MiND MATTERS: [link]

Welcome to the show: [link]

Wild Wild Chess: [link]

Behind Enemy Lines: [link]

PWND!!!!

(dammit, no "!" allowed in the Deviation-Title)

Haha, nudder last-minute-contest-entry xD

Okay, so... YES. This builds up on the "chess = black VS white = Good VS Evil" Idea, but with a spin of humor to it and a little wordplay: The PAWN PWNS the Rook xD

So, yeah. Probably not the "technically best possible"-render, but i think it turned out okay, especially since this is a "last minute" thing, haha!

Hope yΒ΄all like it

Again, thanks for all the feedback, , you can delete the 65697415151 WiP-Files now xD

For the Techies:

Maya, Mental Ray, post in Photoshop assembling the render passes and adding a vignette and DoF, you know the deal xD

Actually, its the Queen, the mosz powerful figure in the game

But yeah, youre right, its a lil hard to tell in this image... This was already pointed out in another comment. Maybe its so tough to see, because you dont get a direct comparison between the king and the queen.

Maybe its a lil easier to see here? [link]

But i am very glad you like it

Thanks for your kind and for the nice comment

haha that picture helped xD I guess the King would naturally have the cross on his head, although it changes from sets sometimes >.<

but I at first thought it was the queen, since she's the most powerful and the rook would naturally want to hide behind the greatest person, but then, I thought that it might be the King instead, since out of chess, he'd be most powerful so... XD; it confused me haha

but still, amazing work xD Going to show it to my friends when I see tham haha

I always wanted to learn how to use Maya! >_< but I never get the chance=/

Well, yeah, i get you... Maybe its really not too clearly visible, that the figure the rook is hiding behind is the queen

I am glad you like it so much, that really makes me smile a lot

And yeah, while not without flaws, Maya is indeed a very cool application!

Hm why dont you ever get the chance to learn Maya, if i may ask? Time?

I've seen a lot of work people did using Maya and they all looked pretty amazing. But I suppose every program, games etc will have its own flaws xd;

but time is definitely one reason why I never got the chance to learn Maya. But I know I'm willing to give time to learn it. The other problem is my parents <__<; they dont exactly want me learning these things lol not much 'use' for my future @_@ thats what they say, but they'd probably still get it for me if I asked enough, if only it was cheaper. It's much too pricey for them to get it for me=/

psh. I just looked at your gallery xD. and decided I had to watch you haha XXD

TRiGGER80 In reply to animemangakuryujiru [2009-07-04 21:44:03 +0000 UTC]

Yes, definitely.

Software is and can only be a tool, and thats good that way.
And as such, each software has its own advantages and drawbacks.

Its not so much about WHICH software you use. its about the HOW.

Thing is:
A lot of people dont GET, that all this is just a matter of PERSONAL preference.
Use the software you like the best and get aling with the best.

In my case, its Maya. But it doesnt need to be the right software for you.
(btw: been using several programs over time)

An dont let yourself be blinded by statements like:
"ZOMG!!! MAYA IS TEH BESTZ U HAV TO USE THAT EVERYTHING ELSE IS NOT GUD!!! THEY USEDED IT TO MEHK LORD OF TEH RINGZ!!!" or such.

I mean, true: they DID use Maya to create VFX and Animations for many, MANY Hollywoodmovies, Games, commercials etc etc.
But they also used a TON of different Software for very specific purposes along with maya, and most companies even write their own tools.

(Digital Domain for example, which is a really BIG company that worked on a LOT of Hollywood Movies, use Maya as well as SideFX Houdini plus their own, selfbuilt Compositing program "Nuke" (which, btw, they released to public and is now sold by a company called "the Foundry") as well as, well, their own custom-written Liquid Simulation Software called "Storm". Plus probably a BUNCH of other programs, haha.)

Thing is: When you ask these "ZOMG!!! LOTR IS MADE BY MAYA"-persons, WHY you "have" to use maya or why it is "TEH BEZTEZT", they will say: "Because they used it for the movie XYZ" or "Because it just is the best!!!". Well, and if you dig a little deeper and ask: "Well, WHY did they use it for Star Wars...?" you rarely get a "real" answer aside from "its the best"...

Well, a big deal why "the big guys" like using Maya (which is by no means perfect, it really DOES have flaws... )is, that it is just a very open platform. Compared to a lot of other products, Maya is very robust and has a relatively easy to learn scripting language, which allows them to easily create their own tools and plug ins for it, and since a big deal of maya is written in just that scripting language, its relatively easy to customize.

Sure, that might not be the only reason, but its definitely ONE reason.

