Description I can't believe I actually did this, but I took up 's open challange/request to redraw his Maiko pic "Not This Time." For explanations of the premise of the pic, see the original --> [link]

Done entirely in 4B pencil (because I couldn't find my darker ones or charcoals for some reason) on computer paper. I was going to just do the rough sketch on the computer paper and then do the final in my sketchbook, but then this one of my roughs turned out so well, that I just worked with it and made it my final. I would have preferred the texture of the sketchbook paper, but oh well. The banner is one of the banners from Zuko's room on the ship in season one, because I thought the wall looked too bare. It took a lot longer than I had anticipated (most of the night), but that's ok. It was fun. And I wanted to submit something new before I go out of town for a week on Saturday.

I know Mai's head looks small. My perspective got skewed or something, since she's supposed to be behind him and off to the side. ...oddly, her head doesn't look so small in the original. Oh well. All in all, though, I think it turned out decently enough.

*sigh* It's still not my preferred ship, but oh well. I guess this is part of my way of learning to deal with it's impending canonization.

Avatar and it's characters belong to Mike and Brian. And I suppose the premise belongs to ~swan-swan . The pencil and paper were mine, though.

I like it! Though I prefer Zutara as well, this is still well done!

Wow. I love how Mai is lower than him --he's rising above her and the fire nation banner.

Well, turned out that it didn't happen like this.

Yet.

Well,t hat's why I did it in fanart form prior....and why you did such a great job with it.

Thanks. And once again, we'll have to wait and see what happens....and by wait, I mean wait until friday when YTV will probably show another episode early, and then we'll download it.

No, they probably won't.

DongbuFeng released the titles of 310, 311, and 312 at the same time. Meaning that the studios probably got those three episodes together. They JUST GOT the title for 313 and haven't gotten the title for 314 yet. So...they probably don't have a timeslot open yet.

It's the logical explanation. I could be proven wrong, but....

Which is good.

I'm doing "Western Air Temple" because it almost feels like it should be attached to the Day of Black Sun. While, at the same time, it doesn't....but...basically, because I don't fancy isolating myself for months.

Tempest-in-Blue In reply to Drisela [2007-09-26 05:25:11 +0000 UTC]

I suppose it is rather sad, but ~swan-swan wanted people to draw the scene, and I'm all about Zuko related angst, so I thought "why not?" I'm sorry if you think it's too sad though. I have happy Sukka and Zutara pics though, and a semi-humorous Maiko. Maybe those could cheer you up? And I promise my next pic will be much happier.

Drisela In reply to Tempest-in-Blue [2007-09-26 19:21:30 +0000 UTC]

Aw. It's OK sweetie. I'm fine.

[I'll let you in on a little secret. I want Zutara to happen ... so, some people are gonna get hurt. ie, Mai and Aang]

It's not too sad, as in I'm crying, but the mood and atmosphere is heavy and somber.
Which is perfect for the scene you are depicting. So good job.

And watch out for swan swan ... he can be very persuasive ...

Tempest-in-Blue In reply to Drisela [2007-09-26 21:54:55 +0000 UTC]

Yeay! Thank you.

And I have to admit, even though it could be a bit sad if Mai and Aang get hurt, part of me really wants to see those ships end really really badly. And by badly I mean hit with a torpedo from the SS Zutara, partially exploded, and then sinking like a flaming miniature Titanics. BWAHAHAHAHA!!

And yeah, Swan-swan is a tricky, sneaky, stubborn guy. One must be wary of him.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Drisela In reply to Tempest-in-Blue [2007-09-26 22:03:16 +0000 UTC]

I know it's sadistic ... but I sort of do too.

It's not that I want Mai or Aang to get hurt, or even all the pleasant Avatards who happen to like those ships ... I hope all those people get to life boats in time. We will gladly pick them up. Zutara will have a fleet of ships by then ...

