Description PHEW This took all day but I finally figured I'd throw up a tutorial on creating your very own style. I'm not claiming that I'm a master of the world's most unique style or anything, but I figured I'd offer my take on how you CAN create a unique style.

I was going to just fave and not leave a comment, but then I realized one wouldn't get lost because there are surprisingly few. This is a really good tutorial. I realized as soon as I saw Hercules in theaters Meg was based off a column, but never really thought of it beyond that. So faving now!

This is really a great exercise in 'opening' the mind to different opportunities and destroying the rigidness of schema and the limits of things.

lorikitty In reply to ??? [2010-06-09 07:12:45 +0000 UTC]

this was sincerely fascinating! Honestly, I'm curious about how those last two artists indirectly developed from a main source. It's actually one of those burning questions, "what is style?? how do you get it? does it matter?"
Some people I know would be insulted and others would be proud. a matter of recognition I suppose! like the "look what I drew mommy!" "oh, a helicopter!" "no mama it's a turtle" thing xD
anyway!
You're awesome for putting this together (is it terrible of me to want more? xD I'm seriously curious about those last artists!)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ThirdPotato In reply to lorikitty [2010-06-09 14:38:08 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much! Well as the tutorial explains, style is derived from individual interpretation of reality, like you said about the helicopter and the turtle. You can see style most predominantly in children's art, because they are uninfluenced by art, and more influenced by what they see in reality first.
With the latter two artists, as with MOST artists really, we draw from our memory banks of what influences us most. It's likely that that's the art they grew up learning about or liking. They also combine hundreds of other influences to create a unique style. No artist really draws from just ONE influence. With Fables, you can see an influence from Bouguereau's paintings, or other painters of that time. You can also see influence from other comic artists, fantasy painters, illustrators, etc. Unique style is just like that equation there. The more influences, and the more personal input, and the more you draw directly from the source of the inspiration, the more unique the style.
I hope that helps to clarify.

Gee thanks, fyu! I'll jump right on this! I just hope they won't be over analyzed like i always do. But yeah, the Craig McCracken reference is great. Maybe i should incorporate a bit a his style in there too, no? I just love how he draws clothes..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ThirdPotato In reply to PuppyAkamaru [2010-06-09 05:29:12 +0000 UTC]

Ja, the more refs you draw from the better, and as always, go back to the original source, reality if you can. Try the excercize too, it might help

PuppyAkamaru In reply to ThirdPotato [2010-06-09 07:04:12 +0000 UTC]

kk. I've already started referencing baggy clothes from real life. You have no idea how hard it is to draw baggy jeans. All them folds and wrinkles and crap xD
