Fwee, I have nothing of note to upload right now, so have some rough test backgrounds for my thesis film that I'll be working on this year. It was a bit of an effort at first, since y'all know I'd much rather be drawing characters any day, but I sort of got into the swing after a while, and I'm quite pleased with these on the whole considering I don't normally do this kind of thing.The whole bottom row was done with one of my school's new cintiqs - at the moment I'm still in the process of getting used to them, but hey, it's cool. They've also got Sketchbook Pro newly installed on all of them which I am excited to try out.
fwee. Last bottom right is sort of crappy because I rushed it, but I was just trying to get my ideas out and it won't look so rough in the final. :3Feedback would be appreciated, especially from people with more experience doing backgrounds/layouts etc.!

I'm a little late responding and not going to be any help considering my terrible work with backgrounds, but I do love your amazing use of texture even in the low light, and how great they all look with that green overtone. The only one I dislike is actually the top left; I think it looks much different from all of the other ones. Would like to see a few more branches on the tree and maybe a bit more detail in the leaves, at least on the shadows on the underside. Can't give critique on the others because they look so damn good! Great stuff

I wasn't too hot with backgrounds and layouts myself, but taking classes for it at school really helped me a lot! My grades weren't the best, but I learnt a great deal. :3

You used a very good selection on levels for a jungle. Canopy, mid areas, looking down etc. This should give you a lot of room to play around in.

I like these! ^^ Hmmn, a film? 8D That sounds interesting. Third row = Love love love. I love the first picture in that one, I like how the durians somehow blend in with the background, yet stand out. Did you use references for these?
It's just my opinion, but I feel that for the first row, leftmost picture, it might look a wee bit nicer if you a little bit more shading on the leaves; right now it looks a little... flat. Also, I think- just my opinion- if you gave the sky a slightly green hue, it might go better with the other backgrounds? I know, not very realistic, but its art. XD But if that's the way you like it, keep it that way! ^^

Yep! My final year project, I'll be working all this year. I used references to get a feel for the jungle, but really the only things I actually referenced in terms of shape and form were the bird's nest fern and the banyan tree. Third row wasn't referenced at all, though I did look at some picture earlier on to see how durians grew on trees. xD
You're probably right, someone else also brought up that the sky colour doesn't go with the trees. Hrm. I'll have to figure something out. Green sky, lawl! I might try the sky and the trees with different colour combis to see what works. Thanks so much, Rainne! <3

And oh my gosh, I LOVE the angle on the middle one in the bottom row. That's got to be one of my favorite angles to see things at in films, it's so dynamic! Makes me feel like I'm gonna fall or something XD!

number 2 : egads, I love the effect you get just by adding that leaf in the foreground. LOVE.
Number 3 : possibly my favorite in the bunch, I love that the colors are slightly different than the others, more faded.
Line 2:
Number 3 : LOVE. This one is the one that makes me think there's a story to these, moreso than them just being random backgrounds.
Line 3 :
Number 1 : Love the odd angle, makes me think of you drawing some scurrying critter running along the branch and peering downward. <3
Number 3 : Love the DARKness of this one. Very deep, very shaded.

I'm pleasantly surprised you like the very last one! I rushed it, so it looks rough and unrefined. But I'm glad the general feel of it is there - it's what I was going for.

Honestly, I don't feel that I can give you any useful advice on what to do BETTER with backgrounds. I need to learn more about them myself before I can really do that. I can tell you which ones I liked, but even if I tried to explain why I didn't like the others as much, it probably wouldn't be useful.
As to the last one, it does look less refined than the others, but it has a MOOD and feel all of it's own, rushed or not. =]

GORGEOUS. I almost choked on my Moe's cafe french fries. lol These thumbnails are ridiculously good. Even with some of them rough, they'd already make some pretty impressive backgrounds if you ask me ('course, I'm like you and don't do backgrounds at all, so what do I really know? XD). Still, they're just lovely. Oh my goodness--the first on the second row is fabulous. Seeing these makes me even more curious about your film.

I still have to actually render them out for the final (which makes me go D; ) but oh well, I guess at least half the job is done! I need to do some animation tests, I'm keen to see them in motion. Likely that'll be the boost I need to fire me up.

One tiny crit: the top row, farthest to the left, the sky's blue is really... strong, and doesn't go very well with the greens of the jungle. Maybe make it lighter and add some white clouds or something. Mostly just lighten it I think.
Anyhow these are all SO much better than I could do, even for thumbnails. Dx God. The painting is so pretty and the colours! They really look like... jungles. Really beautiful. I can't wait to see the final product. x_x

Hrm, I actually wanted a strong blue for that sky. Looking at it now, maybe it should be more blue and less turquoise and I should probably put the sun in there somewhere, beating down - eee. Thank you! I'll do a variety maybe and see how they look.
