Description Download is must. This is pretty big file so click download to get it in real size.

So, here's the tutorial/document I promised. It shows you few tricks that you can do when coloring your picture. Nothing too fancy. Unfortunately, this doesn't teach you how to draw. That's what you have to learn yourself.

I used photoshop but I'm pretty sure you can do the same with other programs. As long as you can use layers you're fine. If you have questions, ask (this is the first tutorial I've ever made so I undestand if you didn't understand something).

Hope you learned something.

That last step has kind of helped me get my drawings a little bit smoother (and a little blinding) like this one here: arcane-dreams.deviantart.com/a…

Thank youΒ for this tutorial.

Well the one thing that's really hard for me is the lineart. Do you know any tricks for lineart in general?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TamarinFrog In reply to Stormysprite [2010-03-13 06:42:54 +0000 UTC]

Well, I use wacom pen tablet which makes computer drawing MUCH easier. But most of the time I draw my lineart with pencil and scan it so I can color it on computer. One easy trick with scanned linearts is that you change the lineart layer mode to "multiply" so you don't need to worry about the white.

Wow this creates a real good effect. It's a good idea to make a tutorial too keep everyone happy and your totally right in your description the learning to draw part we have to learn that on our own. I'm definiletly going to this. I have a question where do you get your inspiration for you pictures, or do people request them??? Thanks for the great contribution too deviantart!!

How did you get Photoshop?

The-Fat-Red-Dragon [2009-05-31 14:03:43 +0000 UTC]

I'd like to know how you're colouring, because I've been using the same Multiply filter on the Lineart technique, but I still get white lines. Even when I use a huge resolution picture, and also spam the paint bucket.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TamarinFrog In reply to The-Fat-Red-Dragon [2009-05-31 14:14:15 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... I don't get white lines but if I use paint bucket, it's normal that there are some white near the lines so I use bucket to color big areas and brush to fix lineart areas.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

The-Fat-Red-Dragon In reply to TamarinFrog [2009-05-31 14:16:42 +0000 UTC]

Bah. Looks like what seemed to be unnecessary effort actually is required. Oh well, I end up making the lineart 30~40% opaque, so it wouldn't matter in the end anyway. Perhaps it's time to find a new approach.

found it

okay, i really don't know anything, i have photoshop and i use it to edit photos of people, but just the simplest things like colouring in, i don't know how to do.

i know the tutorial isn't supposed to be about that, but how do you do it ?
and how did you make the shadows and lighter areas in the first place, i thought you were going to tell me how, and then they were there with no explanation lol

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TamarinFrog In reply to DoctorClarkez [2009-05-26 11:02:44 +0000 UTC]

Eh, there are no special tricks to make shadows or lighst. I just pick slighty darker color and draw the shadow lines and then use paint bucket to fill the shadow area. That simple. You just have learn how shadows works and decided where the light comes from.

once i've drawn the picture and coloured it in, i'll folow your tutorial,
thanks

Yeah Am really bad at coluring stuff, well not so much the coloring, but the lineart, its way too grainy. How do you make it look so clear and do you actually ink the lineart or scan it straight in? Sorry bout the interrogation XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TamarinFrog In reply to robmagelska [2009-04-13 08:28:29 +0000 UTC]

I make the sketch version of picture, then I draw it again to another paper by tracing. That way they are pretty clean when I scan them. Then I fix it digitally. I clean it and redraw (again) some parts. It can take me almost an hour (in computer) to make the lineart as best as possible before I start coloring.

robmagelska In reply to TamarinFrog [2009-04-13 09:09:33 +0000 UTC]

Hmm.... Quite cpmplex but very useful! I'll try this next time i scan. Thanks and keep up the good work!

When you scan an image, how do you get rid of stuff like eraser marks n' other so that the image comes out like in the beginning of the picture?

Awesome stuff by the way.
