Description
Next page -- Previous page -- First page

After a lengthy summer break, the comic is back on track! It took me weeks to figure out the right camera angles and actions on each panel, not to mention the dialogs... but at least we finally have a digestible page as a result. :3 The backgrounds may not be perfect, the pony proportions are messed up some places, but it's close enough.

The system Octavia is explaining is based a loot distribution system that we applied in my old guild (not invented by us, we just used it).

Next on Heartstrings:
Finally, I'm back!
I'll have to play the lyre yet though...
WHA- SERIOUSLY?!

How come Lyra can play guitar so well?
Her father taught her. Her magic hands here are pretty much the magical manifestations of her muscle memory, or something like that (kind of like a phantom limb).

She only has 3 fingers for the frets
There's a thumb over there too, albeit in cover so we can't see it from this angle. Otherwise, she did mention it earlier that she finds the amount of her fingers strange (she's got 4 digits, like in most cartoons; while she's used to having 5).

And if you couldn't have told already, I don't play any instruments so I can only hope I don't make too many mistakes in my presumptions. xD

Um, you didn't quite catch my meaning.
I wasn't saying is was an epic mistake or something, just a curiosity.
I know she has 4 fingers total, as per her own observation. You just cannot hold a string down with your thumb, it stays behind the fretboard.

What I meant to say was that, as I gathered from my attempts to start learning guitar, pressing correct strings down at correct frets without looking and at a reasonable tempo is... I'd call it impossible, but others do it, therefore it just requires tons of practice.
And pinky finger is most definitely used for fretting, so losing it for whatever reason, like becoming a cartoonish pony, would require a few more tons of practice to get properly used to.

Add arguably unfamiliar hands and a few years without practice into the mix... And you can just play Canon Rock right off the bat with only a few mistakes. Because that's what your cutie mark is telling you, apparently xD

P.S. I've noticed it just now... Lyra is left-handed!
She uses right hand for fretting and left for strumming, unlike most players. And I checked the later comics, she actually holds pencil in the left hand!

Sounds reasonable, I didn't even think of that when I made the page.
Well, Lyra has a talent for string instruments, so I'll take my artistic freedom to claim that she's just that good. xD

Lyra is left-handed!
Nice catch! It eludes most people.

Also, Thomas Bergersen's Flight of the Silver Bird makes this comic the most epic thing ever (Seriously, listen to Two Steps from Hell. It could make the Room seem like an epic story of trust and betrayal)

So as guild members, they get bits for taking on assignments. Β I wonder do they file their taxes as 1040 or 1099?

wildhawk441 In reply to Strein86 [2017-07-25 13:06:07 +0000 UTC]

So far as the show has shown us; there doesn't seem to be annual taxes. That might not stop fan universe writers, though.

I also remember (from my personal experience) that 1099s are usually support forms that you report in a 1040.

I now realize just how mad Octavia was to Pinkie when she kept on interrupting her in The Grand Galloping Gala, because she worked so hard for it.
They should have Pinkie as a member. we've seen her play a whole performance by herself, when leading the parasprites.

marinus18 [2014-05-10 18:16:00 +0000 UTC]

that point system is actually quite unfair.
Musicians who don't have much time just never, ever get to perform. I would think it would be more fare if you only needed enough points.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TriteBristle In reply to marinus18 [2014-05-10 18:31:17 +0000 UTC]

If they don't have much time, then they wouldn't have time to perform either anyway. >:3

Also I forgot to mention the point decay in this page, which periodically substract a certain percentage (e.g. 10% monthly or something like that) of everypone's points, in order to prevent longer inactivity.

This is actually a rather widely used looting system used in raids by many guilds in MMORPGs. The system has been proven to be quite just.

it would be more fare if you only needed enough points.
If you have an event for X musicians, but >X members want to go and all have enough points, then your proposal isn't enough.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

marinus18 In reply to TriteBristle [2014-05-10 18:36:54 +0000 UTC]

not necessarily. It can also be that someone else has just more than you do.

that makes it even more involved. Though it sounds like something that could work.

MMORPG? what's that?

then it's just who's first and who wants to do it the most. There will still be only 1 (or maybe multiple) chosen

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TriteBristle In reply to marinus18 [2014-05-10 18:43:54 +0000 UTC]

It can also be that someone else has just more than you do.
Which means they spend a good chunk of it on this event, giving me way more chance to go on the next one.

MMORPG? what's that?
Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game. Like World of Warcraft.

then it's just who's first and who wants to do it the most. There will still be only 1 (or maybe multiple) chosen
Instead they can just go by the point system, take the pony who wants to go and has the highest points, then the next highest, etc. The bigger the gig is, the more it costs, the more time it will take for them to go to the next one (but also pays more as well).

No hard feelings, nopony's angry or sad because luck didn't favor them in the draw that they'd have to make to choose X ponies randomly out of >X ponies.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

marinus18 In reply to TriteBristle [2014-05-10 18:54:22 +0000 UTC]

yes but they have more time so they'll always be on top.

ah, now I see where you have it from.
I was comparing it to a real world music organization. The one that I'm part of doesn't function like that at all.

Β I just feel that the members that have a lot of time to spend on it will dominate the others a lot.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TriteBristle In reply to marinus18 [2014-05-10 19:01:04 +0000 UTC]

If someone doesn't have time, that means they are working at somewhere else already, so they don't need money from gigs anyway. But keep in mind that we are talking about gigs like the grand galloping gala (season 1 finale), events where less active members wouldn't want to play anyway (and if they would, they would find a way to get time to participate more).

Well, that remains to be seen. What about the prices ? The schedule ?
If foalsitters - babysitters - were that much of an easy solution, it would be much more practical, in our world.

But since we're talking here about sentient, intelligent, speaking, colourful equines, I guess the logic of our world doesn't always applies that much. :-3
