it does look like a smooth, which is great, since they're rather under-represented... and according to the reading I've been doing, they more closely resemble the ancestral chow than the rough. I'd post the links that I found that at, but I can't seem to find them or remember where they were

Of course I'd love the group :3 Non-sporting has been a fav group for pretty much forever, though I think herding and hounds top it overall :3

X3 I wanna Finkie sooooooooooo bad! My husband and I were going to get one, but there aren't many breeders for them, and they don't do so well in the South I understand. *le sigh*

I have a friend with a half Schipperke, she's an annoyingly overprotective dog but sweet once you know her. She withstood seven small children, she'd have to be. XD

And didn't a Aussie win the AKC show just a few days ago? I caught just the very end of it. Beautiful dog. :3

Schippes are great I think. if they're bred to be protective, they'll be protective!

I sadly did not watch that, but from what I hear the Aussie did win and he or she was a very gorgeous dog. :3

I know, aren't they? *loves them* But they are cold weather dogs, and I am not a cold weather person. Sadly, I do not think it would work. And they're expensive and good breeders are hard to find in the US especially.

I didn't watch it either, but it looked excellent-not often you have an Aussie win a competition I think, although I would've been happier if he/she'd been a merle. Love that coloration.

And I didn't mean to say that she wasn't awesome, just that I felt bad for her having to live in the house with all those little kids grabbing all over her (and I don't say that without warrant; these kids were VERY ill-behaved). he he he. Callie's like that-if she even hears someone NEAR the front door to the apartment, she has a fit! I'm working on trying to limit her to people knocking or entering the doorway. Although I have reservations about taking that behavior away from her-once we move into a house I'd want her to be like she was (barking at everyone within 50 ft) and I'm not sure how that'd work. *ponders*

How's everything goin' your way, babe? Christmas shopping season has officially started over here, it's a madhouse! *laughs*

I'm not a cold weather person either. which turned out just as well for me that I like desert-bred breeds. xD My IG loves that we live on a tropical island. Ah well that is too bad, but you could visit some, surely? couldn't hurt to just visit a breeder and take a look at the dogs. :3

poor dog. D: some people just don't understand the importance of dog-proofing children. it's no wonder some kids get bitten, if they don't leave the dog alone. you'd like her to be more "guard-y" in a house, then?

eh, I'm fine. ^^ I have homework I need to be doing that I'm putting off, as usual. >>;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kettish In reply to swift-whippet [2007-11-25 22:21:03 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'd like to go visit, but I'm one of those people that's dangerous even in Petsmart: I want to adopt EVERYTHING. XD So maybe. We're getting a GSD instead I think. Still a good dog, just not quite as different as I would've liked.

I know, I felt so bad for her all the time!!! And yeah, I'd like Callie to sort of expand her guard when the territory expands, y'know? I live next to a stairwell in my apartment, so it's a bit nerve-wracking to hear her alert and sound off every time someone goes past, but in a house that's what I'd want from a watchdog. She'll probably take that alright, but I'm worried that she'll think that just because she gets to bark again, she can do ANYTHING SHE WANTS. XD 'Cause she will if I let her!

Do iiiiiiiiiiiit! Homework is important, dammit! I never did mine, and it cost me grades, which in turn have cost me scholarships. I'm having to go to a technical school now because I can't pay for a university or even a community college. Don't be the one!!!!

swift-whippet In reply to toastify [2007-11-25 02:07:44 +0000 UTC]

Shar Pei are indeed awesome.

No dog has aggression as a specific breed trait. No. Dog. If any dog is people-aggressive then it's either a training or a psychological problem. ('no bad breeds, just bad owners', anyone? doesn't just apply to bullies.) Eskies are spitzes after all, which means that they are guardians and therefore more protective. That can lead to temperament problems if they are not trained according to their needs.

"The American Eskimo Dog is intelligent, alert, and friendly, although slightly conservative. It is never overly shy nor aggressive, and such dogs are to be severely penalized in the show ring. At home it is an excellent watchdog, sounding a warning bark to announce the arrival of any stranger. It is protective of its home and family, although it does not threaten to bite or attack people. The American Eskimo Dog learns new tasks quickly and is eager to please."
-American Eskimo Dog Breed Standard

I assume you mean the Schipperke? they're a lovely breed. thank you!

Lulz, and the puppies are too much.. xDDD Just piles of fur.

