Description
Submission for Contest 23 atThe Hunchback of Notre Dame is set in 1482. The idea of making a piece set in a medieval book came to me last week (if I had more time, I would use water colors instead, but this came out ok I guess
The font is called Hybrida, or by a cruder name, bastarda. The earliest bastarda was produced by Gutenberg in 1454/1455, and given how prominent Gutenberg is in the book, I thought the font would be appropriate. [link]
The lyrics are of course from The Bells of Notre Dame. The missing part about fisherman and baker is deliberate, cos I decided it would be too long for the layout.
Inking the lyrics took much longer than I expected (why does 'a' have a random appendix???) but I had fun.
As for the characters:
Archdeacon: I put him in the more common cassock compared to the vestment the Disney design gave him.
Quasimodo and Phoebus: I kept their designs since they are pretty close to the style back then anyway (or maybe I was lazy, hm).
Frollo: I looked at men's fashion back then ([link] ). As you can see from the link, older men were recorded to wear houppelande long, either calf or ankle length. In the end, I decided to follow the 1939 movie version as it is very close to the stuff I read and pictures I saw of men depicted in the 15th century.
Clopin and Esmeralda: I found this pretty interesting collection of paintings of gypsies in the 15th and 16th century. [link] The clothes were plain as you can see.
In the end, given that Clopin's Disney design is like that of a jester, I gave him a similar jester costume.
As for Esme, I went back to the source material, aka Victor Hugo's book:"She wore a golden bodice tightly laced about her delicate body, exposing her beautiful shoulders. Below her wasp waist billowed a multicolored skirt, which, in the whirling dance, gave mementary glimpses of her finely shaped legs." I also based her pose on this well-known drawing of Esme. [link]
Hope y'all like it!

Oh my goodness, this is just perfect. I'm amazed with the amount of work that you put into it, and with how realistic it looks, and how it's a perfect mesh of the Disney and the novel and the history, and... it's all-around perfect.

I love seeing your work this is so cute, your water color techniques are awesome! I'm always using Microsoft paint when I do doodle and decide to color it. When I use water color I never know when too much is TOO much. Lovely work

Thanks for your comment! Erm, the characters are mostly color pencils I wanted water colors but that would take longer for me and the deadline for contest is next week. So I settled for color pencils.
