This is nice, thank-you. I'm on the cusp of doing some cartoonish characters cel shading and was slamming my head against the desk unsure how to shade something so complicated compared to my usual.

There are more complicated tutorials but sometimes mush brains like mine, need to start off with something simpler and this was perfect.

One of the days you should do a chibi tutorial! (if u haven't done so already...?)

ThirdPotato In reply to bunnydesuuu [2013-04-28 16:27:22 +0000 UTC]
Aw thanks; Unfortunately there's not too much to drawing chibis that wouldn't wind up being a tutorial on "Draw like me!" XD It's mostly just a matter of caricature in a way; Simplification.

Still, sometimes having a tutorial for even simple things might help. After all, what is simple to one may not be simple to another...

I appreciate the suggestion though "Chibi" to me, anyway, is really heavily based on how the person wants to draw it. I don't know that I could make a tutorial on the process, as it might just turn out like one of those "draw like me" tutorials which I'm highly opposed to XD

I see...
When I say tutorial I just mean like mainly the pose and proportions, not much on the details, so i guess it wont really be a "draw like me" tutorial But it's ok if you dont want to of course...

that's exactly why I hate and suck at shading >,< It is a complex mental process and actually requires me to think hard

Wow i have always shaded my characters like on the first little girl. But i had always that feeling of "this is not quite right".
My country thanks you miss Fyuvix, and we'll repay the favor with a payment of no less than 4 potatoes per mont. uwΓΊ

It's easy to think that because cel shading is a "simpler" coloring style, one doesn't have to pay much attention to the forms they're shading. Nothing could be further from the truth and this tutorial makes that clear. Not that I'm an expert, but paying more attention to the forms I'm shading has been helping me improve my cel shading approach.

Thank you very much! And it's quite true! In fact, cel shading is really just "blocking out" shades which should be done in ALL manners of light study before rendering a full piece!

As a shiny new artist, I was wondering how I might accomplish this kind of shading. Thanks for sharing such a great write up.

Thank you. This will be helpful in this drawing I am currently working on. I really like how you choose the colors to make the shading pop out more- it's helpful and easier to understand this way.
