Description *THE IMAGES IN THIS TUTORIAL ARE NOT FOR YOUR PERSONAL USE. THIS IS A TUTORIAL, NOT A STOCK IMAGE. YOU LOOK AT IT AND MAKE YOUR OWN. I DID NOT THINK THAT I WOULD HAVE TO CLARIFY THIS.*

A tutorial for how I personally paint grass. I also sometimes paint fur in a similar manner

PLEASE NOTE:

I usually use the 4th nib, but accidentally used the 3rd for this tut. Either should work well, depending on your personal preference.

ALSO, this isn't a technical issue with the tutorial, but I forgot to mention that backgrounds should become more desaturated the farther back that you go. Keep this in mind when drawing things far away vs close up.

ALSO, if you do not have "noise 2" or "watercolour 3 pt" then just substitute for what you do have. I am not entirely sure how I acquired these extra settings, as I have downloaded multiple user-made custom brush things for SAI. It is possible that these setting came from here-- darlingmionette.deviantart.com… -- yet I am not 100% sure.
But I do not think that there is a significant difference, if any at all, between noise and noise 2.

Painted on SAI.

That would take a lot of time, but guess I don't have another choice. Thanks for your reply!

I used to use GIMP for drawing with a mouse, and I found that there's a "Fade out" setting that you can use, and it will make it look like grass/fur. I'd suggest trying that, it's less time consuming than erasing the ends. >.< -Which I had to do til I found out the Fade out feature-

Wow, thank you for the suggestion! I don't use GIMP, but now that I know this I'll surely download it.

Will this work with firealpaca too?

Susiron In reply to Manga-Samurai [2014-01-20 18:26:38 +0000 UTC]

I believe so-- or at least I don't think that it would be extraordinarily different. This tutorial's more about applying a technique than brush settings, so I see no reason why it wouldn't work decently for other programs as well. I only list it as a SAI tutorial because I myself made it in SAI.

How do you draw the blades of grass without the color being blended into the background? Should I make another layer to draw the individual blades of grass?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Susiron In reply to Kristllrox [2013-11-18 18:57:51 +0000 UTC]

They shouldn't blend straight into the background, but just in case make sure that your "blending" setting is not too high. Also, you may need to press harder, particularly if the colour you are overlapping with isn't different enough from the colour behind it to make a significant difference. You can make new layers if you're really like, but I personally find that detracts from the process.

You should have explained more on how you drew the grass in more detail like what you used and how you do it cause I really like this grass of yours >_<

I really wish patience was an easy thing to gain. I know for a fact I could pull off stuff like this if I actually had the patience to go through the process.

Do you use a tablet to draw? Because I don't have one and I can NEVER find out how to make the tips of the lines thin like this. All my brush strokes come out looking rounded. :c

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Susiron In reply to LegendsAndMyths [2013-09-29 15:24:05 +0000 UTC]

You can never expect to have nice digital lines unless you have a tablet. Unless you have a tablet, or take a LOT of time to erase the ends of your lines to a fine tip, you will never get that nice tapered end.

Apologies for the late reply--

I'm afraid I'm not sure P:

Not very long, however. The field in this tutorial was a bit simple and probably took me half an hour to an hour or so? I don't exactly time myself, however

XD Wow. Even though it's an estimate- it would take me much longer than that. I guess practice, right?
