Wish I knew how to post a picture. I made a pair for my daughter to wear while skating. I used your general idea for the harness but replaced most components with elastic so it moved more readily as she skates. Thank you so much for your great ideas!

I'm really new to DA, so I'm not sure if I've done this correctly, but, I've uploaded a few photos from the competition. The wings still need some work which will be done before future comps. I need to make them extend further up her back and also need to refine the coverts and add some fabric over the arm. But, they worked beautifully and looked wonderful.

How much do these wings weigh (kg)? Also, just out of curiosity....will part 6 be up soon?
👍: 0 ⏩: 3
Sunnybrook1 In reply to 123animalcrazy [2013-04-08 05:42:42 +0000 UTC]
Last time I weighed them they were about 3.6 lbs each (1.6 kgs?) without the wing-cover, speaking of which I suppose "soon" is a relative term...but not yet, unfortunately. The test-cover I've made looks ok from certain angles but I am dissatisfied with the way it moves.
So currently I am scratching my head trying to modify what I have in a way that looks/works/moves the way I want, but still tempted to breakdown what I currently have so at least ya'll will have something to go off of...think that'd be useful?

I can say to you, it is heavy! Just 2min oben the wing and my arm hurts. You know, it's 9 feathers on your hand with 3mm thick clamp. Today I get ready with both sides, than I can tell you how much it weigh.

I'm impressed that you're using feathers of subtly different shape, as on real birds.

Sunnybrook1 In reply to Ysabetwordsmith [2013-01-24 08:47:58 +0000 UTC]
That's only partly on purpose, they all started out as one of 3 templates, which I then cut and placed by hand - this means no two feathers are exactly alike, which I guess was your comment - thanks for the complement~

👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Sunnybrook1 In reply to 123animalcrazy [2013-01-24 08:50:39 +0000 UTC]
Not yet, I haven't even finished my own pair! This is why I posted the tutorial online, doubly for those do-it-yourselfers out there as well as an alternative solution to my currently platonic progress...trying to heat things up, though~ Wish me luck!
PS - and pricing these babies is hard...materials are one thing, but I don't have enough experience with this to NOT feel weird putting a price tag on my time & effort.

MWAHAHA ALL PART OF MY MASTAH PLAN! But srsly, I don't mean to! I was all set & ready to finish this set when other things got in the way, THEN the longer I looked at it the more unhappy I became w/my version of the arm-cover....anyways, for short I'm gonna just bust it out and hope for the best.
One of these days...

These wings are amazing, I admire your tenacity! I can't wait to see the finished wings....
Unfortunately time constraints mean I will not be making my own....I am in the process making a kids bird adaptation costume for teaching purposes and really fancied myself in a pair of these flouncing around the classroom...but alas the performance will have to wait.
Can you let me know when youget them manufactured in China please....that's a joke, kind of...
cheers Olivia.
