Description
The season that started it all, SpongeBob season 1. For a show that has gotten so crazy in recent years and turned into a giant franchise, season 1 is a very humble beginning. Not made out of the want for money, but by a guy who just loved marine life and wanted to introduce a general audience to it. SpongeBob season 1 stands out even against its competing seasons, in that it is very laid back in its tone. According to Tim Hill, Stephen Hillenburg was always a fan of simpler slice of life type stories; and in that way, Season 1 is Steve’s season, definitively. It’s definitely the season where his impact is felt the most.
The way that Season 1 is more subtle and natural than other seasons. Rather than actually having a rim shot sort of joke with a standard punchline or setup, the jokes often come from the characters reactions to things. A joke like Squidward cringing at SpongeBob playing the bassinet like a guitar wouldn’t work in any other season, I’d argue, because the characters feel much more real in season 1. Season 1 is ironically the most fleshed out Bikini Bottom ever gets. The underwater sounds are louder, there’s more bubbles, the characters act more like people. The situations are almost always rooted in the underwater theming. Even season 2 loses its grip on theming.
Another thing I think that’s worthy of praise in season 1 is the sound editing. There is a very nice balance of realistic Foley sounds and Hanna-Barbera type sounds not present in other seasons. The music editing is also great, Hawaiian and nautical type music is a constant in season 1. Voice acting is also top tier in season 1, and probably the best the show has done in terms of performance for some characters, most notably Plankton, Patrick, and Mr. Krabs.
So overall, I really love season 1. Although I may not be as nostalgic for it as something like season 4, it still holds a special place in my heart.
