how do you manage to avoid marks from the pliers on the piece?

it all because patterning. Some crafter apply "Tool Magic", a flexible rubber coating. This will help keep pliers from marring the wire.

Yes, if you have sensitive skin using coper it's evil! But I have one secret

If you have sensitive skin you should use titanium earrings. Gold and silver is often mixed with nickel to make them stiffer.
