Description Of course, the majority of Goths are unique in their style and music preferences. However, within the subculture there are certain "types" of Goth with particular characteristics. And it can be fun to classify them. Naturally, classifications for each "type" vary from person to person, so you may disagree with what I say here!

I had a lot of reservations about doing this type - I know that Goths seem to hate being associated with Emos, and vica versa. But because I've had so many comments mentioning Emos, I thought that it really had to be done.

Sorry that this has been a long time in coming, and that it's drawn even sloppier than usual... I've been revising for and doing my university final exams for the past month, and I've only just had a break...

Well I liked your goth (stereo) type pics Im not goth but a lot of these things you wrote kind of fit me lol. well like medieval goths i love old places and especially churches because they have a special feeling to them and the only jewlry I wear is a 100 + year old cross though im not that religious. And since I was little i have been disappointed in the fact that I was not born in the Victorian time because of my love for old and fancy dresses and love classical music ( ex piano student of 6 years ) but that really doesn’t go well with my inner β€œmetalhead” but I found harmony in the band apocalyptica witch is classical/Metal, Metal played with 3 cellos. Then I dress moestly in black but like I sayd im not goth but it was really fun to see that I had something in common with some of these types

Love your art work

I like The Rasmus and MCR, I was goth when I was 15, but no more, and I like Emo style, but I am not sad everyday, and like Visual kei, but I don't want to be a radical japanese freak...
I think I am rare

Good job.

Gasp! Is this even possible? I think "emo goth" has got to be a contradiction. For one thing, emos actually care when they bitch and whine ^_-.

I love this series. And you've made me giggle yet again.

Lol, though I would half-expect a passing mention of razor blades as a fashion statement. This little movement has swamped my town. God.

Trellia In reply to GlacialHeart [2007-05-20 20:22:03 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much!

As for the razor blades, I think that the issue of self-harm should not be approached lightly in art, particularly in something so whimsical as this series. It is a serious issue, and however prevalent it may be in the goth or emo scene, I do not want to somehow encourage people to start doing it by suggesting that a goth or emo "should" do it in order to be goth or emo.

Which is why it won't be mentioned in this series

FaerytaleMalice In reply to ??? [2007-05-20 00:03:25 +0000 UTC]

I wasn't expecting this.. that's not a good, nor bad thing.
I can't hate emo. 90% of my friends are almost exactly as you've described, and how most everyone describes them.
Kudos to not mentioning the girl pants [on guys].

Unfortunately, there's not enough goth influence here for us to at least have gothy emos. We just get the normal kind.. because I live a few blocks from a hardcore/screamo/emo/sometimes punk music venue. I swear it's a breeding ground for them.

Trellia In reply to FaerytaleMalice [2007-05-20 12:01:20 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, I could have mentioned the girl pants, but it didn't seem to be specifically relevant to the gothy type emos (plus tight pants are harder to draw).

Too cute! I love this series... and it's nice to see that you've illustrated Emo as a sub Goth group... I associate with most "types" you have described and I'm glad to see you add this one... my best friend calls Emos "Goth Lite" or "Baby Goths" because most of them are sooooo much younger than us... great job as per usual, keep up the good work

Trellia In reply to ys-eye [2007-05-19 23:14:03 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! Although as I've already found, associating Emos with Goths has been, inevitably, controversial (read some of the comments and you'll see what I mean!).

Thanks for being continually supportive!

You're most welcome, and I did read the comments... the Emos that I know personally wouldn't mind... although they do refer to the rest of us as "old school" ahh the wonder and innocence of youth... what would I give to feel like I know all the answers again

Trellia In reply to ys-eye [2007-05-20 12:00:26 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, "old school..." Ironic, seeing as that seems to be a keyword in Emo culture.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Trellia In reply to Kittensoft [2007-05-19 16:51:38 +0000 UTC]

Because they're new on the scene, I suspect, and appropriate a lot of imagery that "belong" do other subcultures, thus diminishing the identity of that culture.

