Description PHEW This took all day but I finally figured I'd throw up a tutorial on creating your very own style. I'm not claiming that I'm a master of the world's most unique style or anything, but I figured I'd offer my take on how you CAN create a unique style.

I was linked to this tutorial by another artist just was I was pondering over my own style and how to make it seem fresh and all. And I was mildly confused about how my art teacher went about trying to encourage my art by forcing to drop something else; but your tutorial enlightened me a bit- made me understand the importance of referencing from real life. I would have never have considered this before, but looking at this now- it's become so completely obvious! Still, not so obvious as to be completely recognizable on first sight. I guess that's the beauty of creating your own style and such

Thanks for writing this up- I would definitely love to try doing more of this!

This has to be one of the coolest tutorials I have ever seen, you explain style without saying this is the only way it can be done, and that is awesome! I am very impressed especially that you decided to tackle such a hard idea as this as style is a very hard topic to try and give any sort of a solid answer to. Bravo!

Very helpful tutorial! I think it was a really great point you made that unique style is developed through our own interpretation of reality.

Very nice tutorial. I appreciate the time, and effort put into this, it's very inspiring.

I especially notice the research you did (don't know if it's general knowledge for you but even so) to incorporate with your words of wisdom. It gives a genuine feel to it.

Thanks for creating and sharing!

InstantOatmeal13 In reply to ??? [2010-07-12 04:33:37 +0000 UTC]

Wow. I am usually not at all impressed by "style" tutorials. Really, I'm not. They're long, contrived, and boring as hell. But this, this is freaking amazing. You kept it simple and interesting as well as very realistic with wonderful material to back up everything you say... Absolutely A+ work right here. I love you so hardcore.

No problem! I actually just finished the assignment as well:

Loads of fun! You should make something with a bunch of random mix-up photos to turn into character designs. I'd dig it!

That's awesome! I love how he turned out! That's a great color pallet too! Haha I think I shall n.n I like to base some of my characters off of "ugly" chincy little cartoon things I find here and there. XD
[link] He was based off of a plush I bought at a flea market [link]
[link] He was based off a dog toy [link]
And [link] he was based off a 50 cent machine toy I got XD [link]

InstantOatmeal13 In reply to ThirdPotato [2010-07-12 06:43:47 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I definitely drew the most inspiration from the cathedral and the goat. The creek/foliage threw me off a bit, but I sneaked it in there a little. (Ugh, I hate how it's "sneaked" and not "snuck.")

Oh my gosh, the last one cracks me up! XD I love that you can draw inspiration from all kinds of places! It's a great gift to have!

The weirdest thing I've ever based a character off of was the guy to the left on the very bottom: [link] He was based off of a jelly-bean. You can't see it too clearly, but his torso is very much jelly-bean shaped...>>

ThirdPotato In reply to InstantOatmeal13 [2010-07-12 07:02:08 +0000 UTC]

LoL haha a Jelly bean! That's freakin' awesome. XD I totally get that feeling from him too! Nice subtlety. I also like how he looks like a creepy weird guy. Cuz jelly beans ARE weird. XD Especially if its those Bertie Botts Every-Flavor Beans. XDDDD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

InstantOatmeal13 In reply to ThirdPotato [2010-07-12 07:20:44 +0000 UTC]

He may *look* like a creepy weird guy, but in reality, he's just weird. ;D

I didn't know there was a mathematical formula for style! That means style can be computed. There should be a style calculator on Wolfram|Alpha.
