My latest custom is my first dapple attempt. I actually am pleased with how it came out, in the end I found a great way to do the dapples, a blending tortillon. Even my tiniest brush wasn't sufficient to do these dapples totally in scale, which is what I had to start with. Next time I'll map them out with the tortillon and kneaded eraser and I think it will look much more drastic. My only complaint it the messy tail. I wanted to keep the end of it light in color but since the tail is where I hold it during pasteling, then it was very messy and had to be painted over a little bit.
I seriously need to perfect doing eyes and hooves though. I always save them for last, when doing these guys as well as digital painting and I never really like doing them. Also, I always screw up glazing the eyes. They are just so stinkin' small!
Breyer Stablemate G2 Andalusian pasteled and painted in acrylics by me.

I'm really thinking of trying something like this. Do you know of any tutorials? Also what materials do you need?

Do you me just pastel customizing in general? Or specifically doing pasteling into dapples?
The best tutorial I found was [link] only I found spraying in between the layers with Matte Finish spray is just as effective as the testors dullcote/workable fixative combo (will make sense when you read the tutorial) When it comes to the sprays, (which was the most confusing part for me) some say they can't get the pastel to stick well to the Matte Finish spray, and have to use the dullcote. I haven't had this problem but if I do want the pastels to stick better, I will use the dullcote.
Anyway, sorry for the confusing stuff. Once you read up on it a little that will make more sense I think. That website: [link] is just a general good custom model horse site. Here's a good youtube video: [link]
I hope that's enough to get your started! My advice is to read read read online. Any tutorial you find, read it because everyone does it a different way. Which makes it confusing in the beginning...but it's really not. lol Search custom model horse pastel in youtube or something like it and you'll get results.

The custom pasteling
I've pretty much got the basics down now. Google is such a magical thing XD
What brand of pastels do you use? I read that some brands are good, and some aren't.
Do you think you could use hairspray instead of matte finish? Because the matte finish is basicly a fixative right? I use hairspray as a fixative for my charcoals and stuff (because it's cheap XD). It works the same on paper, but would it on the pastel work?
And for eyes, what do you use to "paint" the eye? Some use a toothpick, does it work?
Thankyou so much for your help

I don't know what brand it is, it's a set I got years ago as a gift. I also picked up at cheap $5 set from Michals and I use both sets. I think any set would work, but it would just take more layers to get the colors to pop with a cheap set.
I haven't used hairspray nor have I heard of anyone using it. Hairspray might wash off? I donno, years from now if you ever went to wipe off some dust of a model you used haiyspray on, I would think it would effect the finish. But I don't know. Walmart has the Krylon Matte Finish [link] for like $4.98? or less and that's like $3 cheaper than a craft store. I also used Krylon primer [link] which is also at walmart and cheap.
You don't need to strip the model before you prime it. Just sand some of the obvious seams. For Breyer if it's a newer model they aren't bad, but the old ones are. Also, you may or maynot have read this yet, but always wear something like latex gloves when working on your model from Priming to finish. The oils in our hands will effect the pastel. I try to only hold one spot on the horse usually the tail, as I work, even when I spray it. This is because usually we end up painting the tail blackish or something like that anyway. But I never left flesh touch the model unless I put the last fixative layer on. It's ok to touch it once your doing the detailed painting work (markings ect.)
For painting the eyes, I use a tiny tiny liner brush. I'm not great at eyes and have yet to do one that I actually like yet so I'm not much help there. Maybe I will try using a toothpick. It could work.
Hope this helps some. Have fun!

you might try listing it here [link] instead of ebay i have never been able to sell any of mine on ebay, but was told this was the sight to sell and ebay was the sight to buy from a fellow customizer.

Yeah, I created an ebay auction and linked it to this site as auction. But it was still no luck.

I don't know much about painting models like these but it seems dapples would be really hard to pull off. Good job!!!

I'm curious - do you use the tortillon to lift the colour off or just for blending? This is certainly the best so fat of your customs

sVa-BinaryStar In reply to femalefred [2012-08-06 19:32:29 +0000 UTC]
I used the kneaded eraser to lift the color, the tortillon to darken around them a tiny bit more. When I went back and darkened the top line, a lot of the dapples were lost so I used the tortillon to go back through and add straight black around them