Kittensoft In reply to Trellia [2007-05-23 03:18:13 +0000 UTC]

Maybe...Personally I dont mind it, not a huge fan of most of the music though...Heheh I wonder where Emo will be in 10 years, if it will stick around or what?

Trellia In reply to Kittensoft [2007-05-23 16:28:20 +0000 UTC]

I imagine it won't be around very long, I don't think its distincitive enough - it bases itself on too many other subcultures. But I could be wrong.

I was missing this. Thanks for doing it again (and we hope you do a million more).

And I so love Tim Burton (and his movies, of course)... I hate the way Jack Skellington turned into a selling device (one day I'll really start hating Disney).

Trellia In reply to wickedwretch [2007-05-19 08:50:12 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

Do you think, though, that Tim Burton is also to blame for the commerciality of his films? He's a businessman after all, and he wants to make money from them. Like all of us.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

wickedwretch In reply to Trellia [2007-05-20 04:30:35 +0000 UTC]

It's not bad that Tim Burton becomes popular and commercial (as long as he keeps doing great stuff), in fact, that could end up being good. What I don't kinda like is that some things just lose some 'deepness', and I don't like hordes of fanboys that can't see beyond their noses.

I hate emo kids. They generally like things that I've been interested in since I was a kid, and like many goth folks, I dislike anyone who is a new fan of something I like. >.>

But you don't hate emos. And that's very cool of you. Bravo, and quite accurate.

Trellia In reply to fishtank-bomber [2007-05-19 08:48:41 +0000 UTC]

I just don't like the idea of hating anyone based on subcultural affiliation. I'd rather hate someone for their personality.

+nods+ A good lesson to live by. And I suppose it's not that I hate emos in general (I have a few friends considered emo), it's just...most of the ones I've met aren't so nice. I'm just going by experience.

bggyjns84 In reply to Trellia [2007-05-19 16:28:02 +0000 UTC]

Well, in my observations I've noticed that Emos, while they dress similar to goths and punks, really don't belong to either classification. They actually share more similarities to the same social groups that followed boy bands and late 90's pop groups before they bellied up. The original Emo music movement was squelched with the rise of bands like Good Charlotte, which transformed the genre from a subshoot of punk music into a new brand of pop music, where stanza, formula and strategically designed campaigns have replaced creativity and expression. Bands like My Chemical Romance have even been labelled as Emo simply because of their dress and youthful image, however they actually belong to the Hardcore category with bands like Hawthorne Heights. The closest thing to punk in the Emo format is a subgenre called Screamo, which is similar to Hardcore in a lot of respects, but I feel that eventually this offshoot will split off and become its own seperate movement.

MY chemical romance is considered emo because of their LYRICS!

my chemical romance is considered emo because emos and emo-posers alike found them easy to rip off. they also get lumped together with other bands, and its not because of the music. its because of the fashion. which is pathetic. kindve like you.

well, if guns n roses said they werent rock, it wouldnt mean its true
lyrics define a band, and gerard probably has only the most negative of emo stereotypes, as emotional hardcore is deifferent from the 2006-onwards mod emo, which is fall out boy, mcr etc.

if it wasnt for emo, mcr wouldnt have many fans

That would mean that Nirvana must have been emo too. And Pearl Jam. And The Beatles. And any other band that may have had a sad or emotional theme.

Thanks for being ignorant.

emohermione In reply to bggyjns84 [2008-02-08 21:07:31 +0000 UTC]

theye wrent in the emo time so theres no way of knowing. and im not talking abpout a little emotion, im talking about lyrics like, "wouldn't it be great to take a pistol by the hand and wouldnt it be great if we were dead?", and "when talking's just a waste of breath, and living is a waste of death" <<< thats emo

and calling me ignorant is pretty stupid as you seem to have no grasp on mod emo music
