Description
After the end of the Great War, all boat-train traffic moved from Charing Cross to Victoria Station, now this wasn't a huge issue for the railway but due to the track work being that of the London Chatham & Dover Railway this had a weight restriction meaning that the L Class which was the standard power on these services was bared from the line, Richard Maunsell chose to re-built 11 of the E Class with new boilers and fireboxes, with a boiler pitched higher they had a larger grate. The engine re-builds were undertaken by Beyer Peacock, with 11 done whilst a plan to convert 10 further engines were changed in favor of 10 D Class, done at Ashford. These became the E1 and D1 classes.
They worked the Victoria trains until the arrival of the N15's.
The First withdrawal of either class was D1 No1747 in 1944, with the last being in 1961 when all were gone.
Edit: Visable opposite side braking equipment.
