Description
18 x 24ish - I don't remember the exact dimensions but the painting nearly fit the 18 x 24 space - though it was trimmed for the digital imageGouache and Watercolour paints with coloured pencil on watercolour paper - with some digital work for the logo
*** This is technically a re-posting of this illustration. I plan to do so with all of my Potter art work building up (hopefully) to having some new stuff to share there after. So if you feel like you've seen this before - you probably have. On the upside, I'm sharing it at a larger resolution and without the DeviantArt watermark on it now ***
All of the books are getting a sort of "bonus illustration that would slip on the inside front cover of the book it was for. Philosopher's Stone got one of the vignette drawings painted, Chamber of Secrets got an original piece of Lockhart, made to look like a signed photo (I even printed it out on on glossy photo paper), but Prisoner of Azkaban got something a bit more involved... it got a comic book.
If you don't know, for charity J.K.Rowling wrote a short story (very short - it all fit on a single post card) about James Potter and Sirius Black in their youth. I adapted that story into a short comic book that would. The interiors are all in pencil (like I do my vignette drawings) but for the cover I did a full painting - and this is it!
I struggle with backgrounds, so this one was very challenging - fortunately, I had photo reference to use, since I chose a rather iconic backdrop. Don't get me wrong, the story takes place in London, just not necessarily by Big Ben and all that. But I stand by it and think it turned out reasonably well. It was also fun designing the comic book logo... I tried to make it all look like it was from 70's since that's when the story was set.
