Description
the Hindenburg,Pride of Nazi Germany in luxury transatlantic passenger travel service. unfortunately,due to an embargo of helium by the United States,Germany was forced to use highly inflammable and explosive hydrogen as a lifting gas. the tragic destruction of the largest airship of all time on May 6,1937 at NAS Lakehurst,NJ,spelled the end of large rigid airships to this day.Related content

AMT made a few kits of lighter-than-air back in the mid-70s,a Hindenburg,USS Akron/Macon and a US Army Civil War ballon,but very scarce collectors items nowadays,not good sellers back then.

The thing with the hydrogen wasn't the best idea. It's like a car which needs nitroglycerine as fuel.

best they could do. the US had a monopoly on helium and it was embargoed for sale.

or just a bit of bad luck. the Graf Zeppelin flew around the world for years on hydrogen without any mishaps.

if only they had been able to obtain helium......but Uncle Sam refused to sell any to anyone,for fear it might be used for Warlike Purposes. {Nuclear Research,perhaps?}

kanyiko In reply to TomCatDriver [2008-04-04 11:42:50 +0000 UTC]
Meh... More likely out of fear the Germans would start to use Zeppelins in the same kind of way as the USS Macon and USS Akron. Imagine the Germans having been able to build similar craft, with the ability to carry divebombers to just outside the US coast, and without having to worry about them getting hit by incendary bullets...

that was another possibility. but helium had many other uses as well.

the swastika is simply a part of 20th Century history,as to who just happened to be in power in Germany at the time.
