WARNING! Its a big file!FULL VIEW TO VIEW THE TUTORIAL!!!
This is the second part of my tutorial. It covers Cell shading 8D At last!
Since some of you asked in the last tutorial (and as I said before <.< ) I did this in Open Canvas, but I am pretty sure that, even though the options and names are different, It can work in other programs.
I hope you enjoy and you find it helpful!!
*If you have questions, leave them here. However, if your answer is actually answered in the tutorial, I will ignore your question (sorry if I sound mean, but some of you guys need to read more carefully)*

Okay, so here's my question, can this type of shading be done effectively with a mouse? Do you achieve your 'unshaky' lines by using a tablet?

toi-chan In reply to TerryTibke [2006-05-22 21:22:38 +0000 UTC]
Yes you can. It can take a little more practice, but you can. I myself used to cell shade with mouse with no problem and nowadays I still do from time to time.

Whne you say the color of the shading should also go with the enviorment, how do you go about making sure the colors dont look weird? Like if your background is purple, but you dont want to shade directly with purple. How do you know what color to use? I cant get the hang of it.

toi-chan In reply to Yukita [2006-05-22 23:03:41 +0000 UTC]
What a hard question. I myself just do it assuming what colour would look better and just trying a few tones of the colour until I get the look I want. I learnt how to do it better as I practiced so I dont really know if there is an exact method or trick to follow to get the correct shade. I will do a little research to see if there is another faster way to do it (cause I wanna know too) and then I can tell you if you want :3

How do you make the layer gray just by making a layer?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
toi-chan In reply to kamali-chan [2006-05-22 22:47:53 +0000 UTC]
You create a layer and you just fill it with a gray colour.

It didnt work for me. . . Probably cause I have Photoshop rather than Open Canvas. . .
I tried to get Open Canvas once but It is for a Windows and I have a Mac. . .

Good tutorial! Although there are already loads of cellshading tutorials, this one puts some easier overlooked things in the spotlight. Like the use of 'triangles', this is something that is pretty important wih cellshading (in my opinion atleast) yet most tutorials don't mention it. Anyway, great job!
Also I noticed you still use an old version of opencanvas, in case you want v4.03 you can get it here . Yay for openCanvas users!

Aaaaah! Are you serious??? Do you know how long I've been looking for this darn program (cuz I dun wanna pay for it )??? Now you (like you were sent from heaven) give us a link? OMG!!
Sankyuuu!!! Thank you so much! I can't explain how much I wanted this program (I was beginning to think i should just buy it, and now I have it!!! Without ANY effort!!)
*runs of to check out OC*

PaPerfeed In reply to CherryJam [2006-06-17 10:02:03 +0000 UTC]
Ahaha, well I would gladly pay for it to be honest. It's just that I have no method of doing so (No credit-card and such). It's just such a great program that the developers deserve the money. Anyway, it's not like i'm against piracy .
Spread the OpenCanvas love!

Oh yes, that's why I was considering it, but I never used the program before, so I wasn't sure it'd be that great, so I didn't want to spend money on something which I might not like (I am very happy with photoshop, so if oC isn't better, it'd be a waste of money), but oC is very nice. I'm stille getting used to it though. Hehe Also, my parents forbid me to buy anything via internet. Damn. Anyhow, that's why I didn't (couldn't) buy the program.
But thanks again for the link!

Hehe, yeah. did they have a trial? woops...
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
PaPerfeed In reply to CherryJam [2006-06-20 10:59:59 +0000 UTC]
I didn't mean the use of a trial, but yeah they do have one. I actually meant first downloading the full program and then if you really like it, buy it (It's nice to have originals). That way developers will also have to try their best to create a really good program instead of releasing sloppy stuff . But I admit that I have not bought a lot of programs, even though I love them. Since I have to eat too you know
.
Let's just say I love piracy, but I am willing to pay for a program if it's actually good and not way too expensive for a normal person to purchase.

PaPerfeed In reply to ericajo [2006-05-22 20:56:56 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, it has so many features for it's size. The main thing that separates it from Photoshop is the lack of an extensive archive of filters. But I don't specificly like PS's filters anyway. Besides Photoshop doesn't have things like event files. Both programs have their pro's and cons though, just that oC is so much smaller in size and yet it still achieves so much ^^.

I know you said you did this in OpenCanvas, but I was wondering did you use a tablet? Or is this for mouse users? o-o; Anyway, thank you so much for teaching how to cell shade in OC...I always wanted to learn how to color something in it.

Yes, I did use tablet. It has some little things just for tablet users (like toggling off the pressure of the pen.) but the main steps of the tutorial are meant to be for both, tablet and mouse users.
