Cute, cute, cute! Also, this is very helpful. This is the only tutorial I have seen that starts from scratch and leads all the way through.
I am just starting to try making emoticons--and this was JUST what I needed! I was getting tired of seeing tutorials that already assumed I had made an emoticon before. You are writing for an audience who knows nothing about emoticons, and leading them through each step. I really appreciate this tutorial.
Plus, it is nice and simple. It doesn't take thirty minutes to muddle through. I give you an A+! Thanks SO much!

Ha... thats very sweet.. it looks simple... but the magic behind can be tedious and everyone wants to make it cute and smooth and something which hasnt been thought of yet.. thanks to these amany people can attempt that!

In my experience I've always made blinking a 5-frame process (neutral-halfway-closed-halfway-neutral), but that's just me. I find that it looks just a little smoother.
Still, this is a good tutorial for those who aren't in the know.

Hmmm, I have a couple of problems with this. Firstly the shading, the emote is a ball yet you've gone for a right angled shading method, may I ask why?
Also the animation, you should never set it a frame to 0 as theoritically it leaves no time for movement in between, this generally makes every movement rapid and aggressive. For a blink I'd suggest using 0.1 seconds for change in expression and again for the nod.
Also the mouth is very sudden, perhaps an intermediate state between the circle and the smile, like a - or something with a slight curve.

Layering.. of course.. Why didn't I think of that before I started to use MS-Paint?!
Until now I've been adjusting the whole image every time for these.. [link] and newer ones.. *slaps self in face*
Paint's color selection's still easier than photoshop's..
