Description
My take on the Elder Things from Lovecraft's story "At the Mountain of Madness". This species was a lot harder to draw because it's so... freaky looking. At the same time it was a lot of fun to draw too!Related content

What's to say about this? It's very freaky. H.P. Lovecraft came up with a world full of unearthly monsters that were always hard to imagine or describe.
This is a very original piece, not many artists will tackle Lovecraft's concept characters. The world of these demons is a multi-faceted one, even if the monsters are derivatives of such earthly creatures as octopi and squid.
This has a classic illustrative look that makes me think of pictures shared in novels, fantasy and horror alike. It might give one nightmares to think about or to look at. As with many of these powerful beasts, they're open to interpretation and sometimes the phrase "Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder" really applies. This is nicely done!

You're welcome.
Have you ever heard of a book made back in 1985 or so called "Deities and Demigods"? It was made by TSR for Dungeons and Dragons Roleplaying game. The 1st version of the book had an entire mythos on the legend of Cthulhu

I know right? I had to read that description of the Elder Things over and over again to visualize it, then try to make it look like a cool creature. Thanks!

I have to admit out of Lovecraft's many races the Star-Headed Elder Things were the ones I had the most trouble picturing.
Your version really works for me though. Will think of this fellow when I re-read At The Mountains Of Madness

Despite the fairly detailed description Lovecraft gives of these creatures, it's amazing how so many drawings of Elder Things differ from each other, yet still exude abject horror. This one seems to have one of the more sensible depictions of the wings. I find that part the hardest to imagine.

The wings were difficult to make out. Thanks!

When you have finished all the lesser creatures of the Cthulhu Mythos, will you do the bestiary of Lovecraft's Dream Cycle. I would love to see your adaptation of the great mountainous giants that squat on the mountains beyond Inganok, with their mitred two-headed dog faces, and guard Kadath of the cold waste.

Love it! I really like the detail you put into the tentacles. The wings look absolutely fantastic, and it all looks so organic!
Reminds me of the work of Ron Spencer!

Very well done! This is a better image than what I came upth! XD It reminds me a little of a beholder from D&D, but that's because of the eyes. Otherwise, I'e never seen something like this!

The Elder Things are a different race created by Lovecraft, they are not Cthulhu. They're the first aliens to come to earth and are highly intelligent. They are vegetable/fungus like creatures that made huge cities on earth way before any creature existed on it. Though later on they have gone to war with Cthulhu's star spawn and the Mi-go's. These wars plus the ice age led to their downfall. Read "In the Mountain of Madness" by Lovecraft, it tells the whole story about these creatures.
