In this case, it was a competition someone organised, he provided the refs. But usually for celebrity portraits or fan art, I'll do a Google image search. For other drawings, I get them all over the place - deviantart, my own photos, magazines, calendars... everywhere!

I see! I just get a little nervous sometimes because people might get pissy having their photograph reproduced..

Oh right! Well, with the amount of celebrity portraits on here they'd be at it for a lifetime if they were going to chase people down for it. Anyway, as long as you're not making loads of money off it, I don't see the harm. Honestly, if paparazzi are allowed to snap pictures of people's kids, I really don't see why an artist can't draw a photograph.

Sehr ausfΓΌhrlich ... gefΓ€llt mir verdammt gut, auch das Endergebnis kann sich sehen lassen. Ich mag die Kombination aus Farb und Bleistift !

Thanks, glad that you find it helpful!
I usually don't use a grid, actually. They confuse me and I spend ages erasing and re-drawing them. In this case I think I laid the paper over my laptop screen and marked in two or three lines/dots, and then did the rest by eye.

Ah, I learned a lot from your tutorial! Thank you for posting it!
Despite what you wrote, I actually didn't know the "draw from left to right" rule. It probably should be common sense, in which case I lack it here, but wow! How could I have missed that? I really also love how you put an emphasis on tone. I'll try out what I learned here in some of my work tomorrow.
Thank you again! It was a very informative and helpful read!

Really? That's so cool!
I learned the left-to-right rule here on deviantART myself, actually. So I missed it too. I'm glad you found this useful though, that's awesome! Thanks for letting me know and all!
And let me know how it goes for you if you want!

So it's been a long time since I left my original comment (unfortunately been backed up with a lot of projects), and the picture I was specifically working on using this tutorial has yet to be finished... BUT I did put what I learned here to use on this picture here: [link]
That left to right rule is awesome to know (I wish I knew it sooner, lol), and I'm glad I'm pushing my pencil drawings darker. It creates more value and brings the picture to life. I'll be sure to send people your way in the future. Thanks again!

As a traditional artist brand new to digital techniques, I find that the traditional methods remain incredibly powerful through work such as this.
Thanks so much for sharing it.

just read it and it is very helpful except maybe with each step you should put the pencil used, but other than that great work!

Well, I used lots of different pencils throughout, really... I tried to point out when I used a specific one, but most of the time when I draw, I switch between pretty much all of them, so. But thank you!
