Description *THE IMAGES IN THIS TUTORIAL ARE NOT FOR YOUR PERSONAL USE. THIS IS A TUTORIAL, NOT A STOCK IMAGE. YOU LOOK AT IT AND MAKE YOUR OWN. I DID NOT THINK THAT I WOULD HAVE TO CLARIFY THIS.*

A tutorial for how I personally paint grass. I also sometimes paint fur in a similar manner

PLEASE NOTE:

I usually use the 4th nib, but accidentally used the 3rd for this tut. Either should work well, depending on your personal preference.

ALSO, this isn't a technical issue with the tutorial, but I forgot to mention that backgrounds should become more desaturated the farther back that you go. Keep this in mind when drawing things far away vs close up.

ALSO, if you do not have "noise 2" or "watercolour 3 pt" then just substitute for what you do have. I am not entirely sure how I acquired these extra settings, as I have downloaded multiple user-made custom brush things for SAI. It is possible that these setting came from here-- darlingmionette.deviantart.com… -- yet I am not 100% sure.
But I do not think that there is a significant difference, if any at all, between noise and noise 2.

Painted on SAI.

What do you set your stabilizer to for the grass, if you don't mind me asking?

I also sent you a note about the noise 2 and watercolor 3, I apologize! Although I think I found them here:

This is so helpful, thank you! I tried it and it came out quite all right, but even with the settings you mention, I couldn't get the same result as you. I had to move a lot of values on the pen settings, and even then, it wasn't so good-looking... but maybe it's that I'm a total noob XD anyhow, thank you for this!

Susiron In reply to luliyoyo [2015-01-14 02:32:32 +0000 UTC]

Glad you found it useful! C:
If the settings aren't looking the same, it may owe to how hard you press down on the pen-- or also how you go about your strokes. I tend to press down very hard with my pen, and everyone goes about drawing a bit differently! Settings that work very well for me might not be the best for others, so playing around with the settings some more might prove to have better results. C:

Having a low stabilizer might help also-- if yours is set high. I use very short, quick strokes that don't benefit much from high stabilization so I always have mine set on 3

luliyoyo In reply to Susiron [2015-01-14 19:57:44 +0000 UTC]

I tend not to press the pen much, so I played around with the settings and it worked better. I hadn't thought about the stabilizer, right now I don't remember but I think I had it very high. Thank you for the advice! I'll try it that way
Thanks again for the tutorial and for being so helpful and nice

/lols and then when you were talking about the clouds I thought you were going to say you like to keep them simple for artistic reasons XD
and just I can't fuckin draw them.  This is the best grass I've seen thanks for sharing cuz I suck so bad at grass.

This tutorial it's beautiful and amazing. I'm in love with that grass field.

I've been practicing grass, trees and bushes for some time ago and I've doing some of the things you did in this tutorial, but you have some tips that are so amazing and the result it's so beautiful that I will always have them in mind from... NOW

Thank you so much for such a beautiful tutorial

This is a very helpful tutorial, it is a shame that I don't have a tablet. Do you know which alternatives I can take in order to do (at least) a decent-looking grass field?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Susiron In reply to Tryaget [2014-03-02 06:39:15 +0000 UTC]

Well a table is certainly preferred and would make things a lot easier, but if you take a lot of time and effort into drawing over or erasing the ends of your strokes so they look pointed like grass blades, you might be able to swing something with mouse
