^-^ I am not really sure what your ultimate goal is, though.

Well this wing is my first one, and acts as a proof of concept & test-wing for any structural/material test and changes. My ultimate goal is to make full sets of these in any color that will work, be comfortable to wear, and easy to assemble once completed.
So far they function fine well - they could be more ergonomic, I'll be working on that - once I make the arm-cover there will only be 4 main pieces to worry about putting together.

I'd go with the shorter fur idea, or I used a stretch halloween fabric for something simalar in a MrMistoffellees costume - Either velour or panne would work. If you really didn't want it very flurrfy I would also suggest that you could use bulk felt and "fluff it up" by tearing at it. If you have cats at home, they'll probably do this for you.

Yeah, the current options are styling long fur or sewing strips of feather-shapes onto fabric - I'm trying them both on a small scale first for feasibility, though I'll probably end up doing both to see how they look.

As much as I'm sure you don't want to cut out lots of tiny feathers (I don't blame you), it will probably look better if you do. At the very least, cut out pieces shaped like sections of small feathers. The way the fabric drapes over the smooth, flat feathers really clashes and breaks the whole look.
