Description
16 x 22Gouache paints with coloured pencil on watercolour paper
*** This is technically a re-posting of this illustration. I plan to do so with all of my Potter art work, building up to (hopefully) having some new stuff to share there after. So if you feel like you've seen this before - you probably have. On the upside, I'm sharing it at a larger resolution and without the DeviantArt watermark on it now ***
The last of the paintings for "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone"! It was a huge deal finishing this painting. I touched on this a bit in my talk about the vignette drawings, but I did all those first, so I could be finishing it all with a paintings. And as I said there, I thought this chapter could have been split into 2, because there is another scene I'd really wanted to paint - but read the vignette breakdown for Chapter 17 if you want to know more about that.
This painting I fought with for a long time before it was finished. There was so much I wanted to show, I wasn't sure I'd be able to fit it all in... but I think it worked out pretty well. The fact that one of the elements was a mirror gave me the reflection to work with so I could show 2 sides of the room.
The main scene though was Harry fighting with Quirrell. I wanted so badly to give a solid sense of action and movement. It wasn't perfect, but I like how it turned out.
It was really exciting to get to give a hint at Voldemort so early in the series. It's too bad I won't get to do any more with him until book 4... but I'm working on book 3 now... so maybe it's not SO far off
Oddly enough, Dumbledore - even though he's supposed to be a secondary element - came off smashingly well if you ask me. I really had fun painting the black flames, being both black, but also producing lite since they're, well, flames! But also Dumbledore himself - who's turned out to be one the characters that comes really easily to me to draw. I liked his body gesture and his placement on the page worked out just about perfect - not pulling focus from what was important while also making an entrance.
It was a decent piece to end the first book with!

I'm confused. Where does the mirror start and where does it end?
I can't help but feel like we're looking at two Quirrels instead of one
and a reflection.

The "actual" Quirrell and Harry are the one's closest to us in the front. Their reflections are (because the mirror is) just behind them, which is reflecting the opposite side of the room where we see Dumbledore coming to the rescue - just before Harry is about to pass-out.

I love the way that the mirror allowed us to get so much more content in such a small frame. You definitely accomplished your goal of wanting to represent action and movement. You even remembered to include some of the rope on the floor! Thanks for that detail.
I'm going to be starting Book 2 soon and I'll be visiting your site to see your vignettes and paintings as I read the chapters. Will you be uploading them after the Oz series that's currently ongoing?

You noticed the rope... it's always nice when people notice all the little extra details I try to include,,, and you certainly notice them
Oh yes, I will definitely be uploading the art for book 2 here. I just figured I'd do Oz first because there isn't as much and I wanted to "get it out of the way". I actually just finished posting everything I had for Oz, so Harry book 2 is next... and after I go through replying to comments now I'll be posting the first illustration from it.

It was funny, Dumbledore being in it was almost an after thought. When I started it, the only thing I was focused on was Harry fighting with Quirrell - but then it hit me at the height of the fight, Dumbledore would have arrived.
I'm glad you like it

In movies mirrors are impossible to work with so you have to avoid them, or else they and what you're doing appear in the film ... but in illustrations, they allow to go right in front of the glass - even between them and a character! - without the reflection interferring with the work, something I learned redoing my "Return to Oz" comic.
If there flames were black, I've forgotten! Another reason to reread the book ...

Yes, reflections have been very useful in my illustrations, and I look forward to using more down the line. t's always nice when we can make use of something that could be a hinderance in another medium!
Yup, the flames are black - any reason to re-read the books

These paintings are usually gorgeous, but something about this one is really resonating with me, I LOVE it!
Can't wait to see some stuff from Chamber of Secrets, that was my favourite as a kid.

I'm so glad you like the painting so much! And Chamber of Secrets art is coming. I'm going to share the Wizard of Oz stuff I've done first - but it's coming
