Haha, nudder last-minute-contest-entry xD
Okay, so... YES. This builds up on the "chess = black VS white = Good VS Evil" Idea, but with a spin of humor to it and a little wordplay: The PAWN PWNS the Rook xD
So, yeah. Probably not the "technically best possible"-render, but i think it turned out okay, especially since this is a "last minute" thing, haha!

Its a very, VERY popular HomeComputer from the 80s

Well, yeah! its a great Platform! i lvoed it (and still have one somewhere 
But it was not just a computer for gaming:
It was very popular among Graphics Artists, and even for VideoPostproduction!
It has been used for a few movies and TV Shows, even!
For example, the Computeranimations for the first two Seasons of "Babylon 5" had been created with it.
The reason for that popularity in the Graphics / Video - field is, that it has outdone PCs in that field BY FAR at that time and it simply was able to process VideoSignals much much better! (you didnt even have to use a dedicated Monitor for it, if you had the right cable and your TV had a SCART-Port, you could just plug it into your TV instead!)
Well.. i guess, a lot of people would wish for a reissue of it, but lets face it:
The market is SO MUCHLY dominated by IBM-PC compatible Intel / AMD Machines, it wont stand a chance against that... even the MAC has it tough =/
But yeah, the Amiga-Series was very cool for gaming, too
There were quite a few games for it, which still make people that played em back then drool when they hear their names nowadays
I think, there should be a really good AMIGA-Emulator out there on the Internet...

Well, i remember, in the late 80s / early 90s, there was a chessgame on the "Amiga" computerplatform... called "Battle Chess", and it was quite funny, because they figures really would act somewhat like this, haha!
They were all more like characters, and when you beat a figure, you would actually SEE them do something, different animation for every pairing of figures... the queen would stab the king in the back, the Knight would split the queen with his sword, etc...

Well, i guess, you would have to timetravel back to the late 80s / early 90s for that...

Well, i guess, that will be tough.
Like i said, the original game (or at least as original as it gets) was released in the late 80s / early 90s, for the Amiga Platform. I am not even sure if there is a native PC Version. And if so, chances are, it wont run on modern computers. If it starts at all, it most likely will run way too fast.
So... i would suggest to find a good working Amiga Emulator and the according roms / diskimages
Aside from that:
I think, there were several "clones" of said around for PC, even recent ones, i guess.
Maybe try your luck with that

And yeah, i agree: using different techniques, or maybe even a different media, this might have turned out even better.
Also, if i hadnt done this "last minute" and invested some more time into the shaders, it would have profited from that, too. xD
At first i was thinking to add contrast in Photoshop or do a texture overlay or something, But then decided against it and just comped my renderpasses together, added some DepthOfField and a slight vignette
