Description "Oh, yes!" continued the priest, in a voice which seemed to proceed from the depths of his being, "behold here a symbol of all. She flies, she is joyous, she is just born; she seeks the spring, the open air, liberty: oh, yes! but let her come in contact with the fatal network, and the spider issues from it, the hideous spider! Poor dancer! poor, predestined fly! Let things take their course, Master Jacques, 'tis fate! Alas! Claude, thou art the spider! Claude, thou art the fly also! Thou wert flying towards learning, light, the sun. Thou hadst no other care than to reach the open air, the full daylight of eternal truth; but in precipitating thyself towards the dazzling window which opens upon the other world,—upon the world of brightness, intelligence, and science—blind fly! senseless, learned man! thou hast not perceived that subtle spider's web, stretched by destiny betwixt the light and thee—thou hast flung thyself headlong into it, and now thou art struggling with head broken and mangled wings between the iron antennae of fate! Master Jacques! Master Jacques! let the spider work its will!" - The Two Men Clothed in Black, from Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame (or Notre Dame de Paris)

This is actually a fanart of a fanart, using watercolors and color pencils. I love the artwork by AleksDeSilesia , whose account is now deactivated. One of my favorites is a piece of Frollo and Esmeralda in the open. He has broken wings and she is dancing and they are chained together. In the background is the sinister gibbet.

I wanted to do something like it, to capture the melancholy and bleakness, but instead of chains I drew spiderwebs. Frollo's pose is based on a statue of a wounded Galatian in the Louvre. There's no reason, I just needed a dramatic pose. www.louvre.fr/en/oeuvre-notice… Esmeralda's pose is based on a photograph of a ballet dancer I came across on tumblr. and I can't find it anymore.

If anyone can find any online picture by AleksDeSilesia which I'm talking about, please send me the link and I'll put it up here! Mine isn't as good.

Edit: Thanks to a dA member, who does not wish to be named, I got a link to the picture! Here it is: www.mediafire.com/convkey/1fb0…

Lovely! I think you captured Esmeralda and Frollo quite well, and of course Notre Dame in the background. I have been a big fan of the book for the longest time, so I am glad to see some fanart.

I saw the rendition you're talking about some time ago and it was very good. Shame the artist was deactivated because deviations are a pain to track down after that! But I wouldn't sweat it if I were you. This is a great ode to Aleks' piece and I like it a lot!

Oh it's so lovely! I was a fan of his art as well, this is the first I've heard that he's left! What a shame I loved seeing his Hunchback renditions... :\
