Description
Of course, the majority of Goths are unique in their style and music preferences. However, within the subculture there are certain "types" of Goth with particular characteristics. And it can be fun to classify them. Naturally, classifications for each "type" vary from person to person, so you may disagree with what I say here!I had a lot of reservations about doing this type - I know that Goths seem to hate being associated with Emos, and vica versa. But because I've had so many comments mentioning Emos, I thought that it really had to be done.
Sorry that this has been a long time in coming, and that it's drawn even sloppier than usual... I've been revising for and doing my university final exams for the past month, and I've only just had a break...

I don't know why some people hate emos so much...
Anyway, your artwork is so cute! Some of these people I just wish were a plushie so I could snuggle them! Hehehe, seriously, you present an unbiased view of all the types of the subculture and give good and bad points of each, and never actually put anyone down. Some of these types I've never even heard of but I'm glad to learn about them.
(I just had three cups of coffee, so I'm a bit hyper.)

Sometimes are emos described so close to goths that it scares me I should never describe emo subculture as part of the goth one.
And when somebody (member of uninformed public) calls or label me (goth, mostly victorian-like dressed) an emo, I just hiss under my nose: "Muggle."

"Muggle" perfect! Β Also, emo is not a subculture, it is simply a teenage fashion trend.

I'm slowly working into becoming goth, but cash is tight, so changing my style is gonna take a while. Not sure which type I'm going to fall under though. I like the punk look, but I think I'd be on the more hardcore end of the spectrum.

There's really no such thing as an emo goth unless an emo actually got into the Gothic music/subculture. those kinds usually quickly transition to full blown Goth quickly anyway.

I saw a comment somewhere back that said something like "Emos just don't feel like spending more money on clothes and are cheap".
As an emo kid, I'd like to point out how insensitive that is - not everybody can afford expensive gothic clothes.
Anyway.
Emo went out of mainstream fashion in like 2008. Nobody is an emo kid for attention/trends anymore. Any emo kids now in 2012 are either posers, or actually love emo culture.

π: 0 β©: 1
dyssonance In reply to BlackWithoutFingers [2013-02-05 19:23:52 +0000 UTC]
Oh I know - it's just that person seemed to imply, in general, that you're lazy if you don't spend a lot of money on clothing... which is wrong.
And no, I said people are usually emo because they are really into the emo music scene (with the exception of posers), not because they're unsavvy goth wannabes on a budget - that's not what I meant sorry
π: 0 β©: 1
BlackWithoutFingers In reply to dyssonance [2013-02-05 22:06:03 +0000 UTC]
Oh, I see. But I think the term "emo" nowadays has a different meaning. I think emo is an attitude and clothing style rather than a music scene, because all the so called "emo" bands nowadays are pop-punk or alternative rock. I doubt that more than 10% of the emos don't even know sdre or rites of spring.

dyssonance In reply to BlackWithoutFingers [2013-02-07 19:25:05 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, those were the ones I refer to as 'posers' or scene kids. I think they've been dying out since like 2008, but it's sad that they're STILL what comes to people's mind when they hear "emo".
Also there's some kind of real emo music revival going on, so hopefully that less-than-10% can grow. ^^'

There is one kid at school who claims to be "emo"that annoys me at school, but hes just in it to be popular and scene. There arn't many true emos around it seems. Just scenes. And because most are all just in it to be scene kids (and scene kids are annoying in general)thats all we get or see now a days. The mopey whiny scene bitches are the ones who have created a bad name for it.

To the people who are calling Emos whiny, depressed attention-seekers. The truth in the matter of fact is that those stereotypes of Emo are incorrect just as the stereotypes and misconceptions related to Goth are. The Emo subculture has nothing to do being depressed, whining about your life whether it sucks or not, or self harm, but is in fact about , deep meaingful Emotions and expressing them. The people whom claim to be Emo because they were dark colors, cut themselves, are depressed, ETC, they're Posers. You can blame the media and people, but I blame Hot Topic because like Goth, Hot Topic took Emo and completely changed it's image and meaning of it in a very negative way. As for Emo music, real Emo music is nothing like the Hardcore Metal or depressing soft rock music that Hot Topic or the posers claim it is. In fact, real Emo (as well as Screamo) is heavily influence by Hardcore Punk.

The problem is that now most of the people in these subculters are posers (not all though, I'm not generalising). I spent my teen years with a bunch of people who called themselves 'emo', and just wore black, listened to MCR, and FAKED mental illnesses. I never regarded myself as an emo, and I found their whole 'I'm mentally ill when I'm not' thing really offensive and irritating. The emo culture of the 90's was pretty cool, I'm not sure what happened to it, or the kids of today. It's kinda sad really.
....I'm not sure why I say kids of today when it was only five years ago that I was a 13 year old, which is kinda the age group I'm talking about, really. Β

it even offends me to consider these whiney cry babies goth. i hate emos so so much. it is synonymous with shallow, weak, diluted, uncreative, spineless, dependant, attention-whoring and pretentious. But sadly it looks like its not going away anytime soon and on top of that it has changed what public perception of goth is. Its just the saddest thing.

lol I don't think I can be considered a an Emo-Goth, despite having close relations with the subculture. I love emos, I do, but I'm not one. (Love the music though).
My friend asked me today if I have any clothes I wear that are colours besides red and black. I mentioned that I had dark blue and then found myself stumped as I realized that I only wear black, red and dark blue.
I really like the series and your art Very informative and creative.

Funny how people claim to be open-minded and non-judgemental but everyone hates emo kids... I hate the music and don't particularly like the style, but I have always had emo friends growing up, seriously, there is nothing wrong with them. It's just not MY thing. Just because you don't like something, doesn't mean it's awful and that people who do like it deserve your hatred.
It's stupid to "hate" a whole subculture... That's A LOT of people you don't know that you've judged based on appearance only.
