Description
July '09 edit:If you like this tutorial; please, feel free to check out my manga:
- The Enemy (Submitted June '06 to January '07)
- Angel Fallen (Cont'd July '08 to December '08)
- Never-Ending Encore (Submitted May '09 to present)
I wrote this tutorial a few years back and made an edit to this comment since it's still getting so many hits. This was requested by one or two people, so yeah, this is a tutorial on how to CG your manga for anyone who wants to know how I did my manga.
I would direct this to beginners since I had only submitted about 2 or 3 pages at the time of making this tutorial and I honestly think I no longer agree with some of the advice I gave. I just haven't read through it again to check. So sorry if it's not completely up to date.

towards you not the tutorial, i mean too much paneling is the killing of a manga, comic book etc. Like I am trying to encourage you to get better because, you do not want to end up like that battlefield movie that was based on the book of the same name. Organized paneling is good because the action is not cluttered. Take a page from the Watchmen, and look at their paneling.
I'm just saying that you should take it easy at the paneling.
Your tutorial is great, just easy on the paneling, because it confuses me when i read that stuff and I do not know which to follow first.

Wait, sorry. Disregard the other comment. When you said 'towards me' I just assumed you meant my manga in general and not just the page that's in this tutorial.
In my defence, I haven't read through this tutorial for a long long time.

Thanks for this! I'm working on a Manga, so this will be helpful ...but I do have a question/misunderstanding:
I don't have Photoshop, but I do have Gimp and I just don't understand how to use the Layers. What's the difference between using layers & not using layers?

SilentArtisan207 In reply to joyful-melody [2009-05-28 06:10:00 +0000 UTC]
Using layers basically means (I'm trying to make this in the easiest way possible) say your using multiple sheets of paper and the first drawing is your background and has your sketchy line art, the second over that has your inking and one over that has colors and so on. Layers allow you to work over things with out messing up some of the other stuff. Hope this helps at all. I'm also an aspiring manga artist and am working on a manga myself. So care to be friends? I don't have very many deviations up but I will work on getting some up.

Don't mention it^^ I'm new to it too. The only reason I know is because my friends know all about photoshop and stuff. But anyway what type of manga genre do you like?

I've never heard of those before. I'll probably check those out, like I do when I hear about a new manga/anime. Yup, I'm a manga/anime nerd.

Same here. Ecchi is kinda like panty shots occasionaly and stuff like that. But the ones I'm into are because I"m into the story line. Not the whole pervy thing.

Yeah, I don't like those perv animes/mangas. They're just so degrading/unrespectful in my opinion.

I mean I'm okay with the ones where they only do that to the person they love like a boyfriend girlfriend relationship but if it's like the whole sluty thing then I don't like it. So your a girl I'm guessing? Don't be offended if I'm wrong please okay?

I hate sluty things too, but yeah if they love each other in the storyline that's acceptable.
Yep, I'm a girl.
No, I'm not offended.

WOW!!! You need to get one. It is a VERY useful tool to use. Using a mouse is like trying to paint a picture with a soap bar, so I suggest getting one.

lol
I draw everything out on paper first, then I color it with MS Paint or Gimp. But lately I've been using Sharpie markers and colored pencils to color drawings.

My friend ~bEN-mOHAWK2011 told me before that if I take Photography online college classes (something our school offers) they might get photoshop for people to use, so hopefully that'll happen.
I'd like to get photoshop for photography and artwork.
Thank you!

I was thinking about getting one that wasn't too expensive a while ago, as long as it's not $200 dollars or something. I'll look into getting a tablet.

Well, my mom does want me to get a job at our town's local mini-mart...so I'll probably have to start saving once I get a job.
I'm not being cheap or anything, I don't like spending $200 dollars or above on things.

I'm pretty sure you can use layers in GIMP (from what I've heard) and if you can, I highly recommend that you do. If you can't, then I don't think my tutorial would be very useful to you. Working in layers is like working with your line art painted on cel sheets like in animation and then colouring on other sheets which would go below it (again like in animation). The advantage is you can make changes to these other layers without interfering with your line art or colouring under your line art any way you want like the example that I made in the tutorial.
Of course, if you are absolutely bent on avoiding layers, it's entirely possible to work without them. It's just more difficult and requires more patience. In my manga, I actually purposely left white outlines around my characters when they were on black backgrounds. For a style like that for example, you wouldn't need layers.
Hope that helps. <3
