Howdy howdy - I've been admiring your lovely wing tutorials for ages, and finally decided to make a pair of raven wings... Incidentally, you've got corvid wings happening here. Could you by any chance tell me how long the longest primary feather is in your set?
I'm struggling to nut out the proportions here, and ravens have those freakishly-long finger-like primaries...
please, please help.

Thanks! And hmmm, good question... *takes out her pattern & measures*

Well, the longest feather has a 35-inch shaft & another 2 inches of fabric, so total 37-inches long. I basically turned the real-life raven measurements from centimeters into inches, to keep the right proportions.

How do you attach those small feathers that are under the wings? The ones with the more stand-out black numbering on them? Did I miss that explaination somewhere?Β

Also check out my leather bird mask so far. It's in my scraps. If you wanna see how it looks so far. Β

Those are the posterboard patterns for the coverts (detailed in part 5 ) and it's the magic of STAPLES - easier with a "long arm" stapler, usually used for stapling booklets, but I used a regular one here. Made it easy to attach securely but still remove easily for readjustment.

Saw the mask, looking cool~

I'm getting there! Β
Question: What's with using paint to glue the feather sides together? Since when does paint act like glue? I'm just concerned about the strength of my feathers using this method. Can you recommend anything to coat them with afterwards to further seal them? I'm going to get paint today, and I will follow your instructions, but I might take an extra step in coating the feathers so they really last.Β

Sunnybrook1 In reply to triggertracker [2013-10-08 16:25:18 +0000 UTC]

Well the fabric I used was thick enough to absorb enough of the paint on both sides that when it dried as one continuous layer the fabric remained attached. If you don't believe me, try making a single test feather & waiting for it to dry before painting the rest, you'll see what I mean.

I still have my original test feather, it worked so well & is quite sturdy, even after getting soaking wet at one point (got a bit floppy but after drying/ironing was stiff & good as new again). Sealing recommendation? Hmmm...some tarp spray that creates a water-repelling barrier is something I always wanted to try, like this stuff gizmodo.com/neverwet-review-th…

oh man. You might like to see my bird mask Im making too. I'll post a photo of that shortly too. Not painted yet, but it's formed leather. Pretty stoked.Β

"And according to the can, its "contents contain a chemical known to cause cancer and birth defects." So that's exciting."Β

Hahaha. What a quote. xDΒ
Thanks for getting back to me. Today I went to a hardware store and got pliers, wirecutters and some matte black acrylic house paint. I hope that does the trick. I probably will do a test feather first, tonight. I have a can of some kind of spray enamel... I might research that a bit. I have no idea if it's ok on fabric.Β

I've cut out all my feathers. Just got a ton of wire-bending and cutting to do now, and a bit more tedious sewing (which I'm awful at, but just go over and over and over so it's strong. Haha. I will keep you updated! I'm stoked you're stoked for me.

Also I don't know what plastic mesh is... so I might just mess with some sleeves or alternative for arm covering.

I hope to make some like these if not by August than october (I'm making a phoenix costume- so lots of feathers..)

Ooh, Phoenix using this will be great! Post pictures please~ What type of Phoenix are you doing? Any reference/example?

Telelia In reply to Sunnybrook1 [2013-04-24 15:55:24 +0000 UTC]

Not really- its loosely based off of an OC I have who's colors range from incandescent greens and reds to her tail being peacock feathers with reds and purples mixed in. The colors will be the same, however I'm going for the avian look (my OC is a hybrid human-avian)

Anyways- I hope to get it done, it'll be fun!

Taito-nii-san [2011-08-02 23:58:04 +0000 UTC]

Are you gonna eventually give out a pattern for these? I wanna make a mini pair and this is by far the best looking wing I have seen.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sunnybrook1 In reply to Taito-nii-san [2011-08-03 05:35:04 +0000 UTC]

Well, maybe - they're so large that even if I make a pattern you'll need to blow them up REAL big to recreate them from a file...hence part 1 of the tutorial, making your own! Glad you like~

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sunnybrook1 In reply to RockBossKiller [2011-07-13 06:02:28 +0000 UTC]

Aaaaaaaaaaah...*scritches head & counts fingers*..........a while. On and off since spring of last year, hard to say exactly. It IS on my list of things-to-figure-out, once I finish my demo & my first pair, I will post an updated expected-completion-time (in hours) and average materials cost (in $/American dollars) on the first part of the tutorial (and here), so no worries~
