  “Galaxy!”
Sky’s head whipped around to the exuberant, feminine voice that echoed out over the elegantly tiled lobby of Vienna International Airport above the cacophony of phone calls, chatter, rolling suitcases, intercom flight announcements, and food court beeps, sizzles and chimes. “Heather!” he smiled wide, opening his arms as the slender woman launched into his arms like a ball of energy slung from a slingshot. Squeezing her tight, he buried his face against her cheek. “Man, I’ve missed the hell out of you,” he laughed.

“I’ve missed you too,” the pale haired woman settled to her feet, looking up at her cousin. “Stealing my hairstyle I see.” Reaching up, she ran her fingers through the choppy white fringe of hair that hung over Sky’s face, her mouth dropping open as the pale hair turned pink under the heat of her fingers. “What the shit?” she exclaimed excitedly.

“Color changing dye,” Sky shrugged with a smirk, thoroughly enjoying his cousins bemusement. “Team spirit and all.”

“That’s pretty damn cool,” she grinned. “So, wanna get out of here?”

“Yeah, we’ll get a cab. Drop your stuff off an maybe we can go do some sightseeing?” Grabbing the handle of his cousin’s suitcase, he gestured towards the door.

“Shouldn’t you be spending time with your team?” she cocked her head towards him, looking up over her brow.



“Well,” Sky defended sharply. “I mean, yeah, but I’ve got all year to spend with them. I haven’t seen you in ages. I’m sure they won’t be missing my company for one afternoon.”

“Alright then,” Heather shrugged. “Where to first?”

  “Ughhh,” Heather groaned, rudely awakened by the sudden and bright screen of her cousin’s phone shining stark against the dark room. Rolling over and heaving the plush comforter over her head, she mumbled from beneath the covers. “Whatime isit?”

“Six,” Sky yawned, scrolling through his phone with a tired gaze.

“PM!?” Heather immediately jumped up, instantly regretting that decision as the room spun around her. Flopping back down, she decided she didn’t care what time it was, she was not getting up.

“AM. Horse world starts early you lightweight. You barely drank last night, get up.” Raising a brow, he looked over at the lump of human occupying the room’s other queen sized bed. “Up,” he repeated, heftily chucking a pillow at her.

“EY!” she yelled indignantly. “Fuck off.”

“Awh, so hurtful,” Sky crooned, feigning insult as his hand rested over his heart. “Come on, you’re here to be my groom, remember? We have to be at the stable by seven.”

“What in seven hells for? You don’t ride until three.” Heather groaned again, her hand slipping out from beneath the covers to retrieve her phone.

“Like I said, stable life starts early. Feeding, grooming and turning out Marlo. Oiling my saddle. Getting her tacked and war-”

“Why on earth would I oil your saddle?” Heather poked her head out from under the covers now, looking disgustingly confused. “Won’t you slide off?”

Sky looked as if he lost IQ points simply by listening to her. “Seriously? You know horses Heather, we used to ride together.”

“Yeah, on beat up old horses with beat up old tack on beat up old trails. I don’t do this fancy showmanship thing.”

“Then why are you here?”

“I don’t know, because you asked me to.”

“Alright, well… we better get moving then. I’ll have to move double if I’m gonna teach you how to do your job.”

  “Oh fuck me….” Sky stood, the color draining from his face as he stared at the stable’s bulletin board.

“That would be inappropriate and illegal in most places,” Heather chimed.

“Oh shut up, you know that’s not what I meant,” he glanced over, lips twitching into a mean little grimace.

“So, what’s wrong,” the shorter woman asked, draping herself over her cousin’s shoulder, standing on her tiptoes.

“The roster is up. I’m riding 2nd.”

“Oh, is that bad? I mean isn’t going early and getting it out of the way better? Then you can relax and watch the rest?”

“Go first? Then I have to set the bar to the highest possible point. I can’t just make sure I out do the best in the round.”

“Ha, well that’s a little arrogant, don’t you think?”

Again, Sky gave his cousin an unamused look. “I didn’t mean it like that.”

“Sounded like that.”

“Whatever! Oh man… second?” Running his fingers up through his pale hair, Sky shook his head as he stared as his name, permanently plastered in the second position.

“Relax dude, you’ve been practicing for this. Besides, this is the first event. Just have fun, get used to it all. Maybe later you can introduce me to your dad, you said he’d be here right?”

“Yeah,” Sky nodded. “I was actually going to ask him if we could come visit before we have to head back to DREC. He seems really big on family-”

“Ironic.”

“Hey, he didn’t know, alright,” Sky snapped. Not that he could blame Heather. She was his cousin, but not by blood. It was difficult for her to understand why, now, his father had come into his life. Hell, even he was still a little shocked by it all, but he did know one thing. “He’s a good guy.”

“Alright. Sure,” she shrugged. “I wouldn’t mind getting to see more of the country before we leave.”

  Sky had surfed huge swells off the coast of California. He’d been sky jumping, luging, hang gliding. He was a black diamond snowboarder.

But this. Holy hell.

His hands held Marlo’s reins tight as the mare chapped at the bit, loose tail swishing in anticipated irritation. Heather must have tried braiding it twenty times, never to her liking in the end, and so Marlo donned a loose mane and tail. Of course that wasn’t really of any concern to Sky. Right now he was focusing on his breathing, keeping his concentration, running through the memorized course.

Marlo side stepped below him, but Sky kept a steady seat. They’d been preparing for this. It was impossible to argue that they may be the greenest pair in the lineup, but they were ready. He watched on as Julia Gibson closed her round on the big American Warmblood and the event staff waved him forward.

A smile crept onto his lips as his gaze caught sight of familiar faces in the crowd. Swallowing away the drying in his mouth, his nerves began to give way to ego.

Reaching down to pat the rusty colored mare on the neck, Sky took in a deep breath. “Well, here goes nothing.”