So, rambling aside:
The point i am trying to make here is:

Software is just a tool.
Dont get too "fixed" or "focused" on Maya.
There is LOTS of great Software out there, that you can use to bring your visions to life, or to find your entry into the "3D Realm".
And not all of em are as expensive as Maya.
Some great Software even is FREE!

Blender for example, is a great, powerful 3D Software, and very lightweight, too!
I myself dont get along with it very well, because i cant get my head around the interface. But there are enough people out there that use it, and they do AWESOME things with it. I have seen Free movies created with it (Look for "Elephants Dream" and "Big Buck Bunny"), that can really match PixarΒ΄s quality. And: Blender is free!

Then thereΒ΄s "Open FX" , which is free, too, but i really cant tell too much about it.

Another Option is "TrueSpace". It used to be a "multi hundred dollar" 3D Program, but the company that makes it was bought by microsoft, and surprisingly enough, TrueSpace is now available for free. Didnt use it myself, but again: i saw wonderful things being created with it, and i had a look at the features-list, and its internal Rendering Engine offers some pretty decent Features.

Oh, and theres Daz-Studio.
Well, i am a little "split" when it comes to daz-studio, because you cant really model things yourself or anything like that. Its more among the lines of posing and modifying readymade figures with props and clothing, lighting them and rendering them, so it sure is a little limited. But its a nice toy, and i have it currently installed, might even be, i more or less integrate it into my MayaWorkflow one day... Well, a lot of people really get creative with DAZ-Studio and do wonderful things, and thats really cool, but there are also a few people, that just download content for it, assemble it, hit render => "yay, i ish a 3d artist" xD But nonetheless, its a very interesting program, and its worth having a look at it. The basic version is free, and there is also a lot of free content (figures, props, clothing, poses...) for it readily available on the internet, as well as commercial content. I think, this program is also an interesting way to sort of "have a peek" at 3D, for people that never had any idea about 3D before and get familiar with working in 3D Software.

Aside from free programs, there are also some affordable 3D programs out there that have great functionality but wont cost you a fortune and send you off to go live under the bridge, haha!

Granted, the "big" names among Commercial 3D Applications are quickly counted:
Maya, 3D Studio MAX, Softimage XSI, SideFX Houdini, LightWave and Cinema4D.

I think, SideFX offers an affordable Version of Houdini for less than 100 Bucks nowadays, which is of course slightly restriced, compared to the "full" multi-thousand dollar product, but ive heard good things about it. But it needs to be said, that Houdini isnt everyones taste, interface-wise.

Cinema 4D is an awesome application, too, with an interface that many people just dig and find easy to use. A lot of times ive heard, it was the most easy to use 3D software available. And its also quite powerful. It is offered in several priceranges, but i am not up-to-date with that, so you would have to check up on that yourself, but its definitely more among the lines of "affordable" than Maya and Co.

Oh, and if you really want to have a look at Maya:
AutoDesk has a FREE "Personal Learning Edition" of Maya to download. Sure, it doesnt render in the highest resolutions, and i think it doesnt have the mentalRay renderer integrated and it renders with watermarks, but if you really want to have a look at it right away, you can download the PLE for free. Its also great if you want to learn the Software.

So, if you really want to have a look at 3D and give it a go, there are LOTS of options for you. As well as lots of software. I mentioned a lot of programs, but surely not all.. there are so much more (Shade for example, which is popular in Japan as ive heard, "Poser" which is similar to DAZ-Studio, "Silo", which is for modeling only, but the models can easily be exported to other programs, and the navigation and shortcuts are VERY Maya-ish, and its less than 100 Dollars. Then theres Messiah-Studio, available ins several Versions and there are TONS more programs!) but I would suggest, you gather some more information about the programs that interest you, maybe talk to a few people that use them, and download the demoversions that are available for most of these programs to see, which one you like the best.

Hope, i could help you a little bit, and really:

You dont NEED to use Maya, if you cant afford it, just because everyone else (including me) does or because it has been used for Final Fantasy...

Software is just a tool, and as with all tools, a part of the deal is, to find the tools that work for *you*. And once you are at that stage, you will learn more and progress with knowledge and skill, and if you then find you need "more" or you want to give Maya a shot, you can still go for it, and your entry will be much easier, because you already know a lot of the terms and concepts behind 3D, helping you to find an "easier access" to Maya or whatever it might be that you would like to use at that point.

Oh, and did i mention...? A nice side-effect of that is, that you will produce some wonderful artwork while you are exploring the programs and tools available to you

And thank you for giving my gallery a look, and thank you SO much for the Watch Means a lot to me

And what you say reminds me of the 80s...

there was a game for the Amiga-Platform, called "Battle Chess", which was a lot of fun!
the figures were all animated, and when you beat a figure, you saw an animation, showing (for example), how the knight splits the queen with his sword, or the Rook eating the queen XD