I hear that all the time, but the animals dogs were bred from were aggressive and unpredictable, so it's logical to think that some breeds aren't too far removed (or were bred for qualities other than tameness).. c: That's a reasonable answer; however, he does snap at people other than my aunt and uncle despite their efforts to train him. They adopted him at a year or so.. maybe it was the previous owner? /:

And sure thing~ ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to toastify [2007-11-25 22:43:09 +0000 UTC]

I disagree. I don't think that wolves are unpredictable, and definitely not aggressive without reason to be. in their natural environment they are really quite fascinating and complex creatures, and dogs are the same way if you ever watch them. and dogs and wolves alike are social animals; unpredictable snappy animals that act without provocation are no good to a social group of any sort. a great deal of 'bad' dogs were just acting in normal canine ways that their owners interpret as being 'aggressive' or 'dangerous', and a lot of dogs that could be perfectly good if worked with to combat their issues are put down or ruined. it's because people don't understand the way that they communicate, or don't bother to listen.

if he had a previous owner, it could very well be issues stemming from something there. I'd ask a dog behaviourist. Suzanne Clothier, one of my new heroes, has written some wonderful articles dealing with aggression and other behaviour issues here: [link]

toastify In reply to swift-whippet [2007-11-26 02:25:17 +0000 UTC]

Well, yeah.. :3 Wolves are beautiful animals and I love them for their behavior-- they seem to be mostly inquisitive and family-oriented in the wild-- and I've seen plenty of videos and TV programs showing captive wolves treating trusted humans as packmates, but in the same respect, it's probably not a good idea to run up to a wild wolf like one would a dog. There's a reason why wolfdogs with over a certain percentage of wolf in them require permits.. and I've heard horror stories of such dogs that instinctively attacked a running child or another dog. Unfortunately, I know someone who owned a german shepherd that was the perfect pet for a year or so, and then one day the shepherd tore her other dog's throat out, unprovoked. /: She said the dog just snapped. I mean, she said she understood that the dog-- Peanut-- wasn't "bad" or "dangerous," and she still has and loves her. *Headscratch* I think I sort of lost my "flow" there, but in short, sadly, some dogs are bred for aggression or protectiveness that can lead to aggression. I hear plenty about attacks by pit bulls and german shepherds-- even those never exposed to fighting or cruelty-- but nothing about, say, dachshunds or rat terriers.

But it's good that people still press training through understanding behavior; that's why I like Cesar Millan.. :3 He looks pretty crazy sometimes, but really, he understands how a dog thinks and behaves, and teaches other people how to do the same.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to toastify [2007-11-26 02:41:32 +0000 UTC]

well I can't say I would just run up and grab any dog either. that is just asking to get bitten. dogs are not all fluffy cuddly endlessly patient man's best friends, they have needs and feelings like any other animal and should be dealt with in terms that they can understand. a large percentage of dog attacks or 'aggression cases' occur because NORMAL dog behaviour was either misinterpreted or ignored.

oh, and dog-dog aggression isn't the same as dog-human aggression. no dog breed was created to be aggressive to humans, who would breed a dog that nobody could handle, and that was unpredictable and dangerous? there would be no point to it.

also? just because it's not in the news doesn't mean it doesn't happen. ANY dog breed can be aggressive and dangerous if not trained properly. breed doesn't matter. it's just that the press is ALL over it if it's a pit or a 'dangerous' dog, and they blow it up. look how many nasty bitey small dogs there are that exist, because their owners don't feel the need to train them properly. it makes me sick.

Cesar Milan is awesome, but he's not the only dog behaviourist that exists. just sayin'. I learnt tons from dog behaviour just from watching one episode of Victoria Stillwell's 'It's Me Or The Dog', and from Suzanne Clothier's wonderful book 'If Bones Would Rain From The Sky'.

toastify In reply to swift-whippet [2007-11-29 02:07:46 +0000 UTC]

xD Well, neither would I, but just for demonstrative purposes.. people do. Little kids do, because they wouldn't know the difference between their cuddly pet and a dog tempered to guard property. (Not to mention how much that bothers me, but ehh.) But still, it seems like some breeds are more inclined to aggression. When people look for dogs to train for guard work, they pick breeds like dobermans and rotties and boxers (though I knew some boxers quite personally, and they're some of the sweetest dogs I've ever met), while other perfectly capable breeds-- they may even be larger, stronger, or faster-- are overlooked. I think it's a vestigial trait, since other dogs exhibit traits selected by humans.. like following their nose halfway across the city or digging a yard full of holes for no apparent reason. But that's very true as well; a breed commonly used in an aggressive way could be a small child's best friend. It really does depend on how they're raised and trained.