... It's the people who called us crazy, insulted our intelligence, cruelly tried to negate what we had been feeling for a long time, the ones who would respond to any Zutaran comment on any post anywhere with snide and bitter remarks. And especially the ones who are so sure it will be their ship, you would think they had seen the entire series already! .... Yeah, I call them ANTI-ZUTARANS ... and they can sink to the ocean floor for all I care.

Yup, that about sums it up. It's that deep, burning desire to turn to all those who were so high and mighty and scoffed and were mean to us and say "Haha! I told you so! So there, take that! Nya nya nya! pbbbbbbbbbbtth! " lol

This is nice. The shading came out great.
Despite what other people might say...I could see Mai doing this. If she really was finally together with Zuko and he left, I think this would kind of be a breaking point for her.

Tempest-in-Blue In reply to lilfirebender [2007-08-11 04:26:58 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. I'm glad you think it turned out well.

I'm personally undecided as to whether or not I think this could happen, but at the moment I think that it could, and it could be extremely dramatic, because if she finally had something/someone to give a damn about after who knows how many years of apathy, and they were about to walk out on her I think she would find it very destressing, to say the least. It could be good.

Seems more like a fanfic type version, though.

Tempest-in-Blue In reply to lilfirebender [2007-08-12 13:33:05 +0000 UTC]

yeah. I don't really think it will happen either (by saying I thought it could happen earlier I meant I could possibly see Mai doing that, not that I thought she would. I should have been clearer, but having just compleated a 16 hour car trip, I was tired), and frankly, I do kinda hope it doesn't since I'm not really a Maiko shipper, but if something like it could happen, it does have potential to be kinda cool, at least.

You're right. That is unusually blunt for me. And in light of that, I have further comments:

The typical pattern of Maiko shipping has Mai wearing the pants in the relationship. Your drawing does not.

I see Mai trying desperately to keep Zuko near her. She is not at all charming about it, but she is trying, all the same. "Not this time. I'm coming with you", she says. This is an order disguised as a statement, and Zuko is not obeying. In your drawing he is leaving Mai, and he is also leaving the idea of a relationship with her. She is opposed to this, and tries to stop him, but she can't. In response to her statement "I'm coming with you", your drawing tells me that Zuko said, "Follow at a distance if you want. But I'm not looking back."

I've always said, "show me the artwork of a talented artist, and I'll show you his/her soul." Your soul does not want Maiko to happen, and your art reflects that. Evidently, you want Zuko and Mai to explore their past romantic feelings for each other-just enough to realize that they have grown apart. Then you want Zuko to leave and not look back. After all, he has to be free for Katara! If the plot of season three works out this way, I will be very pleased. I never had any great affection for Mai, anyway.

Tempest-in-Blue In reply to capricio [2007-08-11 04:19:03 +0000 UTC]

Hahahahahaha! You know me (and my art) too well, my friend. But then, what kind of surrogate elder brother would you be if you didn't? And thus I tip my hat to you for reading the picture (and my vision of Zuko in it) so very well.

And here I though I was hiding it semi well while trying to become somewhat less anti Maiko. Ah well. I am trying, and in shiping wars, nobody can really ask for more than that.

Aww, it looks really good! And...was I missing some obvious signs in canon? They only seemed to have maybe one moment? Or am I forgetting something?

That's what I thought too...but there's Maiko in the Season 3 trailor (which can be found at Avatarspirit.net), alas. Still not sure where it really came from, but oh well. I'm still holding out for Zutara though.

Tempest-in-Blue In reply to Lucca-Majere [2007-08-04 05:20:50 +0000 UTC]

Personally I think its mostly one-sided, Zuko just want's to justify his bad choice and to feel like somebody can still care about him, and it'll end very badly. That's my current theory, anyway.

See you in a week! though if you want to continue the conversation you can always call my cell (though you're always welcome to do that anyway). I'll send you a note w/ the number in case you don't have it anymore.
