Ah season 3. It is the best of times, it is the worst of times. Well that's half right. Season 3 is overall the best season of the premovie era, but in turn it spits out the worst episodes of the era as well. The Great Snail Race, upon rewatch, is probably my least favorite episode in premovie. Just One Bite is top 10 of the entire series, it's amazing. The cut scene is great too, it's a shame it doesn't play fully in America.

It should go without saying that this season has the sharpest writing out of, like, the entire series. The extra emphasis on writing is felt even compared to the more joke dense season 2. Nearly every episode is hit after hit of jokes. The characters are all still in character however, it is easy to notice Mr. Krab's love of money is a lot more focused on this season in his spotlight episodes. It's fine though, all his episodes are hilarious. Well, to be honest, all these episodes are hilarious.

The music is significantly less Hawaiian than previous seasons, which is sad, but it still serves its purpose. Just nothing truly above average anymore like seasons 1 or 2. Sound is even more foley based than season 2, I'd say. The voice acting is still top tier, but Plankton's voice is noticeably softer. It goes with his new persona from Algae's Always Greener, though. Krabs has also pretty much lost his pirate-y Scotsman accent altogether.

The animation still looks great, but there are episodes where the outlines are thicker and the animation is way more on model. An episode like Just One Bite still looks fantastic, though. Generally speaking, a lot less expressive than seasons 1 and 2. The backgrounds are also noticeably lacking in season 3 compared to the earlier two seasons, though. The painterly aspect seems to have really been played down.

So all in all, season 3 is the best season so far, and I can only hope that season 4 continues this momentum...like this season actually ended up doing, contrast to Futurama's season 4.
