Gouache paints with coloured pencil on watercolour paper

*** This is technically a re-posting of this illustration. I plan to do so with all of my Potter art work, building up to (hopefully) having some new stuff to share there after. So if you feel like you've seen this before - you probably have. On the upside, I'm sharing it at a larger resolution and without the DeviantArt watermark on it now ***

I don't know... I like the way the painting turned out alright. But it was the first official painting I was doing of Snape. Yeah, he was at the Professors table in the last illustration, but he was a small part of that illustration and it didn't count. Anyway, I'd have hoped to have grasped him better, but much like Dumbledore, this "first" painting of him isn't quite the way he usually looks in the rest of the illustrations. It isn't terrible, but it isn't quite right either. And something weird is going on with the lighting on his face... let's just say I feel highly critical of this piece.

That said, I was thrilled with the way Hermione turned out in it

Sorry, but I couldn't imagine Snape with a beard XD (I didn't picture him with one after all, before I saw "Rickman Snape" in the movies)

It must be "Imitate Your Head of House" Day in Slytherin House. Every Slytherin in class is assiduously practicing his Snape-eyebrows. Except Crabbe in the front row, who didn't get the memo, as usual.

Ha! I didn't really think of it... though I suppose, it's just sort of a common trait among the house

I think it's the infamous Harry-filter. Every time Harry looks at a Slytherin, he sees an evil expression, whether it exists or not.Β Β

That is an excellent way of seeing it Β

Ah yes, I remember. In the book, Snape had a beard, didn't he?

It actually doesn't say anywhere that he has a beard in the books. But also doesn't specifically say that he's clean shaven either. I just pictured him with it when I read the stories. And since it doesn't say in the books one way or another - I went for it and gave it to him Β

Love all the details and Snape's clothes. I personally can't see him ever sporting a beard though, unkempt or otherwise. The black eyes are perfect.

Thanks for the compliments! And I understand about the beard. Not only is there the movies with the great Alan Rickman who's a wonderful Snape, and J.K.R. has done artwork herself of him without facial hair - it's likely that he doesn't have it. And believe me, he wouldn't have it in my illustrations if it specifically said somewhere in the books that he was clean shaven. But I totally pictured him with it as I read the stories - and since it doesn't say anywhere , I gave it to him

Absolutely! I adore Alan Rickman's interpretation of Snape, and the design of his costume and look. But the beauty of different tastes is the myriad of interpretations of one and the same subject - DAers provide tons of examples of that. Β

Truth be told, I was rather excited to know a bit about potions back then.
Guess it was my childhood self being ready to be a cook.

I noticed Ron's grubby cauldron off the bat, but it was actually the other commenter who brought my attention to Draco's elegant one. Good thing Hagrid talked Harry out of buying that solid gold cauldron! He would have looked so pretentious. Your Hermione makes the painting! And poor Neville is petrified.Β

As I said to the other comment - it's the little details that make the moment, and If Harry had gotten the gold cauldron, that would have been what I'd have had to paint

Thanks so much for the compliments!

An interesting touch giving Snape a beard.

I know it's techincally "wrong", based on sketches J.K.Rowling has done of him. But I couldn't help it - it's how I always saw him in my mind when reading the stories. But speaking of techincally - it never flat-out says he doesn't have facial hair in the books, so I felt I could get away with it

Well they turned Hermionie black in the stage show so I see your point.

I actually really like the black Hermione idea. It actually makes a lot of sense. Her physicality's translate well to being someone of colour. The fact is I saw her as white in my mind as I read it (probably influenced by the movies) but I wish I hadn't... and wish I'd come up with it first.

Is that Pansy Parkinson in the pink ribbon?

I think Snape looks a little too "vampire" like ... but Ron may have a few too many freckles, or at least too detailed at a distance.

TheGeekCanPaint In reply to Hand-Sam-Art [2017-07-27 04:11:20 +0000 UTC]

Yes, that's Pansy

I can dig what you're saying about Snape. I'm not completely happy with how he turned out in this piece. It wasn't quite what I had in my mind... but there were a lot of things that din't translate from my mind to the painting.

You can already picture Pansy in her frilly pale pink dress robes for the Yule Ball three years later with that pink ribbon in her hair. XD
Glad you didn't make Pansy a blonde. lol

TheGeekCanPaint In reply to Jakegothicsnake [2017-07-27 04:35:15 +0000 UTC]

I'm not completely sure how to answer that. I mean, I do have a couple things in mind; something with Hermione's hair, and Harry's glasses, while really big on him in the first book, they'll fit better and better white each year. But other than stuff like that, it'll just happen naturally

Jakegothicsnake In reply to TheGeekCanPaint [2017-07-27 09:27:36 +0000 UTC]

I'd love to see you do separate, single paintings/drawings of certain characters in their Yule Ball robes like Harry, Ron, Hermione, Cedric, Cho, Viktor Krum, Fleur Delacour, Draco, Pansy, Parvati, and Padma, etc. when you do Goblet of Fire. I have ideas on how you could do the girls' shoes that could help add to their magical feel in their gowns. ;D

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheGeekCanPaint In reply to Jakegothicsnake [2017-07-27 13:05:30 +0000 UTC]

I will most certainly try and remember that when I'm doing Goblet of Fire. It's still a ways off... but when you think of it, not SO far; it's only the next book.Β Β That said, I am only now finally starting to get back in the grove of doing Potter art after not doing it for a while, (I set up the next painting for chapter 4 of Prisoner of Azkaban last weekend) so I'm not going to start plotting the next book too much. Anyway, I'm rambling. Thank you!
