Gouache paints with coloured pencil on watercolour paper

*** This is technically a re-posting of this illustration. I plan to do so with all of my Potter art work building up (hopefully) to having some new stuff to share there after. So if you feel like you've seen this before - you probably have. On the upside, I'm sharing it at a larger resolution and without the DeviantArt watermark on it now ***

So, as I was finishing the last illustrations to book 1 of Harry Potter, I was looking back and feeling one scene got particularly jipped. And it was odd to say considering how many vignette drawings I did for it, but I felt Diagon Alley didn't get it's full due. The scene I chose to paint was when Harry gets his wand, and I still stand by that decision. If I could only do one painting, that's the one I would choose. But I didn't have to only do one, but since I feel a strange need to create a guideline for what I do, and by doing a second painting for one of the chapters, I'd have to do something to set it apart and not feel like I'd need to do multiples for other chapters. So I did a double sized illustration. I want to say something went wrong with my measurements, and it didn't come out to be EXACTLY double sized, but I'm alright with is. And considering I have an easier time with people, animals and other organic things than I do with structures and vehicles... I actually had doing those... I think this scene turned out pretty nice. It was certainly one of the more ambitious paintings I'd ever done at that time.

I could look at this forever, there are so many details! I really like the houses, they remind me of some villages I have seen here in Germany. It really has a interesting, almost exiting and busy feeling to it. Fitting for this place
I also love the detail in the background with Big Ben!
and I especially love the old lady who already has the coin at hand to pay the owl. Also the wizard on the roof is somehow very funny to me XD

Oh, thank you! I struggled with making this painting a lot. Buildings and structural art is not my strong suit. I tried to fill it with as much as I could, without being "distracting". I'm so happy you're enjoying the painting

I totally can understand that. Organic things are so much easier (and funnier to paint). But no one would have thought you have a problem with this peace because the houses looking all very great and detailed! I am by far not a good artist or anything like that but I couldn´t spot anything wrong and the houses and streets looking realistic to me
I think it´s always very difficult to find a good balance between "a lot to see"/details and simply "too much". But (in my opinion) you managed that with this picture very well.

I'm not one to jump at doing city scenes - I struggle with them. But when I got to do them, I like trying to fill them with as many "Where's Waldo" type treats as I can. I'm so happy you're enjoying them - cause that's what this painting was all about

I understand... it's really not the easiest for me either...

I love those treats and Easter Eggs, they give so much extra fun to the pictures!!

This is very cool. I love the details and the easter eggs such as Newt's latest edition of Fantastic Beasts being out and the Wicked Witch of the West mingling with her kind.

What I love about this picture is that your attention is brought to the witch on the right who is getting out her coins for the owl delivery of the Daily Prophet, but then is drawn to the bustling street below.  So much activity!  Then your vision focuses on all of the little details--the cat on the roof, Harry and Hagrid (almost unseen) emerging through the arch entrance, and Muggle London which seems far in the distance.  This painting is a joy!

Thank you so much! I struggle so much with structural drawing, so this illustration was a big undertaking. I'm so glad you're enjoying it!!!

Oh my gosh how long does it take you to create your paintings since they are so detailed?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheGeekCanPaint In reply to Fangirlingasalways [2017-07-22 14:51:38 +0000 UTC]

It depends on the painting really. Some of them happen quicker than expected, while others take me longer. And I have a hard time keeping track of exactly how long they take since I can only work on them in the in-between times that I get to work on them. This painting you're commenting on took me a long time because it's larger than I normally work and it's a city scape, which I struggle with a lot... I have an easier time with people and organic things.

If the publishers ever said "You can only have one painting for Chapter 2", you could use the Ollivanders/Wand one as a Frontispiece.
That way you could have both paintings included, but in appropriate spots without being cramped!
