Description
A gift for every Zutarian who believes in Aang's Oedipus Complex. Behold! The day it went into complete overdrive! YEAY!Yes, I know this is a different style than I usually do, and I can't draw Aang well and Katara's leg looks too short and Toph looks a bit freakish, but I did this one really fast so oh well. I still like it.
Yeah, so, basically I did this because the other day I talking to some people the other day in the Zutara chat room, and we got to talking abut Aang's little bit of an oedipus complex, which led to a very weird tangent involving Oedipus Rex, the details of which I don't quite remember, suffice to say that the idea for THIS was somehow born out of it.
Hmmmm...something just occured to me: does Aang's having gouged out his eyes count as mature content? I don't know.
Note: This deviation is intended for the amusement of Zutarians, and not as a way to rile up Kataangers. Kataangers aren't my intended audience.
_________
Avatar belongs to Mike, Bryan and Nick.
Oedipus Rex used to belong to Sophocles, but he's long dead, so I don't suppose it belongs to anybody anymore.
Aang's eye gouging belongs to me.

Yes. Well done.
I also think Katara mothers the whole team. sokka even said as much when he and Toph were talking during the Runaway that Katara's face is the face he sees when he thinks of his own mother.
So yeah, mother figure love. Not cool.

Nice work.
I'm not a KatAang fan, but even if I was one, I would agree that Aang has Oedipus Complex.

Wow...how many times can people argue about Oedipus before we all start going in circles? I love that someone is making fun of Freud even in a small way! I had to read some of his works for a class recently, and the only thing we really got out of it was to assume that Freud was crazy and to keep his opinions in the realm of the theoretical (where they have less of a chance of freaking someone out).

Poor thing. But that would be his reaction...
Too bad he cannot see the brilliance of Zutara make outs.

...Did you just block my comments? Seriously, why did you do that? I wasn't whining; just stating my opinion. Now if you can't handle when I don't know why you weren't mature enough too just say, "Lets agree too disagree!" or "Were both in fandom lets not hate each other!" but no, you had too block my opinion. And of course I have a feeling that you will just block this one too.
I really am disappointed right now. For every nice Zutarian I talk too theyβre ten more like you who yell at other shippers and bash anything that comes in the way of Zutara. And by the way; I ship Kataang and Zukaang. Just saying! ;D

Dear 01020304,
I, too, like you, am a shipper of Kataang, and I have been for a very long time. I have discussed this topic with Tempest-in-Blue on numerous occasions, and sometimes this has resulted in an argument. On absolutely all of these occasions, she has resolved the dispute with me in a perfectly civilized manner, and there has never been any hostility between us as a result.
So you may imagine my surprise when I see I see that you have posted the following:
"For every nice Zutarian I talk too theyβre ten more like you who yell at other shippers and bash anything that comes in the way of Zutara. "
Tempest -in Blue never changes her mind without good reason, it is true, but it would be a gross overstatement to accuse her of this kind of hatemongering, evil propaganda.
There is another aspect of your post which concerns me. You criticize Tempest-in-Blue for not asking you to simply "agree to disagree", and of not playing the peacemaker by by saying, "Were both in fandom lets not hate each other!" It occurs to me that, in any argument of any kind, such statements as "agree to disagree" should first be mentioned in the context of asking the other person for peace, and not in the context of criticising the other person for not making peace.
Another thing concerns me. You expressed great frustration with Tempest in Blue for blocking several of your posts. I do not claim to know what you have written, nor do I know whether or not I myself would have blocked you. But I do know this: According to the ideals upon which Deviantart is based, Tempest-in-Blue is the complete master over this area of the website, and as such she has full authority and right to block anyone she wants, at anytime she wants, for any reason she wants, regardless of what anybody thinks about it. If she wants to completely dedicate her area of the site towards lambasting Kataangers, using frequent profanity and other harsh language (as it is clear that she has not), it is her absolute right to do so. And if you or I or anyone else does not like what she has done with that which is her own, we have a perfect and sovereign right not to look at it. It concerns me that you seem to be transgressing Tempest-in-Blue's rights in this regard, through an unnecessary and unproductive harassment of her.
I cannot claim the right or the power to force you to leave Tempest-in-Blue alone. But I can ask you to consider this question: What do you gain from arguing with this woman? Anything? Anything at all? What if you were to destroy her logic, break down all her barriers, and prove her to be completely non compus mentis? You would feel fine. But she would feel terrible. You would have completely ruined another person's day by proving yourself right about a future contingency of the relationships between cartoon characters. I would find such a thing to be petty, unnecessarily hurtful and completely inexcusable.
For all of the above reasons, I feel it necessary to respectfully request that you cease all contact with my friend, Tempest-in-Blue. You can can gain no lasting pleasure by continuing from here, and you will demonstrate honor in your character by withdrawing now. She has not won, and you have not won, but perhaps by utilizing a separation you may yet win peace.

