Description
Well, I needed a break from doing this for hours! So, I took pictures while I was going (as per the usual) of appliqueing the clouds onto the Itachi robe I have on commission (that I have to have done this weekend/early next weekSo... I hope you can find this helpful, as well! It's a grand alternative to the Fakie Screen-Printing Tutorial for a way of applying color or design.
I'll probably wind up coming in and editing this description shortly; I'm just too tired right now! That was a lot more work (both the cloud things, and the tutorial) than I thought it would be!
I have one question for Naruto fans, though: why is there only one cloud on Itachi's outfit that goes backwards? The one on the back, as per this reference - [link] Why just one?! *drives me crazy*

Wow, this is useful. o__o Thank you!
About the clouds: In the newer Shippuuden chapters(manga) the whole robe only has four clouds, and none of them go backwards.

Indeed!!
I really wanted to do this, to make Fai's robe from Tsubasa, but alas... time got away from me again this year... I was going to do it for my friend, Steve Mebbe next year...

Hm, my next/first big cosplay project will be making Halley into Hiro Nakamura .
The most expensive thing will be the sword , but I can't complain about that price. Most difficult thing to find will probably be the sweater. All the rest I'm sure I'll run into at one point or another, or have a fairly easy time of creating the look of (like the white on the shoes, and the green stripes on the messenger bag).

making tutorials lately... although I still think I be too wordy with them
I didn't bother revising this one, which is probably a mistake

Sam, I wish I could kiss you right now, this is made of AWESOME smothered in EPIC WIN sauce!!! I'm totally gonna use this for alot of my cosplays now! Especially my two Zelda dresses; save me alot of time and frustration with doing everything with paints.

taeliac In reply to Liquidfire3 [2008-08-17 15:58:33 +0000 UTC]
Now I'm really happy to hear that! It definitely is a great way of doing it - something I *just* found out this morning - they make liquid to dip cotton fabrics in, that makes inkjet ink stick to it, and then you could do shading and whatnot digitally, too, and just print it out and applique it on
I can't wait to get an excuse to try it, now!
But, I'm so happy to have helped! I hate seeing stuff like that painted on; it (usually - I have seen one good Midna) looks so lumpy and heavy and... well, crunchy XP

Liquidfire3 In reply to taeliac [2008-08-19 02:57:40 +0000 UTC]
I seriously can't wait to get started on something! LOL, wow, what a discovery! Keep me informed on that, and maybe make a tutorial on that too!
Well, I'm still going to paint Midna's designs on, mainly because of how large and complicated they are, but also because I'm going to water down my white paint and make it look more aged, not crispy and WHITE like I've seen it done! But I'm totally using this technique on Zelda's tabards and the embroidery on the bottom of her TP dress.

Oh my god. Thanks so much! I had no idea how to do applique via machine, only by hand; and while doing it by hand I make it look nice and can do near invisible stitching, it takes FOREVER. I can totally use this in the future. *_*

Oh, it's fine, I do the same thing.
Falling behind on Deviantart is so tedious to fix. Once I left for a week and when I came back I had over 1000 deviations and notes to dig through.
I started editing my watch list after that....

What sewing machine(s) do you use?

I have a Janome QC ... I can't remember the number. It is a higher-end Janome that is built for quilting, which is one reason it makes applique go so fast - it was a really quick stitch speed

My mothers machine (the first one I blew up from too much sewing
) was way older than I, but could do the zig zag, just not quite as close as some of the newer one's - you can definitely space them out more, too

How about the super old cast iron antique sewing machines. jk. My mom has one of those, but we don't use it. My sewing machine is a hand me down. I should see it if it has zig-zag.

taeliac In reply to Sparrow-dream [2008-12-09 00:53:30 +0000 UTC]
Ooooh! I don't know... some of them do zig-zags, but not all of them... my friend owns a couple of them, including one that is powered by a hand crank!!
Otherwise, you can always straight stitch on whatever you're doing, and just be sure you're using felt or something that doesn't fray
