Description
PHEW This took all day but I finally figured I'd throw up a tutorial on creating your very own style. I'm not claiming that I'm a master of the world's most unique style or anything, but I figured I'd offer my take on how you CAN create a unique style.Credits:

Agreed! I usually find it in the weirdest references. I love applying sculpture and architecture to my art. Though I guess that's still being inspired by art in a way

I have been looking for something like this for quite a while.
Thinking about creating my own style actually kept me from sleeping lol. But my mind was set on the typical cartoon/anime thing that I ALWAYS seem to stare at and find the "most attractive" to my eye. I've been quite irritated about that actually, since there is a wide arrange of "styles" anime has, but I never got out of the basic big eyed cute stuff, sticking to hardcore proportions.( I still remember the first moment that brought me to drawing. And that was one of my brother's friends drawing something on my chalkboard when I was little. I copied that drawing over and over xD) About the reality thing, that kind of punched me haha. Now that you mentioned it, it is more than true. It always thwarted me when I was outside my room with friends and I couldn't draw, but now I realized I can spend that time actually observing objects and people. I've always been a lazy observer and never took the time for it.
Even when searching galleries. I always look for things I Know I'll like instantly, fave it, or save it, but never bother to actually really take a closer look at it. Only when I use it as a reference. Which is actually quite sad :C I find that people take less and less time to actually LOOK at art. It's either pretty or fugly. lol. The generation of the impatient 8D
But yes, thank you for reading this rant if you did haha. I'm very greatful for this educational experience. It opened my mind much more and reminded me of the "being" art actually is. : D AWESOME JOB! It is well worth it.

I've been trying to develop my own style for a while. Its slightly starting to work a bit because I've found a new way to draw eyes (mainly my OC's) and hoping to stick with it for a while. I recently did a quick review exercise with drawing realistic eyes a couple of weeks ago during intermediate drawing class and started to somewhat unconsciously applied my drawing methods used in my realism works on to my stylized drawings (sketches in my daily planner). For most part Takeshi Obata has been my primary influence for a while, since high school, and trying to incorporate other styles such as Yoshitaka Amano's as well as other artists (major and minor ones) into my work. At some point I want to aim for a semi-realistic style and a bit distant from Japanese anime/manga because I want to break away from styles people are too familiar with. I imagine it'll be a slow process but if I continue to work on it I'll eventually get somewhere...

I am having serious trouble finding my style for wolves. Can you please help me? I have been practicing and practicing, but somehow they always look the same! I have been studying and using ref, but I don't have a printer! Plus, EVERY time I show my latest wolf drawing to my friend, she ALWAYS criticizes it. And not in a helpful way....She says "It looks weird." And I'm like "How? Be specific." "The Head." "What about it??" "It just looks weird." So see? Even my friends can't help me! Any advice?
OH! Plus I want mine more cartoon-like and less realistic. But I want a little realistic flair, like claws I can't draw claws very well, and poses and...Expressions? And accessories?

Nice tutorial, really informative!
Despite that, I'd like to comment 'bout the idea of reaching one style. I pretty much find that style is equal to vices of drawing and it can actually limit the artist's repertory. The great thng about this tuto, is that it shows people how to use references to build the art and that is what I find the great gig of drawing; combine things you see to create something else, and the final art shall depend on your intention. As much as my skills are limited, my drawings keep constantly changing style, day by day, but not as something I don't control; I use the many languages I have, picking each style that I find better for what I'm willing to do. Not that I don't have any vices, too. ahah~. And this tuto is great for this, because that shows how researches are important before and while doing the art, and how it actually influences what the artist'll do~.

Well just looking at this I pretty much know what my problem is: I've been looking at my own stuff way too much 8|
Mostly like staring at an old (and now fugly) picture and wondering; how am I ever going to fix/update this while pretty much ignoring the plain fact I need to look out, and not just look out but TAKE what I see and apply it to my art. From your examples it's pretty clear that pretty much anything (from objects to architecture) can be a good influence to the variety of character designs.
So thank you, again. I've been going through a lot of your tutorials and there's a lot I can start to exercise my creativity on.

I totally know what you mean too! Sometimes I get in style ruts and feel like I need to improve. I used to be such an anal "DON'T COPY ANYONE'S STUFF" person. I was all about "YOU HAVE TO BE ORIGINAL" but then I realized originality COMES from the influence of other people. That's how art really forms. Observation not only from people, but from everything.

