Description
This is just my current method, not necessarily the best way or the right way.To preempt some questions:
- I am using two layers for most of this painting, except near the end when I flatten them.
- I'm using Photoshop CS3. My brushes are up in my gallery for download, but I'm only using one for this painting, my trusty 46 spatter set on dynamic opacity.
- I know about the eye. I was in a hurry.

It's called "other dynamics" and you can set it to pen pressure.

great tutorial as always alexandra. One problem I always have with tutorials are, how long does it usually take you to finish it? Since when I do my work I keep on thinking "there's no way those people are taking THIS long to finish one piece!" .. just wondering, that's all.

This painting/tutorial took me about 2 hours. The painting itself probably only took 45 minutes.

To me it looks like the colors got flatter when you upped the saturation, but it's just a walk-through so it's not a big deal but you might want to watch out for that in the future. However, I may just be seeing things. haha
Oh also I wanted to ask, do you lock your upper hair layer when you colored on it? Just wondering because I do that sometimes to keep my original shapes. Also I noticed you flip your pictures sometimes how does that help?

Yes, I did Flipping the picture can sometimes show you errors in anatomy and composition that you didn't see before. It gives you a fresh perspective.

I've been wondering how you get such consistent results with your portraits, and so this was absolutely wonderful to read. Thank you very much for posting it.
It was surprising to read in your journal that you don't consider yourself to have a consistent style. It's all in the process, and you have a very nice one here that gives great results.

This is wonderful! Thank you for posting it! I have one question though, I work with CS2, does it have the dynamic opacity setting? If so where is it?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
thundercake In reply to MelissaDalton [2009-02-27 23:38:43 +0000 UTC]
It's in your brushes window. Click on "other dynamics" and set the opacity to pen pressure.

Quicksilver-Hybrid In reply to calmyafarm [2009-02-28 02:34:26 +0000 UTC]
a light sketch that's made before anything else so you know what you're going to be painting over it in the end. it's called an "under painting" because it's beneath everything else =]
