Description British Airways B747 with the Right And Proper engines! Rolls-Royce RB-211s,so very refined.....they just have the sweetest sound when "spooling up" to takeoff power,as heard from the cockpit. simply a matter of taking an already great plane from Boeing and making it into something even better. good show, old chaps.....quite.

Yup, went on the Concorde. Just asking, why did you use the word toff, just an English joke? Me I couldn't care less.

scenic backgrounds are enamel on honeycomb aircraft floor material, sky and clouds airbrushed on sheet Lexan. very convincing, yes? certainly better than just a tabletop!

Thats true. I think my uncle used to use an air brush but I dont think he has it anymore. I'll have to buy one.
Do you normally tape over the areas you're not painting?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TomCatDriver In reply to captainflynn [2009-12-11 16:09:03 +0000 UTC]

yes, areas not to be painted should be masked to prevent overspray. i have a few strategies for painting airliners, such as paint the Corogard areas first. also,i usually give the entire plane a coating of silver-grey primer to make sure of no surface blemishes/defects prior to applying the rest of the scheme. my fave paint is the Tamiya TS spray lacquer, decanted from the aerosol can and applied by airbrush, very short dry-time compared to most enamels.{oil-based Humbrol does give a good finish, but takes forever to cure properly!} another time-saving trick is to use Bare Metal Foil for leading edges and polished metal undersurfaces, saves lots of tricky masking.

TomCatDriver In reply to captainflynn [2009-12-11 20:56:57 +0000 UTC]

OK,good little kit. the way the British camos were applied to full-size aircraft was with rubber stencil mats, cut to fit the type being painted, for both A and B schemes. you can duplicte the process in miniature with paper stencils cut from a photocopy of a planview of the scheme, enlarged to the correct size, perhaps from the kit instruction sheet. first, spray the undersurfaces in sky, duckegg blue of lt. sea grey, mask and spray the uppersurfaes in earth or dark sea-grey and then stencil them, using small loops of masking-tape to hold the stencils in the proper locations and spray on the dark green. the RAF was and still is very strict about following the precise patterns as per Air Ministry specifications.