Ohyeah.. D: I sort of lost my flow there. When she witnessed it, and leaped in to try to save the smaller one, the shepherd sank her teeth into her arm, which ended up damaging the nerves in her left arm. (Dember-- on Kenopets-- was the one it happened to. I never go on Keno anymore, but she has it typed up on her site.) I mean, I'm not saying certain breeds are inherently mean and attack for no reason, but it's hard to get more than a smarting nip from a little bitey dog. xD Yeah, there are plenty of nasty bitey small dogs (our chihuahua was a cranky little thing when he got older.. he bit my face once. o__o;; So yeah. I know.). But unfortunately, the bigger breeds are the ones that could seriously injure someone and the ones that get the press coverage. All dogs should be trained properly, regardless of size.. Dx I agree; it's like people think little dogs are accessories instead of animals.

Ahh, I saw a couple episodes of "It's Me or the Dog." :333 It's really amazing how they crack into weird behaviors.. I wish I could have someone figure my dog out, lawl.. xD He's pretty dysfunctional.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to toastify [2007-11-29 03:18:42 +0000 UTC]

and people need to stop doing it, really.

if you leap into a dogfight, you're asking to get bitten. seriously.

my little dog has drawn blood from a bite when she was a puppy, and got too excited playing with us. she has since learned better manners, but smaller dogs are just as capable of seriously injuring people with their bites as big ones. and it bothers me more because people think "oh, a little dog, it won't need to be trained because I can't get more than a smarting nip from it" and they don't bother to train their dogs properly and end up with really quite dangerous brats. have you EVER been bitten by a little dog? it is more than 'just a smarting nip', let me tell you. they are quite capable of biting deep.

dachshunds and rat terriers, the small breeds you mentioned? bred to hunt badgers, rats and other vermin. they were selected to be fierce, fiesty and very aggressive, and I know of aggressive dogs of both those breeds. ANY DOG can be potentially dangerous and aggressive, and people need to stop looking at it in terms of size and potential danger. it doesn't help anyone.

why don't you read some books or articles on canine psychology and behaviour? you might gain some new insights into your dog.

toastify In reply to swift-whippet [2007-11-29 04:03:48 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah. ._.;; But I respect her as far as courage goes, and the fact that she did it to try to save the other dog. Despite the fact that it was sort of dumb and probably spur-of-the-moment, it was ultimately an act of love. I don't think I could stand around if my dog was being attacked.

Other than almost having my nose laid open, not really. xD I don't doubt that there are aggressive small dogs-- in fact, most of the aggressive/nasty dogs I've known are sized miniature poodle (that poodle is the most malevolent creature I've seen.. My sister's friend's dog. The first and only time I ever ran away from a dog; the damn thing was practically foaming as she bared every little fang she had, and then she just *charged* at me. I spent the rest of my time there inside. xD) and down-- but it's just that it's a lot easier to fend off or protect yourself from a smaller dog. Whereas bigger ones.. o_o; I fear for my life when they're overexcited and leaping up on me. I've been bruised and nearly knocked down with enthusiasm.. Add teeth, and that's a scary thought. I mean, I'd hate to have to resort to something like that, but if a little dog was relentlessly attacking me, I could probably give it a good enough whack to at least get somewhere safer. Except maybe Auggie. xD He runs full-speed into walls and sliding glass doors unfazed.

I should.. he hates the weirdest things.. like men-- even though we got him as a puppy, so there wasn't room for mental trauma. And typical dog phobias like thunder and fireworks. I watched a Cesar Millan episode with a dog that was afraid of men.. O: I'll revisit that one sometime.

swift-whippet In reply to toastify [2007-11-29 04:22:43 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn't have been able to either. just saying that if you interfere with a dog fight you are GOING to get bitten.

I understand your point, but my point still stands that ANY dog can become aggressive, not just the typical breeds like pits and shepherds that are blamed for it. there are many pit bulls who have been trained as fighting dogs yet become wonderful pets when rescued from the ring. all dogs should be treated and trained according to who they are as individuals, not what size they come in or even what breed they are. breed traits might tell you what you can expect, but all dogs are still individuals.

Oh yeah. xD

Yeah.. .w. I don't know. I didn't mean to villainize them as breeds, but they're the ones that get the media's attention. I always see the stories about pit bulls that rescue kittens, nurse tiger cubs, babysit kids.. the breed bans just make me sick. And I love shepherds to death.. xD I'd love to have one, but I don't think I would be able to give it adequate time and exercise, nor am I sure I could socialize it properly. I just like to debate. :'3 Tch, I can't even think of a response for the breed trait bit.. it sums it up about perfectly.
