Description My goal tonight was to create an expressive portrait of some kind. I wasn't sure what I was going for, but I thought I'd just start shooting and see what came out. Anyway, I eventually stumbled upon the idea for an X-Men/Superhero type shot. I hope you like it.

This is really cool. Your superpower is a mystery. The whole photo is a mystery to me. Like you are the most powerful X-men but reserve your power for when they really need you.

not knowing what to do can lead to some great things really. the lighting here is so nice. your face looks very good in the shadows. you did manage to capture a superhero feel. but to me it looks like you're about to dig your fingers in your eyes and pop them out before you transform into something ... else. speaking of X-men characters who is your favorite? mine was always Gambit.

Superkev
An ordinary man armed with a 10D and a crazy imagination. Web designer/photographer by day, crime-fighter by night.

I agree with Mary, the shadow does everything in this one. The effect created is simply surreal. The shot looks very menacing. You look like you're about to go through a Hulk-esque transformation. Alas, no transformation is needed.

Great shot, mate!

The lighting is a bit more high-key than your next one is this series. I think that gives it an edgier feel. I got the feeling of intensity. Then when I read the title (and sorry, but this is the first thing that hit me) I got an image of the first Terminator movie. Well done. Great eye contact and lighting of your eyes.

Great! It really reminds me of X-Men or something like that. Your Alien Bees work perfekt, hm? You did a great job on the lighting as always
I believe it was hard work Remote Capturing? (I haven't still figured out how it works )

For a split second I thought you had taken a picture of Dean Cain (I thought Superman) so yes your superhero style shot worked for me.

I'm enjoying the moody quality of this piece, the mysterious feel, the intense eyes, and fantastic pose are great.

I think one day I'd like to use this piece as a reference shot for a drawing.

I'm loving this pose! Overall I like the lighting as well, and think it befits the image beautifully. I am a little bit concerned about your right shoulder and it's apparent overexposure. My eye gets yanked over to the left side of the image too fast due to that I think.

I can't imagine this being all that easy to set up ... for the pose and how you'd fit into the frame. Out of curiosity, how many shots did you take to get it 'just right'?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

superkev In reply to manyk [2003-12-18 19:41:20 +0000 UTC]

Heh. No, it wasn't very easy. I had to set it up close enough to the computer so I could use the Canon RemoteCapture program to take the picture. I think I took about 6 photos similar to this one to get it as "right" as it was going to be. But it's still not perfect, and I'd have to use another model to get it truly "just right."

Gotta love the eyes ... and the coming-out-of-the-dark type of shading you picked. Very interesting and out of the ordinary ... not just a dumb dead-on self portrait (i.e. "let's hold up the camera and see what happens" ... i hate those) Very well thought through.

What do you use for backdrop and studio equipment ? You're one of those few people where I'd like to see a photo of your studio with all the equipment and a detailed description

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

superkev In reply to suntech [2003-12-18 06:01:11 +0000 UTC]

That backdrop is the blue wall of my living room. I *did* splurge on Ralph Lauren paint to get the cool color, but otherwise it's very normal. As for lighting, I used a couple of Alienbees B800 flashes. All of my equipment fits into two bags, so my studio wouldn't be too interesting to photograph. I'll be using my new loft as a studio when I move in in January though. I'll take a picture then. Thanks for the comment!

Absolute love for this image.

It's very stealth-y, which I think diny said in the channel (can't see anyone else's comments right now), and mysterious.

I like the darkness. And the eyes make me think of a raven, ready to fling out it's wings (arms) and swoop up into the night.. Or attack the viewer. But attack the viewer doesn't go with what I know of you.

What is really fascinating is the way your fingertips seem to glow. I guess it's just the nails catching light, but beautifully eerie to my brain.

Nothing to say other than I'd consider cropping the bottom blue area to tighten the shot.

Otherwise... two thumbs up.
