Description July '09 edit:

If you like this tutorial; please, feel free to check out my manga:

- The Enemy (Submitted June '06 to January '07)
- Angel Fallen (Cont'd July '08 to December '08)
- Never-Ending Encore (Submitted May '09 to present)

I wrote this tutorial a few years back and made an edit to this comment since it's still getting so many hits. This was requested by one or two people, so yeah, this is a tutorial on how to CG your manga for anyone who wants to know how I did my manga.

I would direct this to beginners since I had only submitted about 2 or 3 pages at the time of making this tutorial and I honestly think I no longer agree with some of the advice I gave. I just haven't read through it again to check. So sorry if it's not completely up to date.

So there is a way to turn your pencil lines into inked lines in potoshop, without losing the details?
P.S I have posted my first manga page on DA, I am going to post it on tokyopop latter so can you take a look and tell me if it looks good?...Thank you.

Yeah, if you play around with the levels it's entirely possible to keep it the same but darker.

This should be pretty nifty. I'm a little confused on the pattern parts though. Do you mean download a brush that is a pattern and use that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheEclipse In reply to KouNaraishi [2009-02-13 08:24:22 +0000 UTC]

You can make your own if you know how or download them from people who put them up for public use. They're usually just in the form of images.

KouNaraishi In reply to TheEclipse [2009-02-13 08:45:35 +0000 UTC]

How would I make my own? Or what would I search for to find those?

"Screentones" possibly with a space in between. I think there are some on this site, too.

Nice tutorial. I'm trying to do some manga too so this might come in very handy. I see some of the manga you've already made and it looks like the real thing. Good job!

will this work with GIMP?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheEclipse In reply to originalkiba [2009-01-16 01:35:54 +0000 UTC]

I've never used GIMP before, but from what I hear, it's quite similar to Photoshop, so you should be fine. The terms and layout for options and whatnot might be a little different, but the technique might be quite similar.

how do you separate the white background from the lineart? because when I open the pic the background is the lineart

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheEclipse In reply to animemangafreak1234 [2008-10-13 19:56:08 +0000 UTC]

You have to put the lineart on a new layer to delete the white areas first.

TheEclipse In reply to animemangafreak1234 [2008-10-05 01:16:39 +0000 UTC]

You mean your inked lineart?

It's in the tutorial somewhere. Look for the part that talks about levels. It should explain how to make your lineart darker/lighter.

animemangafreak1234 In reply to TheEclipse [2008-10-05 01:19:09 +0000 UTC]

really I've tried but it's not working....HELP!!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheEclipse In reply to animemangafreak1234 [2008-10-05 01:26:13 +0000 UTC]

Have you opened up the box to adjust the levels? If you move the tab on left towards the right, your lineart should get darker. If that's not working, then check to make sure you're editing the correct layer.

You are using photoshop, right?

TheEclipse In reply to animemangafreak1234 [2008-10-03 10:03:32 +0000 UTC]

You could, but pen comes out a lot crispier.

Haha, well, everyone says that. In fact, I'm not that good either. When I make a mistake, or if my lines come out wrinkly, then I just go over the same line again and fix it in photoshop with the polygon lasso.

You can normally make them or just find scans on google.
