Description I was asked to do a portrait of five people representing five generations of a family. This seemed like it would be fun, and I scheduled the shoot. After shooting, I asked if I could just take some photos with the extreme ends of the family: the newborn baby Elijah (3 weeks old) and his great great grandmother Jean. They had a wonderful rapport together and I hope I was able to capture it.

Tech:
Softbox on boom arm above and behind, facing towards the camera. Softbox at eye level, slightly to the right providing fill light for the front.

GORGEOUS shot....fantastic concept and it was well planned.

Again I'm just wondering what made you choose the large zoom lens over a prime? Just preference? Or is there some advantage I don't know about?

thanks

the large zoom lens is the best one i have. it's a canon 70-200 f2.8L IS USM, and is the perfect lens for my shooting style. it's sharper than most primes and is more flexible too

really sweet. you've deffinetly captured the caring bond between these two. the lighting illuminating her hair almost creates a halo. makes it seem like he's not only reaching out to his grandmother but also to an angel. and of course she has to be wearing the typical pearls and big pin.

The extreme quality and sharpness is surreal. Would you mind telling me what kind of lense you used for this shot?

superkev In reply to neeta [2005-01-02 19:08:49 +0000 UTC]

thank you! i used a canon 70-200mm f2.8L USM IS lens.

Ooh, that's an expensive one.. I would have to save up for a year for that.
But thanks.

superkev In reply to neeta [2005-01-03 02:13:00 +0000 UTC]

yeah it is kinda pricey. but it's worth every penny to me. but anyway, if you want a more inexpensive lens that produces amazing results, check out the sigma EX 105mm f2.8 macro lens. i used it for doing portraits for a long time and it produces excellent results.

neeta In reply to superkev [2005-01-03 10:08:37 +0000 UTC]

I allready have it, I've used it for portraits and macro shots for six months or so, and I absolutely love it. I also have the Canon 28-85, but it doesn't really give me the quality I want. It's ok for scenery shots though.

superkev In reply to neeta [2005-01-04 05:37:34 +0000 UTC]

yeah i'm starting to get very fussy about lenses. the non-IS version of the 70-200mm f2.8L USM is an excellent lens too, especially if you are using studio light and don't need the IS feature. you can save even more by getting the f4.0L version.

Yep, you captured it..the look on her face says it all. The black background is a great choice here, and you lit it perfectly. As I browsed your gallery, I see a lot of great work, but just just jumped right off the screen at me.

A wonderfully heartwarming capture and such a wonderful gift for the family to treasure. Time really is of the essence and you've stolen such a precious moment of it, displaying it's beauty for all of us to see. Small moments that we otherwise take for granted, extraordinary in the eyes of someone who can truly see it's potential.

Another reason you're an incredible photographer.

Great subject. Have the family seen this picture too?

I wish our family was closer than it is. I wish all the generations could get together but I guess that families can sadly drift apart.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

superkev In reply to PhoeniX252 [2004-12-27 04:00:57 +0000 UTC]

yup they're in the middle of choosing prints right now. thanks for your comment. and if you do your best, you can at least keep family from drifting away from YOU.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

PhoeniX252 In reply to superkev [2004-12-27 16:15:22 +0000 UTC]

No problem.

And now for the sentimental stuff ...I notice that as I'm getting older (21 now ) family is becoming increasingly important. In general famillies are there for one another always whereas friends can drift in and out of ones lives. I'm more aware how even some contact with my distant family be it by a quick email or phone call can really mean a lot to both myself and to them, especially my lone relatives. Just the thought that someone is thinking about you can make someones day. I have relatives I haven't seen before or for a long time as they live on the other side of the world. They emigrated to Canada, and part of their family have moved down into the US and I haven't had the means to visit yet. So I keep in contact occasionally as in the future I intend to head over the waters at some point. IU'm not sure when that will be but it will definitely happen. I guess its at this time of year that you have the time to make the effort and spend time with the family over the festive periodwhich can only be beneficial.

Hope you've had a great Christmas.

excellent work tecnically this photography is impressive, the illumination is extremely good and subtle it heightens all the forms. As far as the models the baby is very adorable and that gesture to touch to the grandmother is very tender, you captured an excellent familiar moment, a anthology, the grandmother ia a excellent very elegant lady and her face and expressions are wonderful. I in the past i tried to shape something similar, but they were seven generations, but i couldnยดt to have them together in one picture although the photographies were taken the same day, you can look the personages here [link] and [link]

There is something so special about the love shared between an infant and his great grandmother.

This one reminds me of a shot that I captured of my grandmother and my newborn son. [link]

You have really captured that special relationship in this one! Great job!
