Description Holy crap, Artrix submits something that does not start with "Artrix's take on"!

But the situation is somewhat more complicated than that. It's true that Artrix's take on Danny Phantom is similar to this one, in that I molded the actual series into something dark, so technically, it's still a "take on".

Except that the Danny Phantom piece, or rather, it's back story, never took off. I'm glad it did not, because it was the lamest piece of shit back story I've ever written.

Admitted, Inspector Iroh pretty much started the same way. It started with a brain fart of combining Avatar with Baantjer, a Dutch television series about two murder investigators in Amsterdam city. The initial sketch that started it can be found here . Notice that the filename is still "baantjer".

Instead of disappearing into obscurity, it took off and developed into something that many Avatar fans can enjoy. I was surprised that people were actually drawing fan art of what is essentially fan art, and things started to heat up when Rufftoon herself decided to post her take on the franchise. Seeing as Rufftoon actually worked on Avatar, it meant that Inspector Iroh was now a fraction of a percent canon. Okay, so maybe not, but it's an amusing thought.

Instead of keeping it all to myself, I decided to pull a Linux and made the franchise "open source" by creating an round robin comic that runs to this day. Simply visit ~InspectorIroh to see the result thus far.

Now, after a previous, but failed attempt, I created a movie-type poster for the franchise. I wanted to create something that would set the tone of this particular universe, and to show some of it's features, like the upgrading air bisons and the Kyoshi bikes.

This isn't necessarily something that I spend a lot of time on. I wanted to a rougher look and experiment with pencil-inking and rough, grainy effects. This is also the first time I take full advantage of my new line-art-to-transparent technique, which combines the freedom of paper and the flexibility of computer-drawn lines.

That's enough image description. Enabling advanced criticism for obvious reasons. Hope you guys enjoy :]

He was an awesome character only second to his voice actor Mako Iwamatsu R.I.P. whos great works were in MASH, Pearl Harbor, Samurai Jack, and Avatar LAB (to name a few).

can't wait till korra starts up and your gallery comes alive with avatar fan art... as far as a critique... there isn't much to say. i suppose its hard to tell whether or not there is a kyoshi warrior on the motorcycle unless you download the image for a good look. otherwise, its your stylistic take and i enjoy it

If I ever had the opportunity to actually make this into a movie, with the catch that Shyamalan would write the script, I would refuse to do it.

Dunno if this bit of fan art inspired the direction "Legend of Korra" is taking (steampunk urban setting), but if it is, humanity is in your debt.

While I know from a very reliable source that Mike and Brian know about Inspector Iroh, I don't think this is what lead them to the concept for The Legend of Korra. The series looks more like a natural evolution based on the tech they had in the former series.

However, that doesn't neglect that the new series is probably going to be highly enjoyable.

Very nice poster....I really like it! It's got kind of a Cowboy Bebop/Blade Runner field...and Zuko looks a lot like Spike with the cigarette and the shaggy hair. Great job...I love the motorcycle chase in the bottom and the shadowy bad guys. Very intense work...and I have been reading the series...it's a lot of fun. I'm actually thinking about joining the fun Great job!

Thanks for what I see as positive feedback.

And of course you're welcome to join. Instructions to do so can be found in the only journal post at ~InspectorIroh , and since there are about 10 people waiting for their turn, you can safely sign up and practice on the characters before it's your turn.

Wow, just read the comic. Freaking loving it. Is there maybe a scenario for the next 2 or 3 pages? Maybe I could take a crack on them, if it's open for public.

TheArtrix In reply to Ritualist [2008-07-11 18:52:40 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for taking a little while to respond. It's actually thanks to v6 that I saw that I had queued your message.

Yes, the comic is pretty much open and of course you can join, but there's actually a system behind it. I don't know if you have an account at avatarspirit.net, but on it's forums, we have a big Inspector Iroh thread that explains everything. We currently have people lined up to page 31, but there's always the possibility that someone drops out.

Non-members can join the fun as well, so if you'd like to contribute a page, I can put you on the list.

Ritualist In reply to TheArtrix [2008-07-12 07:49:51 +0000 UTC]

Not a problem.

I'll sing up for it, and I would like to add a few pages to the comic. Just put me on the list for page 31 now and note me with the script.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheArtrix In reply to Ritualist [2008-07-27 09:26:13 +0000 UTC]

Technically, the artist for the page(s) is also responsible for writing the page, but it's also possible to team up with an writer. And who knows, perhaps I'd like to write a page for a change.

Anyways, you're signed up for page 31 (or 32, anyway, something along those lines). Once it's your turn, or when a page is available, I'll contact you.

Once again, thanks for joining the project :]

Oh wow Artrix! This is amazing, I love the mood of the piece and the characters are really well designed. Zuko gives me a Spike from Cowboy Bebop vibe. I'm loving the kyoshi motorcycle, its amazing! And I thought it was really interesting that Azula's mouth is covered since that seems to be her most powerful tool in this series.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheArtrix In reply to shadowcat20x [2008-03-17 21:42:32 +0000 UTC]

Azula's mouth is covered because it would otherwise become kinda of cluttered in that area (with Iroh's glasses and hat and all), but that's actually a pretty clever way to look at it.

Hmm, didn't think of Zuko looking like Spike Spiegel, I always found Jet more suited for that title.

This is amazing! I really am in awe from how amazing this is. The cigarette smoke is well done, and I love how it continues to snake upwards. The only thing I can see is the design for the bridge. It looks cool, but the whole crooked aspect looks a little off. Plus, I love the little Ghi sign bending with the building.

TheraHedwig [2008-02-10 22:19:51 +0000 UTC]

Baantjer and Avatar, oh god, I can see Iroh going 'Inspector Iroh, that's with I, R, O, H.' already.

The bottom of the picture is great, the bike of the kyoshi warrior wonderful, but I feel like the top is a bit sloppy here. I adore the detail in the city.

Good luck, I hope you will be able to take this project far and even finish it!

Seeing as the official topic at ASN has just been stickyfied (which requires a thread to be quite exceptional), I'm sure we have not yet seen the end in sight.

Looks like a modernist approach using 80's style anime and western motifs.

I see you used something similar to the Serial Experiments Lain logo.

The only thing I will complain about is that some of the original lines look really, really gray instead of black. The black background makes the lines appear much lighter than they should.

Still cool.

TheArtrix In reply to Slarty [2008-02-07 23:34:22 +0000 UTC]

Hey, haven't seen you in quite some time. Thanks for dropping by.

I do realize that the coloring of the line art is very sloppy. I guess that sloppy line coloring does not go unnoticed. I'm definitely going to fix some of those lines, especially around Iroh's beard. I actually like the effect on the buildings all the way in the back.

Thanks for your very insightful comment :]

Slarty In reply to TheArtrix [2008-02-12 03:07:42 +0000 UTC]

The line art doesn't totally destroy the entire pice, it was the first thing I noticed. Though an artist's job is never done until they are personally satisfied!

PS You come up in conversations once in a while as "My friend from the Netherlands." I've since lost your contact information. I'd love to send you some snail mail. Do you still live in Schrjif? (I definitely misspelled that)