...I've been waiting too yell at a Kataang fan, for a looong time. You see many people assume that I who we shall call the alpha and the omega; only yell at Zutarians. That is in fact true. But certain Kataang fans bother me more. It's true, they bother me. Now I myself am a Kataang fan so what does that make me a Traitor?
First off I am not a peace maker! I enjoy ship wars! Believe it or not I think that this stuff is how you say...fun. It is good old fashion fun with human interaction. And I did not use frequent profanity, I never raised my voice. And according too Tempest-In-Blue she blocked them too not encourage ship wars. And I greatly clap my hands over my keyboard for that. I only asked her from the beginning why does everybody say Kataang is Oedipus complex. And a question for you Capricio, why do you think Kataang is not Oedipus complex. Because when I walk into fandom I wear a blindfold and can only hear the shouts, the accusations of what my ships really are.
And by no means I wish too ruin Tempest-In-Blue's day. Maybe another Zutarian, but not her. You see I don't go after people who ship Zutara, I go after Zutarians! Many Zutarians bother me, and I told you why. They hate Aang and go too great lengths too find evidence for Zutara. They have tried too change my opinion, and they try to pull out evidence where Toph will die, because Aang loves her, so that Zutara can happen. And I did not mean too pick on your friend. I meant too ask a simple question which maybe sparked some augment in me.
And once again I do a gain pleasure from being right. I enjoy being right. I think people are unhealthy too not think so. Of course this is my opinion but you can keep argue with me. But it won't get you anywhere. And with that good man I bid you goodbye, and so long.

Dear 01020304,
As I read your post, I saw many different statements that you made, and imagined many different ways that I might respond. But just as I was about to respond, I read this:
And with that good man I bid you goodbye, and so long.
By saying this, you are doing exactly what I asked you to do, after speaking your peace one last time. I cannot fault you for that. How could I ask more from you?
But before we end this conversation, I should have the courtesy to answer your question. Why do I think Kataang is not representative of an Oepdipus complex? Because although it is similar in some respects (Katara does show motherly love to Aang; Aang does have romantic attraction to Katara), it is dissimilar in other respects. Most notably, I can decipher no father figure to whom Aang is hostile. In short, I can see how Kataang meets some of the parameters for an Oedipus complex, but not all of them.
Which raises the obvious next question: Why do Zutarans see an Oedipus complex here? This question can be answered in the form of another question: Why do Panda Bears eat Bamboo? The answer is: Because they're Panda Bears, and Panda Bears enjoy the taste of Bamboo. We may not be able to enjoy Bamboo in the same way that they can, but we don't have to. We can eat Doritos, instead. To each his own.
In the same way, Zutarans have their ship and we have ours, and as long as we hold to our ship we will never be able to totally understand the logic of their arguments. But if we don't understand their thought processes, that's okay. They probably don't understand ours, either. Each of us can enjoy our own ships, with their own attendant joys. Diversity living together in harmony and balance: It's what Avatar is all about.
I have very limited contact with Zutarans, and thus have little insight into their thinking as a group. But in my opinion, Tempest-in-Blue does not see Kataang as an exact parallel with either Freudian Oedipal theory or the ancient Oedipus myth. I think she just had some extra time, saw one or two similarities, and drew a piece of art around that theme, just for the fun of it.
In my last post, I wrote: "you will demonstrate honor in your character by withdrawing now." Apparently, this is exactly what you have done, and I commend you. To be honest, I had expected a heated argument from you, and was bracing myself for the worst. But you certainly surprised me.
Your last paragraph was right, you know? Arguments never get any of us anywhere. They only sow discord and further entrench our opponents. Thank you for that reminder.
And with that, good man, I bid you goodbye and hope that you enjoy the remainder of the last season of this wonderful show.
