Description Aproximately 16 x 38
Gouache paints with coloured pencil on coloured matte board
The test along the "spine" was added after via PhotoShop, while the text on the cover is part of the painting.

*** This is technically a re-posting of this illustration. I plan to do so with all my Potter art work building up (hopefully) to having some new stuff to share there after. So if you feel like you've seen this before - you probably have. On the upside, I'm sharing it at a larger resolution and without the DeviantArt watermark on it now ***

This is my cover illustration to "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets". It's the full dust jacket illustration - Front and back cover, spine and inside flaps. I was happy to have retained much of the qualities that the cover illustration I did for the first book, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone". Hopefully I'll be able to do so with all of the stories and create a nice cohesive design-theme.

Fun Fact: The painting is actually a re-do. The original version used a lot of the same character designs, and general setup - but it I did it on a kaki or tan colour matte board - which I did NOT care for. Obviously, because I went back a re-did the entire illustration, and am SO happy I did. Honestly, I'm not sure what I was thinking in choosing that colour to begin with. I like this version much MUCH better. The only major element the other version had that this doesn't was - the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets with two giant yellow eyes peering out of the darkness inside and Tom Riddle standing just bellow - but I took it out because I felt it gave away too much for being part of a cover illustration. I also took out the Dursleys - which felt a little harsh, but there just wasn't space for them as I reconfigured everything else.

I can already tell this series of illustrations is gonna be fun.
My favorite book of the series.

That's so interesting, because it's sort of my least favorite. I hate using that term; "least favorite". It implies I didn't like it. I did, I like the entire series. My least favorite Harry Potter book is still better than any other none Potter book. But if I had to rank it, Chamber of Secrets is probably #7 for me. I will say, Half-Blood Prince made it so much more relevant to the series as a whole, which I loved.

What makes Chamber of Secrets your least favorite
out of the series?

Again, it's not that I didn't like it. There's some great fun in Chamber of Secrets for sure. It's more that I liked the other books better is all. Until Half-Blood Prince, it just felt like a random adventure that didn't quite fit in the series as a whole.

Hm, I never thought of it that way.
It always felt like we were exploring
Hogwarts a little more than last time.
Also, like what you said about the Half Blood Prince,
establishing some important details about the world
and the antagonist.

And they were exploring Hogwarts more - you're absolutely correct. They had to, we as an audience were still learning about Hogwarts. But I guess (at the time) it felt like a re-hash of the first story. Like you said, we were exploring more of Hogwarts though Harry, so it was still that sense of the beginning and at the end it was another version of Voldemort "come back" just like the book before. I think that might be one of the reasons I liked Prisoner of Azkaban - I half expected to see Voldemort show up at the end, but he didn't.

Again, I just want to point out, just because it's my least favorite of the series, it's still in my top 7 books of all time

You've got some good points there.
Sorry for the late reply.
At first, I thought the synopsis
was something more of the books
trying to go with a type of formula.
How that can go depends on the
writer and I can safely say that I
believe Rowling did formulas well
for the most part. Which was why
I've been partially hesitant of books 4
and 5 simply because they were doing some
different stuff and I was used to what 1 and 2
were doing. It might be for the best that she
broke away from a formula since it's not
just Hogwarts that the audience would
be curious about and with a threat as big
as Voldemort, there will be other places
and lore that'll be influenced by his vices.

I almost wish I had put more spiders in it. It didn't want to drown it in them... but it could have used a few more. But thank you very much for all your kind words and compliments on the painting. I'm happy with it and it makes me extra happy when I know people are enjoying it

I'm so glad that you're uploading Chamber of Secrets. I'm starting my re-read today. I love the way everything is so balanced in this book cover. I can tell exactly where the flaps are and I adore that Gilderoy is the face on the spine. I think that's a great theme to stick to since I saw Quirrell and Lupin on the Book 1 and Book 3 spines. Nice touch of using pipes to spell out the title and your use of the spiderweb is clever. Myrtle is adorable! I look forward to seeing more of her later on. Nice touch of having Ginny clutching onto the cursed diary.

There was never a doubt that I'd be posting Chamber of Secrets - so never fear that

Thank you for the compliments on the cover - I'm so happy you can see it's layout built into the piece; where the flaps are and spine and all that. I wanted it to work as a whole - in the way it's displayed here - but also as those individual parts when bent and folding on a physical book.

The Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher on the spine was the plan from day one... and I'm very excited about. I can't wait to have all the books done and see them lined up on the shelf. And maybe by then, I'll find a way to get permission to sell them so others can too!

I must admit I liked the kaki one too. This color looks great too, but I regret you hate the kaki one so much since that means it won't be used in any other book either.

TheGeekCanPaint In reply to Spirit--Of-Adventure [2017-11-28 01:27:59 +0000 UTC]

The kaki just didn't work. I mean I did it, and for a while just after, that was going to be it. But every time I looked at it, it just didn't fit in with the look I was going for in the series. So alas, it had to go. But I really appreciate that you liked it - it shows it wasn't as bad as I was feeling toward it. Don't get me wrong, it still had to go, and I like the new one better, but now I can look back on it a little fonder

Since the Dursleys aren't the main part of the story, it's no problem that you took them out ...

At first I thought Hermoine changed her hair colour, but it was just Ginny ... Hermnoine almost disappears, because of the dark colours.

Watch out for the Symbiote goo!

TheGeekCanPaint In reply to Hand-Sam-Art [2017-11-28 01:24:31 +0000 UTC]

I don't feel too bad about pulling the Dursleysout... if I had, I would have found a way to make them fit. It just felt odd taking them out so early in the series.

Oh goodness, if Hermione had the colour hair Ginny has, she would be unmissable - LOL That said, Hermione is in the background and even get's lost with reason - this just isn't her story. Sure she's an important part (hence being on the front cover) but she spends a good portion of the finally petrified.

Hehehe - symbiote goo... maybe Peter Parker was accepted to Hogwarts!

I love the logo: the snakes and pipes, the cobweb, the 'The Chamber of Secrets' actually being the bloody message itself, really ingenious!
Also love the little cornish pixies in the corner, the fact that everyone seems to be forming out of ink, the trail of Fawkes's feathers and the spiders all over the place! Lots of great little details.

I was particularly please with the way the logo worked out all around. I'm glad you enjoy it too But that's not to say I don't appreciate all the kind words about the other stuff - truly, thank you for all the compliments, they are very much appreciated