Hmmm...I'm very much Influenced by your tutorial.
But can I just say.....
Some ppl, think INSIDE the box, Others may think OUTSIDE the box...
But just think....
What if there WAS NO BOX?
Just a suggestion...
Very nice tutorial! thank you very much! ^^

Mistress-Illusion In reply to ThirdPotato [2011-02-28 06:43:35 +0000 UTC]
No Worries!
No, There Not!
Infact, as Artist's we're limiting ourselves...To A BOX!
hahahahahah....it's funny, considering that artist can percieve and see what other may not be able to....they see the world in a different light, and That is what makes us special! What makes us Unique! Not Just to to other artist's but also to the world.
Therefore, Limiting us to a Box is like giving our imagination a large, yet in a way limited space to run wild...be free...
But! if there was NO box for us to see and look at...if there was no box At All, wouldn't that be, just magnificent? ^^ Were free ro roam...run as we please!
where as, if the box was there...even though most artist's try and create something "Out Of The Box", if they look back...they can still "see" the box...
Like giving wild animal space to roam yet stopping them from completely being free...where as, if they had the WORLD as their playground...*like how it was before man took over*...now...that would be animal paradise....
hehehhehe...I hope your not confused...and seeing where i'm trying to get at....:S ^^"
This is just my opinion though...and if you can understand and maybe even acknowledge this message...that is all i'm hoping for!
*wen I say "you" i'm speaking to the general public...^^*

I agree with you on all accounts except "that artist can percieve and see what other may not be able to....they see the world in a different light, and That is what makes us special!"
I believe as Picasso once said, that we are all born artists, and it's maintaining that as we become adults that is tricky. To exclude ourselves from other people, or to say that others can't be like us because "they are not artists," it just doesn't settle well with me, in fact look at this whole tutorial! That's what it's all about!
It's about observation, even the blind can observe with touch, sound, taste, and smell! What makes us born artists, is that we are born visualists. You ask any child to draw something, and they will. Ask a child, any child "draw a city," and they will bust out their crayons and draw you a whole city. Now you ask a college art student "Draw me a city," I guarantee you only a small percentage will even attempt it.
It's maintaining that childlike bravado to say "I CAN create anything and everything I can see in my eyes and mind," that makes us artists.

Ah! Now that I see your point of view...I completely agree with you!
Except...I didn't mean that about others not "being like us" like that...and trust me, Everyone is an artist in their own way/ right! Cooks, Architects, Buisness Ppl...Anyone you can think of...

This...This Really touched me! I Completely agree with you! NOBODY these days is LIKE that! And when I say nobody...I mean...well to some extent I guess...ppl think that those sweet moments in our childhood, that crazy, silly, funny innocence, has become "Too" childish! They never try to take a challenge head on or, even if they think it's too difficult, they don't have that "I Can Take Over The Wold" kinda attutude! *sigh*
This quote: "It's maintaining that childlike bravado to say "I CAN create anything and everything I can see in my eyes and mind," that makes us artists."
Amen My friend! AMEN! Very Well said!

Aw thanks XD but yeah... I find that it's difficult to stay an artist because of the amount of discouragement we see every day of our life. "Art won't make money." "you're not good at drawing." "You're not good enough." "that doesn't look like it at all!" "Cartoons are for kids." We've all experienced those things. And each time someone believes those lies, then another artist is weeded out...

Naww...ur welcome! ^^
I COMPLETELY Agree with you! What IS with ppl these days? They see someone who wants art as a career, and think,"What? No...how u gonna survive?!" WTH? Art is a prefession, LIKE ANY OTHER! If you think about it...we, as Artists, have something those discouraging people Don't! The ability to C.R.E.A.T.E.!
And
"WHO THE HELL WITH A BRAIN IN HIS/HER HEAD SAID THAT CARTOONS ARE FOR KIDS ONLY????"
For ONCE have ppl considered HOW manyy ADULTS are BEHIND the scenes DRAWING & MAKING those cartoons? NOBODY is EVER TOO OLD for CARTOONS! And, In saying that, NOBODY is EVER too old for ANYTHING!
All those sick ppl who discourage artist's, and stop them from creating....they do not realise that they are taking away, CREATION, and LIFE from the world....
"Artist's are NOT weeds! We are FLOWERS...help us NOURISH our skills so that we can shine in FULL BLOOM for the WORLD to see!"

This has to be one of the most useful tutorials I have seen in a long time.
Too many works here on DA are very derivative from specific styles.
