Description
Here is a tutorial that I've meant to do for a while now, but really pushed to have finished before school started.
This is basically how I draft my kimono/yukata and faki-mono outfits (flip through my gallery for examples of some of them). A lot of people seem to have problems with them, and I had a lot of requests for this tutorial, so I hope you all appreciate the 8 hours it took to do this (and in a PDF, no less!)
This is really detailed, so that if you're new to sewing, you can follow it! If ~kellin could follow it, I have no doubt anyone can do this! So give it a try!!
I tried to document every step that you need to do as clearly as possible, so you shouldn't get lost! With lots and lots of technical illustrations!
I think there could still be a few spelling/gramatical errors floating in this, so I'm sorry about those! Also, this is the first time I've made a PDF, so please be kind and let me know if there are any issues - I've checked and re-checked it through, but if I did something weird, please let me know. I'm still new to using InDesign (most of the work was done in Illustrator) so there may be some issues there
I would ask that you do not sell anything you make with this tutorial. I know that there isn't a way to enforce this, so I'm appealing to your conscience.
Any questions? Just ask! I'm always glad to answer!
If you make something from this tutorial, throw me a link so I can see! That's the reason why I do tutorials, to see what other people can come up with!!

Hooray! I'm glad to be of help!! It isn't a traditional kimono, or the "correct" way to make a Japanese one, but I'm hoping soon to take apart one I just purchased and resize it to fit me (the down side to being over a size 16 in Japan - nothing like this fits my boobs!) -- I'll take pictures and point out the significant differences and post them, they might be helpful if you want to make a more realistic kimono :3

It may not be the most traditional way, but it's kinda a first step for those who would like to make their own kimono, so it works! And I know what you mean about sizes xD So true! ButΒ oh my goodness, that would be amazing! I can't wait to see what exactly the differences are, or if it is pretty similar. And thanks again! >w<

thanks for putting yet another fine tutorial together for us. Β There are people who say a Kimono is so easy to sew, I beg to differ to that remark. Β Although it appears to be easy, it's also kind of confusing. Β I have a few Kimono's in storage and have looked at them before and it still amazes me how they come together and the amount of fabric it takes to make one. Β If anything, I think I would try to make a "doll" size one to test the waters, then perhaps venture on to an adult kimono. Β I know you worked hard on putting this tut together and for your time and effort, thank you!!

Nevermind I figured it out. But, i'm afraid to attempt this because I have to make a short tight-fitted kimono and I don't know what variations I will have to do. You're entire Step #4 confuses me and you don't have a finish product at the end and that is probably where I will screw everything up.
You're tutorial is great and I love it but I feel like I will screw up if I follow it.

Um, I'm already confused with step one. I got confused with the whole fold and perpendicular, the picture doesn't seem to be helping either.

The only problem I had with this tutorial was sewing the side seams. Those were bitches. But that is probably due to my inexperience.

I have a question, and I'm sure you've been asked this a lot already. Where would you buy fabric that would make a good kimono? Granted once one has mastered it on simple plain sheets ^^ Is thee store or maybe an online store you would recommend? ^^

oh my goodness!! Perfection!! Ok, so I haven't actually made it yet, so who knows if I can re-create your perfection... but THANK YOU!!! This is such a great, clear, well illustrated and worded tutorial that I am SO excited to make! Both for myself, and my 2 year old daughter! I have no idea how to send links with pics, but if I get one done (I'm terrible about not following through with project ideas) I'll give it a shot!
Thank you again!!

No problem! The secret to sewing is just to keep doing it. If something turns out badly, it's not a reflection of you, it just did, so throw it out and try again! The next will always be better than the one before it :3

For step 1, do you cut the 3 feet of fabric from the 3 yards before you start drafting (I'm doing yukata sleeves)? Or don't you?
And also, for the sash you said it would be 1-1.5 yards. Does that mean you would buy 4 yards of fabric from the store or just 3 and one yard of that would be used for the sash? What length do you recommend?
Sorry for all the questions.
